Only viewing this as we come up to the 3rd year since Kaelan's passing, since I am not as versed in what's accessible to everyone on the web. Many thanks to all who have shown support for our families over the past few years, with both Kaelan and Sandy having journeyed beyond the earth plane. My son Aaron just told me today about your family losing David's son Kaelan. It has been many years since I have seen all of you. My remembrances of the Paton's are of a close-knit and loving family. From what I have read about Kaelan, it seems that he made a positive impression on all that knew him, he was brave, loyal and loving as well. Such a tremendous loss for you and all who knew him. How fortunate for the world to have had him in it. I wish your entire family peace.

I am so sorry for you and all who grieve. I've been out of the loop for a while and it wasn't utill Susan brought this to my attention that I learned of the trajedy. My heart goes out to you. That Kaelan was attempting to save another's life tells me volumes about him and the family he represents: true-hearted and brave. God's peace, love, blessings and assurances to you all. The incredible gathering in the packed auditorium said it all. So many, young and old, all there for Kaelan and his family. The service was very moving, Caroline sang as beautifully as she has ever sung, David was magnificent, and Sandy hung in there, God bless him. A letter from Frankies grandmother was read, she must be a remarkable woman. Sisters, Aunts and Uncles were there and so many old friends, Ed Trickett came in from Chicago, it was great to see him, he sang "Gently down the stream of time".
I told my neighbor about Kaelan, he told me of something from the Talmud, not quite sure what the Talmud is, but it says, "He who saves one life, saves the world".
Hope the service helped and brought some peace to the family and friends of Kaelan.

Today my wife Ruth and I are swinging into what passes for a normal day around here. But, it's not just another day. Yesterday we drov e up to Sharon for Kealan's memorial service. Over the years, I've become somewhat of an unintended funeral attender. I sing with the Men's Chorus in my church and as often as possible, I go to funerals at our church and sing with the choir. When my gospel quartet was still active, we often sang a home-going ceremonies, Christian and even Jewish. My two son-in-laws are Muslim and we've attended their funeral services as well. All that said, I thought the memorial service for Kaelan was the most beautiful I've ever attended. Even though the service was held in a school auditorium and many of the people in attendance aren't church-goers, we had church yesterday. At least my definition of church. There was great crying at times and great joy, as well. When a wonderful black woman sang I'll Fly Away and people locked arms and swayed to the music as they sang along, it felt like they could leviate the building. The testimonies were extremely moving, and filled with warm humor. Caroline sang a musical setting for the familiar reading that St. Paul wrote in 1st Corinthinas, her voice quavering with emotion, but strong, and the whole service was moving blend of testimony, poetry and song. Letters were read from Sandy to his grandson, and David to his son, as well as from several other family members.

After the service, we gathered in the cafeteria for a vegetarian buffet with a dangerous, long, long table of deserts. It was a time for me to see many friends I've not seen for years including Ed Trickett, Sally Rogers, Dalas Cline, Bill and Andy Spence, George Ward, Patricia Campbell, Karen Kobela, Priscilla Herdman and countless others.

We must be getting old. We get together at funerals.

Sunday was a beautiful bookend to a very spiritual weekend.

Dear Patons. Janet and I were out of the country and I only learned of your loss a few days ago. I am heart-scalded, as I know of no family who more loves rivers. I recall a conversation with Sandy--I think it was at a Folk Next Door Concert--about our mutual love for songs about rivers and for the peace one gains from watching them run. David's love of paddling and your clan's respect for the beautiful waterways of this land make this tragedy all the more searing. As the father of a firefighter/legislator/whitewater guide, my respect for what Kaelan did to save others knows no bounds. There is no greater love nor courage than to imperil your own life to save and serve others. I regret that I cannot attend the memorial, but my grateful heart will be there. May songs and friends give you strength.

Hospice Center in Ithaca. My way of being there in spirit will be to sing Blessed Quietness

Kaelan has been in our thoughts along with all his family and friends. We visited Postman's Park in London (nomi solo mentioned it earlier) a couple of days ago and read the tiles there. Yes, Susan. A memorial, open to all, is planned for Sunday, July 12th at Housatonic Valley Regional High School

Kaelan's dad, David, hopes that this may become an annual event, in Kaelan's memory. Duane & I visited Sandy & Caroline today & helped get some cds ready for the Old Songs Festival. We saw David today for the first time since Kaelan's death. Naturally, he & his folks are still actively grieving. It was good to be with them.
