R. Dann was an ACE... he left Montreal in the late 70's along with the likes of Danny Greenspoon, Rick Whitelaw and Randy Kemp to work with both Tysons in different bands.... they never looked back... last time I saw Dann was at Ranchman's in Calgary with Danny and Randy backing up Sylvia... nice band... but I digress, back to BM.

however we all knocked around the same Montreal scene... it was beaucoo fun...

Yes, Ron Dann did a lot of studio work, but I also recall seeing him play live with all kinds of people in the 70's. Among those I remember him with were Ian Tyson, Jesse Winchester, and Alexander Zelkine (Russian folksinger living in Montreal who sang in many languages.)

The person playing pedal steel on "If I Had Wings" is an old school mate of mine by the name of Ron Dann. Ron started out playing in a high school band with some other students and went on to a career doing mostly studio work backing up many well known musicians. He also appeared in a movie "Hank Williams - The Show He Never Gave" Sadly, Ron passed at an early age from cancer.

Bruce does have a way with words, but then he was schooled in that time when songwriters wrote deeply meaningful lyrics.

When I had Bruce out to Sooke and Victoria a couple of months back, we went into a friends studio and demo-ed a half dozen new tunes. I'm here to tell you that the best is yet to come.

I have become friends with Bruce, yourself and others over the years although I have never met most of you. I started on the Mudcat searching for song lyrics and found myself involved with much more. A short story.
When I first came to mudcat I knew no one. Then after a few months I felt just a little more comfortable. Then after about a year someone asked about a certain musician and was asking about his/her personal mental health. I got a little angry and more or less said that this should not be discussed as it was no one's business. I got a response back by some person who's handle was "Peace". And he more or less said "Right on Beer". He said other things as well but it got me wondering who the heck this Peace was. Well we did start to communicate and one thing lead to another and sure enough he started writing again and came to play at the Branches and Roots Festival 3 years ago. I remember it well and couldn't believe that he was back on stage. And yes Bruce, I will take a little credit for it and your friends are also happy that you decided to come back. I am anxiously awaiting your return and your company for a bit. How long is up to you because my door is wide open.

Sometimes a line from a song just really hits you where you live.
If I'd have had the good fortune to come across this song 30 years ago I'd have worn the grooves out of the vinyl. Like I did to "Working Class Hero"."Jericho" hits me like that, like somehow the writer is singing my thoughts only in a brilliantly poetic way.

And what about when I said you should honor your roots by putting some Scotch-Irish traditional "toora loo rye aye" [or what ever it is that the Scotch-Irish say] in "Last Robin Of Springtime"?

Hi, y'all. Got back from the calls about two hours ago. We had the one and then another came in while we were 'en route', so we bypassed the first (waved off by ambulance crew) and went to the second about 20 km further along the road. When we almost got back to the hall a third came in. All MVCs. We often receive scant information, and fire is often called out because people are not sure whether extrication will be required. On occasion, people are trapped by the steering wheel, crumpled car body, etc., and they need the tools we carry to get them out. (Spreaders, cutters, airbags, etc.) After my life as a firefighter ends, I intend to get into some serious forced entry at places like Fort Knox, etc.)

I like what Jeri said about people taking their own 'meaning' from songs. One of my favourite songs is "Maggie". Man, that is both beautiful and powerful. (I wandered today to the hill, Maggie, to watch the scene below . . . .) Thing is, I could never sing it without getting tears in my eyes, so I seldom do the song. But I love it. I have never discussed the song with anyone, and I doubt I ever will. It has some personal meanings to me, and talkin' about them would make the song 'just another song' to me. I don't really ever want not to be able to cry when I sing it.

I (as I'm sure with most writers) have had people ask me what a song means or what a stanza means. I have never been willing to answer. I have once or twice--mostly in my youth, sacrificed meaning for rhyme, but not for about thirty years now. And for sure, not with "Fool".

One of my best critics has been and continues to be Azizi. I have bounced many songs off her and she's done me the honour of talking straight with me. (She got my nose out of joint a few times, but I think most writers are aware that whatever they commit to paper is the best thing since Shakespeare, and it takes some doing to listen to one's newborn 'greatest thing since sliced bread' creation worthy of at least three of the great masters receive less than RAVE reviews. As Azizi once said to me, "If you don't want it straight, don't ask." She remains one of my best friends and certainly one of the 'critics' I can always count on. I take her advice most of the time.

Thanks to Adrien, I was able to start getting back to music. Of course, many of you know the role Ron Bankley played in that. Both Tami and Ebbie have never been less than encouraging to me, and the truth is I have more people to thank for still writing than I could write on a Mudcat post.

Few song creations are the work of just one person, and most of mine aren't. People influence the song's direction or tone. I think we are all 'informed' by our experiences and those who have touched or hearts in some way. Such is the case with me, anyway. I think after the next CD--assuming there is a next CD--I would like to do one of the songs that caused me to try writing when I was 13-15 years old. Some trad, some modern 'folk', some rock from 'back in the day'. I owe much to church hymns, and folks like BH, BK, RV, but I owe anyway as much to folk groups like TKT and PPM and CMT.

One of the writers who affected me most--from two or three meetings at Gerde's Folk City--was a fellow named Gil Turner. His, "Carry it On" is to this day, for me, the single best song anyone anywhere ever wrote. It's simple, elegant and strong beyond the words or melody. To hear that mountain of a man sing it was better than water to a dying man.

I should note the following: I'm playing the 'finger-picked' guitar that starts the song and follows through. However, the night before we went into the studio to do that song, Paul Mills (great producer and fantastic musician) said he had an idea and the result was the strings (which were over-dubbed by Chris Crilly). Paul wrote the string arrangement and played 'back-up guitar' also. Chris is so darned good it's unreal. He is a wonderful person and tremendous musician (violin/fiddle and piano being two instruments of which he is a master), and I can't ever say enough about Paul. Paul now does work with Joanne Crabtree, and THEY are awesome.

That song was written about a block away from where I grew up on LeCaron Street in Cote St Paul (a district in Montreal squeezed between Ville Emard, St Henri and Verdun (which at one time was the largest city in the world not to have its own public transport, its own electric system, its own police department. They 'rented' that from Montreal)).

I had a dog named Tamar at the time and I had just gotten over a visit and stay in hospital where they determined that I had what they then-called migratory arthritis cause by a bout of rheumatic fever from a year before when I was in my early 20s. My knees and ankles had swelled so badly that the only way I could get to the bathroom was via dog. Tamar used to give me her collar and drag me along the wooden floor so I could get from the bed to the toilet. Couldn't have done it otherwise. A friend found me and got me to the Royal Vic. Friends took care of Tamar.

I don't recall much about writing the song, but I did get it in my head to use an "ee" rhyme for each of the last four lines in each stanza. If I recall correctly, it took me about ten days to two weeks to write.

The arthritis just went away after a month or so and has never returned. Those people who suffer from swollen body joints have my empathy. I cannot recall such pain ever in my life (except maybe the death of my grandfather).

I am honoured that Ron and JT have done this song. I don't know that it's the best thing I ever wrote, but it's in the top five or so. And I'm honoured that Dan has posted it here.

The Dylanish sound of my voice is just the way my voice is, but his phrasing has always been a very important influence on my own writing. I always have and still do consider him to be the all-time greatest songwriter this world has ever seen. He's the reason I ever started writing songs at all.

Anyway, probably too much info.

As for Jeri: she and I had the opportunity to co-write a song last summer, and the fates willing, we'll fix it up in a month or so. She is a damned good songwriter, but like so many, she's under-rated.

I love the song, and it's one of my favorite 'back in the day' songs. My favorite Bruce song is one he hasn't recorded yet, but he did the end part of it at Apple Hollow last year. I think the ones I heard from then will blow it all up, but I believe he's been writing since then too.

I try to write songs and one thing I'm learning (which I talked about with a friend a short time ago) is that no matter what it's supposed to mean and what it means to the composer, everybody is going to look to their own lives to give a song meaning. Concrete feelings/abstract reasons.

I could pick it apart like some do with Dylan or Cohen, but I think folks are better off finding their own meaning. I think the song, fundamentally, is about being someone other people don't understand.

Or not--who knows...

Lovely performance and great song. Thanks for sharing it with us. The voice had a Dylan-esque quality to it which I found very appealing.

I used to hear Bruce sing this at the Golem in Montreal in the 70's. Although I'm not even sure what some of it means, the song has haunted me for about 35 years.
