Subject: Lyr Add: VALLEY OF PEACE (Mrs. Frank A. Breck) From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Jun 09 - 03:00 AM Lyrics from The Phono-Bretto: (Phonograph Libretto) (New York: Phono-Bretto Company, ©1919); attribution from WorldCat.org; recording info from 78discography.com: VALLEY OF PEACE Words by Mrs. Frank A. Breck, arr. I. H. Meredith. Copyright 1909 by Tullar-Meredith Co., New York. 1. There's a beautiful valley of peace, Where the heart of the weary may rest; Where tumult of trials may cease, And those who are burdened be blest. CHORUS: In the valley of peace, the valley of peace, In the beautiful valley of peace, My Saviour is there every burden to bear, In the beautiful valley of peace. 2. In the valley of peace let me roam, With Jesus my Staff and my Rod, Till I come to my heavenly home, Whose builder and maker is God. [Recorded by Anthony & Harrison 2/2/1911 on Victor Record 16853; and by Chautauqua Preachers Quartet, ca 1917-18 on Pathe 20325.] |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Valley of Peace; Breck From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 22 Jun 09 - 01:49 PM Still looking for this hymn by Carrie Elizabeth Ellis Breck (1855-1934. Several of her hymns are posted at Cyberhymnal, where this one is mentioned, but no information on the hymn, "Valley of Peace" seems to be on the internet. Thanks for your help. "The Valley of Peace" you quoted was recorded by Charlie Monroe and a couple of others, but it lacks background information. Not in Traditional Ballad Index; posted in Bluegrass Messengers but no information; not previously posted at Mudcat. In the Roud Index, a "Valley of Peace" is listed in the Flanders Collection (Middlebury College, Vermont) but no details. It is not "We Will March through the Valley of Peace" (Allen, "Slave Songs") but the Breck hymn may have some relation to the Ollie Gilbert song in the Max Hunter Collection ("Father, Don't Grieve After Me") which includes the words "We will walk through the valley in peace." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Valley of Peace; Breck From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 20 Jun 09 - 11:06 PM "This one? I honestly don't know. I am looking for a hymn by Breck, mentioned but not printed in the Cyberhymnal. The song you post doesn't seem like a hymn. Where did it come from? It sparks a faint memory, but I can't pull it in. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Valley of Peace; Breck From: dick greenhaus Date: 20 Jun 09 - 09:51 PM This one? There's an old broken lock on the old cabin door The cracks and the holes in your cabin floor It's a tumbled down shack, how I long to go back And dwell in that shack evermore cho:Peace, peace the valley of peace Where no sorrows are known Like a heaven, yes heaven to me it seems Peace, the valley my home Though an old broken window, the light brightly shines It twinkles and shines through the honeysuckle vines By the old rustic well is my sweet little Nell And for me I know how she pines In the parlor a fire is burning so bright The old rocking chair is empty tonight That tumbled down shack is a palace to me And that's where I'm longing to be |
