We are searching for at least one tradiltional song from each county in England (that is the old counties). Some are easy but some are much more difficult e.g. Rutland. Any suggestions for any counties greatly appreciated. (It's much easier round Ireland's 32 counties).

I would start off by saying that the term County Songs is not a very useful very concept. For example, you might think that the songs of the Copper Family should all be considered to be "Sussex Songs" but if you look through their song book you will find lines like

I wish I was in Dublin town.....

The Bold Princess Royal bound for Newfoundland.....

It's of a brisk and lively lad come out of Gloucestershire....

Away kind sir, to the Claudy Banks.....

As we were riding up Bradbury Hill....

'Twas down in Cupid's garden.....
from "Cuper's Garden" in London

In Oxford Town, in Oxfordshire, there are some mighty hounds....

Well, I could go on, but I think I have made my point.

However, if you still think "County Songs" is worth pursuing then the book you want is English County Songs by Lucy E. Broadwood and J.A. Fuller Maitland..... there is even a song from Rutlandshire in there.

Realise that "county songs" may not be easiest of themes to explore but there are many obvious ones such as Scarborough Fair and Widdecombe Fair; Derby Ram; Nottingham Goosey Fair; John Peel was buried in Cumbria so one may assume, and Sussex men surely must come from Sussex as does There were three men from Kent come from there.
Don't really want to just follow place names but will if have to and it is surely making us explore a wider variety of songs.

Why start a new thread rather than continuing with this current one you started a few days ago, Murphelly? Lyr Req: One song for each old English County

The group "Life & Times" have composed new songs about Bedfordshire. Fred Hamer was a song collector in Beds., but I don't think any of his songs actually made any reference to the county!

"Nottingham Goosey Fair" are we getting the East Midlands and the West Country mixed up here?
"Tavistock Goosey Fair" is a well known Devonshire song and was to be found in many of the top West Country singers repertoires.
I have heard a song about "Nottingham Goose Fair" once (I think from Fiddler's Dram)but it is not one in common currency around the area.
