Love it! Don't believe it. A bluegrass fan with a sense of humour.

There's a strand of Chinese music that has a real southern-American-banjo feel to it - played on that mini-banjo-type-instrument as by that woman in the yellow blouse. There are some great clips on youtube; I'll post a link or two later if I get the time.

I liked the story abut the soul of Bruce Molsky being trapped in the body of a 13-year old girl...

I think all stringed instruments should be immediately banned by the CDC, the FDA, WHO, PETA, HSUS, RSPCA, and all those other initialized agencies. There have been far too many cases recently of mandolin malaise, bass blood poisoning, guitar grippe, harp hernias, piano fortes, lute lues, and other, usually fatal, maladies. (I shan't even go into the banjo-related pandemics or the rampant loss of virginalities.)

Now brass instruments, such as trumpets (God's chosen instrument), or reeds, such as bassoons (God's chosen something), should be not only encouraged but actually subsidized by paying the players huge amounts of tax-free money of their resident country.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...

If it's gotta have something called a "spit valve" to work, there's something fundamentally wrong with it.

'If it's gotta have something called a "spit valve" to work, there's something fundamentally wrong with it.'

You're probably not a big fan of the nose flute either ...

"After an initial euphoria, fiddle abuse can cause confusion (yada yada) unconsciousness and anterograde amnesia."

What's anterograde amnesia? Sounds like forgetting something before you know it.

Is that like reverse deja vu? Or is it thinking you forgot something you never actually knew. I used to wake up thinking I'd lost the keys to my extensive mansion and estates in Scotland. If anybody finds them, please see a doctor at once. And how do you explain playing a tune you never learned?
Ross

Oh dear! I e-mailed the link to my sister, a fiddler for 36 years.

Alas, I fear it may be too late for her....

Fantastic performer! What's a 'shape note'?

Shape notes were a kind of musical notation used in 19th C American hymns where the shape of the notehead told one how far to jump (a third, a fifth, etc) to get to it. I've been told that once you master them, shape notes make it very easy to sing songs in parts.

Many shape-note collections end in 'harmony' for example, Southern Harmony, Missouri Harmony, Columbian Harmony. But the first (?) and best-loved was called The Sacred Harp.

I just played a beautiful melody, 'Prospect,' from that tradition in church yesterday.

You can play a trumpet or other brass instrument without using the spit valve*, Bee-Dubya. In fact, some don't even HAVE spit valves and they work just fine.

*Of course, it burbles a bit and sounds as if you were drowning.
