Song was written by the Scott Brothers bluegrass band. I believe they are native to West Va.
The song was played quite a bit on the local Clarksburg station back in the early 80's and it was a favorite of mine at the time.
Sorry I can't be more help.
"Where do you run to .....black as night
and you hear a rumbling......there's no train in sight
............
The Shinnston tornado"
All of the lyrics I remember.
You might try to google scott brothers

Wow, have not checked back in while. Thank You all for the information and effort. Yes I was googleing the song again and It led me back here. I also saw a reference to a 45 record of the song by The Scott Brothers that sold on eBay for $56. I wonder if there ever will be a another way to purchase a copy of the song somewhere? I would hope their music doesn't fade into history without chance of being heard again...

Greg

Here is a little more info on The Scott Brothers. Rod Scott, Jeff Scott and Greg Scott are the three brothers who wrote that song; they are The Scott Brothers. I am the daughter of Greg, and The Shinnston Tornado is one of my favorite songs they wrote. The Scott Brothers participated in many different music competitions and had two or three cassette tapes made. I also remember seeing a record cover with them on the fornt once.

I know who recorded the song. I remember hearing it being played on a radio station out of Clarksburg. Name of the group is The Scott Brothers. Those lyrics are correct as far as I can recollect.

It's a long shot, but I have sent an e-mail to one Shannon Tinnell, who made a documentary in 2009 about the tornado, called "When the Wind Stole the River," in the event she might have run across the song in her research, or might at least be able to provide additional leads.

I am amazed that this thread is the first time I have ever heard of this eastern Tornado outbreak that also impacted a number of other counties in WV.

I wrote to the town and asked if they know about the song. I'll post their reply when/if.

Shinnston Tornado

I believe I heard this song on the the radio when I was a child living in West Virginia. It was a Bluegrass style song and was very well done. I have only met one other person who had heard it. I never could get the song out of my head and every once in a while I would google it with no results until here. Has anyone ever heard of a band the sang this song?

TIA

Hi -
Thank you very much for the lyrics. Can you tell us any stories related to the lyrics? Where did you get the lyrics? Is there a recording available? Do you happen to know the name of the songwriter. I'm guessing the song title is "Shinnston Tornado," so I added that above the lyrics - it that the correct title?

SHINNSTON TORNADO

In the hills of West Virginia, near the end of World war 2,
It was a lazy summer evening, then the darkness grew,
And there ain't been nothing like it and may never be again,
When the Shinnston Tornado came down and took our friends.

They say it was north of Shinnston when it first came to the ground,
And it tore and broke in pieces every obstacle it found
Just like the day of judgement, some were taken, some were spared
We all felt natures fury, we were helpless, tired, and scared.

chorus
Where do you run to when the noon is black as night
And you hear a rumbling freight train, but there isn't one in sight
And you feel your body rising, though you say it can't be so
Well I'm telling you it happened in the Shinnston Tornado.

Can you feel your body rising? Does the thought of dying make you so afraid?
Do you doubt the power of God when the storm surrounds you?
Get on your knees and pray that you'll be save.

Chorus

They say there was nothing like it and there may not be again,
when the Shinnston tornado came down and took a spin.....

where do you run to when the noon's as black as night
and you hear a rumbling freight train but there isn't one in sight and you feel your body risin' though you say it can't be so,
well I'm telling you it happened in the Shinnston tornado.

THIS IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST VERSE OF THE SONG AND WE BELIEVE THE CHORUS IS
Where do you run to when the noon is dark as night, and you feel your body?

June 23, 1944, a tornado ripped through Shinnston, WV, leaving 153 dead and massive property damage. There was a song written about it, but I don't know who wrote it or who sang it, as I've only heard it once.

As this is West Virginia Day (Happy 145!) I was in the middle of a 'Name all the songs that mention West Virgina' contest, and got nothing but blank looks when I put this one in.

I was very surprised in not finding it here. (The FIRST time Mudcat has failed me for obscure song lyrics!!!)

Does anyone have the lyrics?
