Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Soldier boy Date: 06 Jul 09 - 09:30 PM I said in an earlier posting that I had'nt been to this festival for a few years and that was because the last time I went to it,to be honest, I thought it had lost much of its 'sparkle' and I came away from it feeling a bit underwhelmed. But Hey, guess what?, this years festival was brilliant!! I can't put my finger on what made such a difference this year but the atmosphere everywhere was electrifying. It could be because of the lovely weather, brilliant line up, the heaving and smashing contribution by the 'fringe' in singarounds and musician sessions in the pubs or just that we are in a recession and everybody decided what the heck we are ruddy well going to enjoy ourselves despite the doom and gloom. Whatever it was, the majic worked, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I enjoyed myself so much that I will definately be back next year. Lots of praise and congratulations to the organisers, stewards, volunteers and helpers that made this festival so really special. very well done to you all and thank you. Chris. |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Clecky Dave Date: 06 Jul 09 - 04:15 PM Thanks for all the great comments, but thanks mostly for coming and enjoying the festival. Without you it would be nothing. Thanks again to everyone who had involvement with it. My first festival and I've now thrown away the "L" plates. Cheers to all |

Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: SylviaN Date: 06 Jul 09 - 08:14 AM JoeG Thanks for saying what you did about Tom Bliss - I was certainly one who needed my hanky. |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: SylviaN Date: 06 Jul 09 - 08:10 AM I had a great time - thanks once again to all those who worked so hard behind the scenes to make sure it happened. Just one question - who managed to put the good word in about the weather? We expected rain, and it didn't appear. Is there a special e-mail address we need to use? Seriously though, great weekend. Sylvia |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Joe G Date: 06 Jul 09 - 08:10 AM Great to hear part of Tom Bliss's set from the Friday evening at Clecky on the Durbervilles as I couldn't be there. They played 'The Violin' (one of the first of Tom's songs that I heard and still a favourite) and 'Godspeed' (probably all time favourite of mine). Very poignant and I bet I was not the only person with a lump in the throat on hearing these beautiful songs. We'll miss you Tom! |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Mr Happy Date: 06 Jul 09 - 08:05 AM Particularly enjoyed the 'Rhubarb Tarts'!! - Hilarious moves, & soo colourful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7edZuyjeFDk & http://www.wildfolk.co.uk/artiste_main_rhubarbs.php |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Mr Happy Date: 06 Jul 09 - 07:54 AM Fab seshes in Wickham front rooms, great to be in sunny environment away from that gloomy, stuffy middle room we usually have had to be in. Superb Morris displays in car park & lovely, delicious fc&p in little park in the shade from scorchio sun! Other good sesh Sat afternoon & night in Commercial. For me, a much enhanced do than I've had in Cleck for a while. Also a trip tp Music Room - luxury, far too good for likes o' me! |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Cath Date: 05 Jul 09 - 05:21 PM Jenny and I thoroughly enjoyed the concert on Friday night. She was knocked out by Tom Bliss (who she hadn't seen before) and we both thought Balshazzar's Feast were magic - Holmfirth next year maybe? Mrs Ackroyd - well what can you say? Thank you. Cath |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Mo the caller Date: 05 Jul 09 - 04:20 PM A good weekend. Plenty of folk enjoying the sun and displays but enough inside to make good sessions, and concerts (well, the booked artists had no choice- they had to be inside) Thanks to the hardworking team. |

Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Clecky Dave Date: 03 Jul 09 - 02:10 AM Hooray Hooray, the festivals today I hope you are all of good cheer The plans are all set and the weather I bet will be showery, but not like last year. The parade will take place, at a nice steady pace In costume we all will look fine The songs and the tunes will ring out quite soon and the landlords will never call time (only kidding, some of them might!!!) |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: ossonflags Date: 03 Jul 09 - 01:45 AM Gig cancelled so on our way!! |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Soldier boy Date: 02 Jul 09 - 09:02 PM All packed up and ready to go - looking forward to it. P.S : Do any pubs in cleckheaton serve proper hand pulled 'real ale' nowadays? last time I came to this festival it was a desert and you could'nt find a good pint of real ale anywhere apart from one oasis of a pub down the road towards Heckmondwyke. I can't remember the pubs name but I think it served Old Mill Brewery Bitter which was really nice. But it was out of town and quite a trail to walk down to it - so 'please' is there now a pub (or more than one pub) in the centre of Cleckheaton that serves good real ale? I just hope that Clecky has caught up with the times and has come round to offering good ale. In Huddersfield where I come from the only pubs doing really well and surviving the recession, apart from those that are noted for their food, are the real ale pubs who have made the effort to capture this particular market. All the rest are suffering or closing down. So please delight me and many of my friends by guiding me to a good real ale pub in Clecky. Yours (hopefully) Chris |

Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: Soldier boy Date: 30 Jun 09 - 08:45 PM Just wondered what the arrangements were for camping. I haven't been for a few years but last time I came to this festival it was OK to just turn up at the festival office in the town hall and purchase camping tickets and then drive down to the camp site. There was also camping available for everyone, whether you had a weekend season ticket or not (which is great news for people like me who might go to the odd concert but also really enjoy the fringe)and it was about £5.00 per night per person. So does all the above still apply this year or are there any changes? |

Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 29 Jun 09 - 06:07 PM 4 of those are in the set at the moment - but it is the Friday night, I'm afraid, so you'll have to listen through the ether. Doing 'Turn and Face' for the very last time (last Friday in Kingswinford) was NOT easy. Thank God I had a tame thick-skinned-banjo-player (his own definition) to sing it for me - because I can't manage to get through it myself under normal circumstances. Knowing we might never perform it again, was - well... (though actually the reality had hit hardest in Islington the night before - boy, that was a tough one). Anyway - I'll do my best. T |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: GUEST,Joe G Date: 29 Jun 09 - 04:36 PM Hi Tom When are you on? Unfortunately we have commitments Friday & Sat nights but would love to catch you if we can!! Boat to Burhou, Godspeed (of course!), Spirit of Ecstacy, Homecoming Day, The Violin, Turn & Face the Wind (though I now know of course the TN usually sings this!), Four Foot Track - that would make a start! |
Subject: RE: Cleckheaton 2009 From: skipy Date: 29 Jun 09 - 04:35 PM Was hoping to make it up there this year, but it is the 50th anni. of the Morris side that one of our sons dances with (Icknield Way)so our skills need down here, herding 200+ morris men & ladies around & of course running the bar for the cielidh! Have a good one. |
