Garage Rock Icon and Seeds Front-man Sky Saxon Dies in Hospital
6/25/2009 By Brock Thiessen

According to various media reports, Seeds front-man and all-around garage rock legend Sky Saxon has died. Saxon, who was born Richard Marsh, was hospitalized in South Austin, Texas, on Monday (June 22) due to an undiagnosed condition and remained in critical condition in the ICU in St. David's South Austin Hospital, where he passed away this morning, LA Weekly's West Coast Sound blog reports.

Saxon's wife, Sabrina, broke the news earlier today on her Facebook, writing "Sky has passed over and YaHoWha is waiting for him at the gate. He will soon be home with his Father. I'm so sorry I couldn't keep him here with us. More later. I'm sorry."

At this point, the cause of death is unknown, but doctors suspect an infection of the internal organs, Austin360.com reports.

Many believe Saxon was born around 1946, but his exact date of birth is not clear.

Saxon founded the Seeds in 1965 and went on to pen such garage classics as "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem to Make You Mine." After the Seeds broke up in 1970, Saxon joined the spiritual commune the Source Family, adopted the name Sunlight and played periodically with the Source Family band YaHoWha 13.

Saxon was to join a Seeds/Love/Electric Prunes tour this summer as part of the California '66 Revue. No announcements have been made yet regarding the future of the tour.

That's really sad, I'm too young to remember the sixties but I love 'pushing too hard'.

Also, check out 'A Faded Picture', one of the most genuinely sad songs ever written.

"I Can't Seem to Make you Mine" was one of the strangest top 40 songs of all time.

now I've found this thread, just wanna say..

i was one of those UK teenagers reading the NME back in the mid 70's
who took a chance on buying mail order import "Seeds" LPs..

.. such an exciting time of my life;
a vital part of my pre punk music education,
and my clumsy attempts at refining my anti prog rock electic guitar playing..

I [in respect of one of my longer term mudcat IDs "punkfolkrocker"]
do not feel any emotional loss at hearing this sad news,
why should I !!?,
I never knew the bloke,
but I do want to celebrate his bands great influence on my personal development
as a conasewer of histories finest trash aesthetic pop rock music.

cheers and g'night Sky.

Sad news htrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtrtris early song "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" was recently used on a TV ad ( don't know what it was advertising) but he will always be associated with that brilliant anthem "Pushin' To Hard" I first came across Sky's music during the early seventies on Lenny Kaye's compilation NUGGETS. I then managed to get hold of some of the early Seeds albums including an original copy of WEB OF SOUND album on a stall in Portobello Market for 30P! Their early stuff was solid proto-punk but they later developed a more pastoral psychedelic sound.
He later changed his name from Saxon to Sunlight. During the Punk/New wave boom of the late seventies I remember buying a record by Sky Sunlight and The New Seeds - but for me he never recaptured that raw innocent sound of the early Seeds records. RIP
