A hot English summer!

Surely we must Pimm.

The classic recipe is one measure of Pimms No 1, two measures of lemonade, one slice of lemon (round), one of orange, one of cucumber, a sprig of mint and maybe a couple of loose mint leaves, served over ice in a tumbler.

For today's sophisticated palates, I was wondering about reducing the sweetness and amount of the lemonade - or using something more sour and less sweet than say Schweppes or R. Whites.

Mabe leave the mint out of the glass, but make a really sour and tangy lemonade by blending 4 lemons and a big handful of lemon mint, then putting it in a heatproof jug, pouring boiling water over it then straining and popping in the fridge (or freezer if impatient) to get cold. This however will be a still lemonade (as well as very sour).

Thoughts?

Sounds lovely Richard, Pimms is usually too sweet for me. A small bunch of lovage goes well too.

?use juice of sl. green lemons and dilute?
Even the bottled 'Real-lemon' concentrate is fairly sweet.

I still prefer the Travis McGee.

I prefer a Caipirinha ... made with vodka .. 3, no make it 4 ounces of the stuff, add some sugar, thrown in a blender of ice .... grind it all up ... pour into a tall glass ... add some fresh lime and presto.

drink while barbecuing some whole sardines on a grill.

serve the sardines on some crusty white bread.

once finished.

make another Caiprinha ... or two.

drink while watching a summer sunset.

Bruise some fresh mint leave with ice, brush them in powdered sugar, return to glass, top with GOOD Bourbon (like Knob Creek or Bookers -- not that blended crap like Four Roses and ferchrissakes, not sour mash like Jack Daniels!). Sit on the porch and enjoy over a lazy afternoon.

Or

Equal parts frozen lemonade and Bourbon. Run it through a blender. Drink it from a glass.

That all sounds delicious (except for the cucumber part), but the forecast is for a high of 65F (18.3C) tomorrow.

I must be a real yahoo! - I always mix Pimms with tonic which helps with the sweetness angle - and if I think far enough in advance soaking all my fruit in gin first!

Pimms is the only drink for the English summer. Try making it with Ginger Beer instead of lemonade. Best served in pint glasses with lots of fruit in it [remember this is part of your 5 a day] and lots of ice. Another pint Eyelander?

Mmmmmm I love a nice glass of pimms on a hot summer's day. That's reminded me to pick up a bottle at the supermarket this week

RB, the ginger beer doesn't taste like ginger beer when it is in Pimms, you just don't get an overly sweet taste and a slight tinge of spice. You can also try tonic water. It has to be one of the best ways of getting some of your 5 a day

Pimms 3 is the brandy one, usually served warmed and mixed with clear apple juice on a cold winters day

We had it with lemonade, strawberries, oranges and ice at a wedding over last weekend. Most refreshing whilst one was playing croquet (honest, I was)!

Karen has a bottle of "Winter Pimms"-----it tastes quite odd on a hot summer's day,and will NOT,I predict, catch on at Henley Regatta, where I fell in the river TWICE from my boat yesterday (too much Henry Westons Special Reserve Cider ).
