Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Bobert Date: 05 Jul 09 - 08:17 PM Well, the bass is easier than the banjo, Rap... I can play both and believe me, don't fill in fir the banjo player if ya can't play one... Bass??? Different story... The joke goes, "What do they call the guy who hangs around with the band?" The bass player... Nevermind... B~ |
Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Rapparee Date: 05 Jul 09 - 08:04 PM Pay my way out and I'll do it. Never played one before, but like a banjo, how hard can it be? |
Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Bobert Date: 05 Jul 09 - 07:00 PM Hey, I can't blame the bass player for this... He ain't never heard north Mississipi hill country blues and it ain't all that structured in terms of meter... Yeah, you don't get it overnight... Ain't no Piedmont or Chicago style blues... It's quirky... And on "Catfish Blues" I allowed my self to get sucked into both the bass and harp players 1-4-5 groove for one measure, then had to bring it back to strictly 1-4 and I actually turned to the bass player and mouthed "One Four"... I'm sure that that was embarrassing to him but he was gonna 1-4-5 it if I hadn't done that... No one really picked up on it but I'm sure that didn't set well with him... Well, I sent him a nice email today and apologized for that and for not announcing everyone's name during the last song... Two "my bads"... Hopefully, he'll be okay with things next weekend... If not, I'm just going to get someone to play a conga drum which is what I should have done anyway... B~ |

Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: SINSULL Date: 05 Jul 09 - 09:28 AM Start by smacking the bass player. Bobert, we are always are own worst critics. It may not have been as good as you planned but I will bet it was great.Too bad it wasn't videoed.(is that a word?) SINS |
Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Bobert Date: 05 Jul 09 - 09:19 AM Well, I'm glad that last night wasn't next week at Sadalia 'cuase I woulda given it a C+ at best... The new bass player, who I had never met, showed 5 minutes before were to go on... I couldn't hear eith by Back Porch'r or Lowebow... Folks in the audience came up afterwards and siad they thought it was great but I know differntly... Going to have to tweek a few things before next weekend... B~ |
Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Bobert Date: 04 Jul 09 - 12:22 PM Ahhhhh, not too sure if anyone will be recordin' or videoin' this evenin's performance... I know that there will be lots of still piccures taken as Gary Smallwood's ladu, Sesh, is quite a good photograher... Maybe next weeks will get taped... It's a big ass show and I'm purdy sure it does get taped and maybe I can get ahold of a copy and get it to ya, oldster, and you can do with it what you want... I ain't all that technically developed... What you are reading now is the extent of my knowledge about these things... I'm a carburator kinda guy in a fuel injection era... Just loaded the drums into my Toyota station wagon... BTW, someone asked about them... I play a bass (kick) drum with my right foot and play high hat and snare with my left foot... The high hat has a tamborine on top of it... On open chording I can also use my heavy brass slide as a drum stick on the top cymbl of the high hat which is purdy cool and something I haven't seen other OMB (One Man Band) musicans do... B~ |

Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Bobert Date: 04 Jul 09 - 11:46 AM open mike, No, a lowebow is a stringed instrument named after it's inventer and primere buider, John Lowe of Memphis, Tenn... It is a cigar box with two 34 inch dowel rods for a neck... It has four strings... One big fat .070 over the top dowel and three trebel strings over the bottom dowel... It has three electric pickups built into the cigar box... One for the bass string with it's own output port and the other two catch the three other strings... It has two nuts... One is positioned like a regular guitar and the other is movable up and down the neck with a Sharpie with a capo behind it... The best way to perform with the Lowebow is thru two amps... One amp for the bass and another for the trebble... That way it sounds as if you are playing two instruments at once... There are about 100 Lowebows out there and maybe 20 of us who have figured out how to tune them and play them... It's what I call the "secret weapon" in a challenge because it really does crank out one heck of alot of music... Still ponderin' the R.L. song??? I might just have to start my set with it, finish the song and then do a more traditional 12 bar 1-4-5 chord blues song and let the Jaywalkers in at that point... Then I switch to the Back Porcher (slab geetar, Google "Honeydripper") and my resonator for the remainder of the set... B~ |
Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Claymore Date: 03 Jul 09 - 11:45 PM Good Luck! I wish I could make it but I'm playing after the Parade in Shepherdstown, at Mt Airy MD. Though only two other members of my group, Shennandoah Circle, can make it, both are women so we go as Dear in the Headlights. Not much blues, but several laments and a number of Neal Gow and O'Carolan tunes as well as jigs and strathspeys. Yet Luray is only about 2-3 hours from here; maybe next time But in any case "Have Fun" while you're doing it... |
Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: open mike Date: 03 Jul 09 - 11:19 PM what's a Lowebow, a musical saw? is it like a lowboy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowboy_(trailer) |
Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Bobert Date: 03 Jul 09 - 09:22 PM I'm more concerned about the challenge... Tomorrow there wpon't be a clock on us and a bunch of judges... I can get away with whatever... I'm still trying to solve some probblems with next weeks set... I do an R.L. Burnside song "Miss Maybeele" that is is a killer song with me on drums and my Lowebow but there ain't no room for either bass of harmonica... Still trying to figure out how to incorporate it next week... Maybe it will coem to me tonight or tomorrow... No matter, it's a problem... B~ |

Subject: RE: Bobert Debuts New Band July 4th... From: Bobert Date: 03 Jul 09 - 07:36 PM Yeah, Desert Dancer... Google up "Ben Prestage" and check out his U-Tube stuff... I set my drums up purdy much the way he does... Okay, I use a slight different foot pedal arrangement between snare and high hat... I also use my slide as a drum stick on the high hat... Ben doesn't do that either... There's a reason why there are only 3 of us in the band and it has to do with a "blues challenge" at the Sadalia Blues Festival next weekend... I came in 2nd last year in the solo/duo category and was invited to play this year with all entrance requirements waived (thank you, Harry...) but they aren't doing solo/dou this year... Just band... That means 3 or more so I have found these guys, who BTW are real good, and so we fill the requirement... B~ |
