Every Thursday 8.pm PROMPT START Here is our programme for the Thursdays leading up to our summer break during the month of August and then the first few weeks afterwards. This includes what is probably our most adventurous booking ever with the Magnolia Sisters on July 16th:- July 9th * £7.00 * LEON ROSSELSON & ROBB JOHNSON – "THE LIBERTY TREE" Not an ordinary club night, Leon and Robb's show on Tom Paine will take the entire evening. Part of the "Thomas Paine & Lewes Festival". July 16th * £7.00 * THE MAGNOLIA SISTERS An amazing coup for us as we present the leading female Cajun band from Louisiana - Ann Savoy, Jane Vidrine, Anya Burgess, and Lisa Reed. July 23rd * £6.00 * JERRY EPSTEIN & RALPH BODINGTON Jerry has been involved in traditional music for 40 years and was director of the New York Eisteddfod. Ralph is a superb performer of banjo tunes and ballads from the old-time Southern mountain culture. July 30th * Free Admission * GRAND END-OF-SEASON OPEN NIGHT All welcome, particularly performers who have not been at the Royal Oak before – then we are closed for the month of August CLOSED DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST – THEN WE START THE NEW SEASON WITH A BANG WITH AN EVENING WITH THE COPPER FAMILY ON SEPTEMBER 3rd. Sept 3rd * £6.00 * THE COPPER FAMILY Jon, Jill and John and some of their children will be on hand as we welcome one of the regular visits from England's leading traditional singing family. Sept 10th * £6.00 * PETE COE One of the top names on the scene. A fine singer and multi-instrumentalist. He will even stepdance as he plays! Sept 17th * £6.00 * PETE SHEPHEARD, TAM SPIERS & ARTHUR WATSON Three fine performers of Scots traditional song, all with a deep understanding of the genre and all with excellent voices. Accompaniments on melodeon, fiddle and whistle Sept 24th * £6.00 * MICHAEL MARRA Scotland's top songwriter is also a very fine singer and accompanies himself beautifully on piano and guitar. Oct 1st * £6.00 * BEVERLY SMITH & CARL JONES Old- Timey tunes and songs accompanied by banjo, guitar, mandolin and fiddle by two top American performers on tour. They were great on their last two visits. Oct 8th * £5.00 * JEFF WESLEY Making a very welcome return from Northamptonshire, Jeff Wesley will be singing traditional English songs with that note of authority and authenticity stamped on every note. October 22nd * £6.00 * DAVE RUCH Another top American visitor, this time from northern New York State. Fine local songs and multi-instrumental tune playing. Issue no 237 covers the months of June and July. They are packed with adverts for various folk festivals, folk music record companies, specialist shops, instrument makers and other services as well as details of all the folk song and dance events in our area and several pages of reviews of CDs and books. To obtain copies of this free magazine as it is published, please send SAE's to Vic Smith at the address below. It is also the address to send album review copies to. Potential advertisers are also asked to contact Vic for a statement of our advertising rates. The copy date has just passed for the August/September issue. However, it should be mentioned that once the available space has been filled, no more adverts can be accepted even if they are received BEFORE the copy date. With this in mind, it is worth contacting the editors before the copy date to state your intentions and reserve advertising space even if you have not got final details or you copy prepared. These will be on the last Sunday of the month from 3.30 – 5.30pm. They have just been booked, once again for the largest and most prestigious dance in our area, the BRIGHTON MIDWINTER CEILIDH at the Corn Exchange in Brighton on December 20th.
