Don't know for definite, but I suspect that this is a John Tams re-write, which he has done quite a lot for 'Sharpe' and other things. Nothing necessarily wrong with that. I think it's actually a fusion of 'The Bold Grenadier' rather than 'The Nightingale', and 'Banks of Red Roses', though.

I was recently watching "Sharpe's Challenge", and in the episode (just as he arrives in India), the song in the background (sung by John Tamm) goes:-

..."now I'm off to India, for seven long years,
drinking wine and strong liquire,instead of small beers,
but if ever I return again,it will be all in the spring,
and we'll go roaming through the banks of red roses".

Either this is the fusion of two songs - "the Nightingale" and "on the banks of red roses", or their is a different song that the above is part of.

Can anyone shed some light please?
