I seem to remember this song with a grand chorus. Is it much sung these days?

No.
Not around here.
I think Johnny Handle from the High Level Ranters was the singer I heard. Or was it Lou Killen?

It still gets sung in Tyneside & Durham. You'll find it in the Northumbrian Minstrelsy, or just click HERE.

Thanks Sean,

Bob Davenport maybe? Can it be sung by a Manc / Scouser from Cheshire without loosing the rhymes and the charm?

Swann Arcade used to do a cracking version. BTW FWIW a mate of mine used to live in Charlton(Not Chorlton!) about 500 yards froma pub originally called The Anti Gallican which had been renamed...but they hadn't removed the stone inscribed name...

I seem to remember it from the "Along the Coaly Tyne" LP many years ago. Think I only ever heard it sung live once - in an Irish folk club, probably by a visiting singer - Steve Turner, maybe? Like you, Les, I find the tune wedged in a corner of my brain.

Regards

Yep I remember Swan Arcade's version. I've been trying to find it recently. Am I right in thinking it's on their first LP ( No CD of which is available of course) - I'd pay god money for one of those as it has "The Bright Shining Morning" on it as well as "The Hunt is up." They were a cracking act!

Many moons ago I lived in Charlton, SE London and knew "The Anti Gallican", half a pint of Charringtons and the world was our oyster!

I think it was renamed "The Frog And Radiator". I hope it's reverted!
