Can anyone help? I am trying to locate a version of "Up Above My Head" which is fixed in my memory, but it was on someone's compilation and I don't know who it was by. Very tight slightly odd harmonies, Appalachian/south USA sort of sound, oldish recording I am sure, trad rather than contemporary. Extraordinarily good. Ring a bell with anyone?

More helpful hints: it was all out of rhythm, no rocking it up like Rosetta Tharpe. And there was a gorgeous slow slide up to the third of the chord the first "head" note.

Is this the Ken Whitely gospel song?

I remember a version of this song by 60's British folk/rocker/blues singer "Long John Baldry" I believed he shared vocals with Rod Stewart ( one of Stewart's first recordings.) It was a bit mad, catchy and rather jubilant take on the original Sister Rosetta Tharpe tune.

There are a zillion "original" versions-- some in southern gospel, some in bluegrass, some in blues gospel... you cain't keep a good gospel song down, noways.

Why they are all original versions is because this is a song designed to let the singer/band let 'er rip on their own interpretation.
