Subject: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 08 Jul 09 - 04:38 PM OK, Greg Stephens just told me about these lads, in the 'Young Folk' thread....and...my ears have gone UP! You know, like they did when I first heard Seth Lakeman.. Just WOW! Soooo....here they are, richly deserving a thread of their very own, because these lads are going to filling marquees all over the country, you just watch 'em. The Young Un's - Myspace - and every song on there is excellent! WHAT voices! :0) I've just asked them over to my page, and I'm about to put their music on to play on there now...FANTASTIC! Thanks, Greg. x |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 08 Jul 09 - 04:43 PM Could someone ask them to put some information about themselves on their page, please, because it'd be great for people to read all about them. :0) |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,Joe G Date: 08 Jul 09 - 04:53 PM Well of course they are good Lizzie - they are from Hartlepool where I am originally from! Haven't managed to see them yet but hope too soon! By the way have you heard Roger Davies? |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:07 PM Err, I've flagged these guys up before. Wicker Man inspired Neo-Folkers, nice guys too: The Hare and the Moon |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:10 PM Huh? Am I going bonkers or was this thread several sentences shorter & several responses broader, than when I first glanced at it? What? |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Acorn4 Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:12 PM Saw them at Gate to Southwell and they have that combination of being great singers and entertainers as well. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:13 PM To explain, I thought it was a thread for 'new folk' by young people. Eh oh... |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:21 PM That's the other thread, CS, just below this one... That's how I found out about The Young Un's... :0) No worries... x |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:22 PM Oops! Forgot to tell you, the thread you want is called 'Young Folk' |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:30 PM PHEW!!! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:40 PM In my opinion, the Young Un's have good folk voices - Seth Lakeman has a good pop voice, with which he sings self-penned, local, traditional stories. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Rifleman (inactive) Date: 08 Jul 09 - 05:50 PM "Wicker Man inspired Neo-Folkers" I cringe visibly at the mere thought of that! |

Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Spleen Cringe Date: 08 Jul 09 - 06:20 PM Oi! Behave! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: stallion Date: 08 Jul 09 - 06:45 PM Ok, the young'uns , Sean, Michael and David , great voices, great company and I like to think we are friends although the last time I was with them they said "spot the middle class folk singer", I think it was humour. They are really, really good and not only that what you see and hear is what you get, totally unpretentious gems, good to know that the future is in their hands. So, to any folk club hirers they will blow you all away with their refreshing youthful interpretation of the traditional genre which draws so heavily on the Wilson/Waterson that it will not be unrecognisable but has a vim and vigour that reflects their youth, am I jealoous? Well maybe to have my time again and sing with these three very talented lads Peter |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Banjiman Date: 08 Jul 09 - 07:11 PM They are on the wife's new album due out in August. Great lads, great voices and a great club act. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: SaltyWalt Date: 08 Jul 09 - 07:30 PM I look forward to performing with them again. We were paired up for sets at Scarborough Seafest because I was w/o my band and they were w/o their frontman Sean. This will not be completely obvious for those of you with fliers, because Richard Grainger was in the grips of some sort of capricious joke and listed them (even introduced them to me) as "Pirate John". They were so polite that they didn't tell me of his prank until I had already introduced them as that 2 or 3 times (trying to plug the local boys). This frustration led to the name of the first CD "To Hell With Pirate John". I'm glad to have a part in that now . ;) They were great fun and quite supportive. I appreciated Mike's head full of music student theory and know how, and David's Rustic humor and voice. As an American, I didn't know that anyone in England really had a voice like his , let alone anyone under 45! I must write and bug them and not just prattle on here, but I saw folks talking, and I thought I had 2 cents to lend. . . |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Folknacious Date: 08 Jul 09 - 07:43 PM The Young Un is what? soddin' illiterate northerners . . . hrrumpphh |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Herga Kitty Date: 08 Jul 09 - 07:45 PM What Stallion and Banjiman said. They've been booked at Herga twice in the last 2 years, and I hope I'll meet and hear them at Whitby again this year. Kitty |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: nutty Date: 08 Jul 09 - 07:47 PM They will be at Saddleworth Festival in 9 days time. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Pistachio Date: 09 Jul 09 - 05:37 AM The sound Young'uns make, as I have said on another thread... brings on an involuntary shudder (one of those cozy feelings)... they are such talented lads, have incredible harmonies and must not be missed. Check out their gig list and get there. You will not be disappointed. Hope to get to join harmonies at Saddleworth!! Hazel.x |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Willa Date: 09 Jul 09 - 07:38 AM Great voices, tremendous rapport and a deep interest in what they are singing about - not to mention their song-writing talents. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: SylviaN Date: 09 Jul 09 - 11:58 AM I know I've added my support to them on the other thread, but I'm going to do it again. Sean, Michael and David are lovely lads and great singers. I'll add my voice to those who say you should book them - you won't be disappointed. Sylvia |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: MoorleyMan Date: 09 Jul 09 - 02:29 PM Hear hear - and sing sing ! Stupendous talents, all three. I'll miss 'em next weekend 'cos I can't be at Saddleworth, but they'll be guesting at the Black Swan folk club in York on 13th August which'll be a fun night. MM |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 10 Jul 09 - 04:08 AM Hey, hasn't this become a lovely thread! SUCH support for these lads. Great to see. :0) |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,PaulG Date: 10 Jul 09 - 02:07 PM Book them! I travel all over to see them. Outstanding act and show...very unique. True talent. And what a wonderful CD 'Plastic Cod'ed's is. Sean is an excellent songwriter! Paul |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,North Date: 10 Jul 09 - 02:39 PM And their at South Shields Folk Club Sunday 12th July 7:30pm http://www.southshieldsfolkclub.co.uk/ |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Folknacious Date: 10 Jul 09 - 04:10 PM OK, I'm, going to form a band called the Grocers' Apostrophes. Or should that be the Grocers Apostrophe's ? Eats, shoots, leaves . . . |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,CSL Date: 13 Jul 09 - 07:34 AM They went down a treat on their 2nd visit to South Shields last night. Thought they were good last year but last night they just excelled. Not only a great night of singing but great crack, great voices and their hearts are in the tradition. They finished the first half with a medley of Shanties dedicated to Johnny Collins. A fitting tribute to Johnny who gave us a rousing gig exactly 1 year ago to the night. Top Job lads ! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: MoorleyMan Date: 13 Jul 09 - 11:26 AM And they did a great little set at the Nature's World free festival earlier in the day as a warmup. The lads are going from strength to strength. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 13 Jul 09 - 12:44 PM I'm so impressed with all these positive messages. See? My golden ears are never wrong! They always let me know when 'special' comes along. :0) |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: old git Date: 13 Jul 09 - 12:59 PM A pity you're a couple of years behind the rest of us in recognizing the talent of the Young'Uns (sic) ,Lizzie! geoff t |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 13 Jul 09 - 01:03 PM Ah yes, but at least I'm talking about them on here, geoff... ;0) Heck I was 25 years late discovering the Oysterband, but when I did....Ohhhhhhhh! Same with the lads in this case.. I always get there... :0) |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,DaveG Date: 13 Jul 09 - 01:06 PM They did a superb set last night at the Shields! Loved it! Note perfect in every song. Excellent sound. I think we should start a campaign to make these guys famous....spread the word! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,old git Date: 13 Jul 09 - 01:08 PM go back over the posts for the last year and you'll see some of us have been talking about them for a long time! but they are very good! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 13 Jul 09 - 01:28 PM "I think we should start a campaign to make these guys famous....spread the word!" Well, I already have them on my Myspace page..front page..and their music playing there too...and they're on my Facebook and Youtube page as well, and this thread..and..and... It doesn't take long to spread the word out, if enough people do that together... |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Banjiman Date: 13 Jul 09 - 01:34 PM and they're on Wendy's new album, that's bound to make them famous........... |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,PaulG Date: 14 Jul 09 - 12:50 PM Yeah they are known by a lot of people and people have been talking about them but why are they not headlining more festivals?? They have the all round package - better entertainment and more enjoyable than some of the so called 'bigger' groups. And why are they not being played on Mike Harding's BBC show? |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Banjiman Date: 14 Jul 09 - 02:18 PM Because they haven't 1/ employed a plugger 2/ They have self released their CDs (rather than on a record label 3/ They don't have an agent...... i.e They haven't joined the industry in the same way that most artists that get played on Mike Harding and get booked as festival headliners have. Makes you think doesn't it? |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,PaulG Date: 14 Jul 09 - 02:26 PM There is so much talent which gets overlooked because they don't have representation from agents etc. Real shame Banjiman. These guys and others need to be plugged more! Paul |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Banjiman Date: 14 Jul 09 - 02:57 PM I forgot they haven't employed expensive P.R. either. Paul, I agree 100%. The question is though can you make it BIG without playing the industry games and having someone's money behind you? In the cottage industry that most of us are part of it's hard to break through. I have booked them twice at KFFC and I will be doing so again. Not that this will make that much difference to their careers! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,PaulG Date: 14 Jul 09 - 05:10 PM The play at big festivals but should be playing even bigger stages. Your completely right though Banjiman... |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,SandraK Date: 15 Jul 09 - 01:47 PM True stars! A fantastic act. Keep up the great work lads! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 15 Jul 09 - 04:31 PM Can someone put a thread about them on the BBC for me, please. I'd do it, but there's no point, as it'll be removed. But if you could all spread the word over there, get those who support them in here to go over to the BBC Folk & Acoustic Board...and on to fRoots as well, er...I can't post there either. If you want these guys to 'break through', then all of YOU have to be their agents, and get talking about them all over the internet, send their Myspace page around.... And could someone please get them to put more information about themselves on their Myspace page. That page doesn't tell people enough about them, and it's their Shop Window to the World, far more so than their main site will ever be. The World uses Myspace and Youtube to send music around the place. I'm listening to their Podcast at the moment, which is on their Myspace page. (see link to that in my first post) Honestly, these lads should be out there, beyond the folk world too, as someone's said above, because they have immense talent. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,PaulG Date: 15 Jul 09 - 04:39 PM I can't get on either!! Howay everyone, lets spread the word!! HELP THE CAMPAIGN! Paul |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: old git Date: 15 Jul 09 - 04:47 PM Maybe someone ought to ask them first if they want to "break through" or be "beyond the folk world" |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: old git Date: 15 Jul 09 - 04:55 PM Sean sometimes posts on Mudcat as Plastic Cod'ead geoff |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,beardedfolkie Date: 15 Jul 09 - 05:21 PM I'm sure they do want to make it - they just need someone to elevate them upwards and recognise their talent properly. Smashing lads i have to say Jim |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Folknacious Date: 15 Jul 09 - 05:43 PM If they want to "go further" it would help them if they got a better name. Instant confusion with old TV sitcom featuring Ade Edmondson etc. apart from anything else like not being very inspiring and badly punctuated. Mind you, I thought the Beatles was a stupid name - still do - so what do I know?! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,PaulG Date: 15 Jul 09 - 05:52 PM People love the name and it suits their youngful image and style. Plus they are young!! So that post was rubbish. You clearly know nothing!! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,Dave Date: 16 Jul 09 - 02:26 AM Folknacious - there will be a mutiny if you say stuff like that about these lads. It was a bit of a stupid comment like! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: nutty Date: 16 Jul 09 - 06:43 AM People new to The Young Un's assume that because they haven't heard of them before, they must be new to folk. Nothing is further from the truth. Here in the North-East we have watched them learn their craft over many years. Living just down the road from the The Wilson Family it is easy to see how their particular style developed and, of course, being much younger than the Wilson's (who have either reached or are approaching middle age) their name was a natural description of who they were and who they were following. Believe me, if the lads wanted to make 'it big' they have all the skills and the contacts they need, I'm just thankful that we have a new generation coming through who love the genre as much as I do. Don't forget they are at Saddleworth Festival this weekend. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,Dave Date: 16 Jul 09 - 11:25 AM GET THEM BOOKED!! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Alio Date: 16 Jul 09 - 11:43 AM I did - we have! They're appearing here in Saddleworth all day Saturday and Sunday. Ali x |

I've just found 14 separate videos of the same gig of the Young Un's! More shortly when I've loaded them up. These lads are just soooooo darn wonderful! Coope Boyes & Simpson, are you 'out there'? The 6 of you together would be absolute magic! Maybe Lester could have them on Folkwaves? |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 23 Jul 09 - 03:38 PM You know those moments when you find treasure...and then, just when you think that's it, you find 14 more pieces? Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: mn Date: 23 Jul 09 - 04:42 PM Young'uns are great. I hope to see them someday in Poland. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Pistachio Date: 23 Jul 09 - 05:16 PM Ditto to all the above. It was amazing in the Civic Hall Saddleworth to see the Young Un's get a encore when they were second on the bill Saturday night. Amazing talent, lovely lads with a sense of humour, fun and timing that's a delight to witness. Go on, find their next gig and go. H.x |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: stallion Date: 24 Jul 09 - 03:59 AM Well, after hearing what i have heard being said by a southern folk club to a not such well known prospective performer in their neck of the woods, but mightily well repected in his own back yard, then it is hardly surprises me that the Young'uns stay up North "where it's vibrant and dynamic". Not every performer puts bums on seats but that shouldn't always be the criteria for selecting an act. Well I shall not rabbit on about inbreeding but introducing something different freshens up the bloodline! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Alio Date: 24 Jul 09 - 04:20 AM I first saw them at Dave Howden's 60th birthday party - sorry to give your age away Dave! I thought they were brilliant, and suggested them to the committee at the nest meeting. As Youngfolkie and Pistachio said, the atmosphere was electric in the Civic Hall in Saddleworth last Saturday. I was MCing, and the sound guy and I had decided that we were going to run a tight ship sound-wise. But if I hadn't given them an encore I think I'd have been lynched! Can't wait to see them again - hopefully back in Saddleworth next year (along with Hissyfit) - if I can get my own way! Ali xx |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Alio Date: 24 Jul 09 - 04:32 AM PS Haven't read all these messages in detail, but I don't think anyone has mentioned their new CD? They gave me 1 at the weekend, and as expected, it's brilliant, and really conjures them up. They could have been in my lounge! It's called Plastic Cod'eads, and was produced late 2008. Presumably it's available via their website. I recommend it. Ali x |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,youngfolkie Date: 24 Jul 09 - 07:36 AM The album Plastic Cod'eads is terrific and it features Sean's finest songs to date like "Sancta Bega" and "Jenny Waits For Me". Available from their online shop - recommended. One of the best folk albums I've heard. Great. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: BB Date: 26 Jul 09 - 12:14 PM "Well, after hearing what i have heard being said by a southern folk club to a not such well known prospective performer in their neck of the woods, but mightily well repected in his own back yard, then it is hardly surprises me that the Young'uns stay up North "where it's vibrant and dynamic". Not every performer puts bums on seats but that shouldn't always be the criteria for selecting an act. Well I shall not rabbit on about inbreeding but introducing something different freshens up the bloodline!" Stallion, do you really think this only happens in Southern folk clubs? If so, wake up! It happens all over, and will continue to happen until organisers are prepared to get out there and listen to new people, and then book on the strength of ability, rather than just a 'big name' or because someone comes cheap, so that their audiences will learn to trust them to always book something good, whether they've heard of them or not. It used to happen, once upon a time, but it seems rarely these days. Barbara |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 26 Jul 09 - 12:52 PM Re: Lizzie's 'Part 1' above. How do you go through life believing that the 'Rio' in 'Rio Grande' is pronounced 'rye-oh' rather than 'ree-oh'? This may be nitpicking to some - to me it's about credibility. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,PaulG Date: 27 Jul 09 - 09:38 AM All of the most credible sea shanty singers pronounce it in the same way so they are just following the example of peers. So your point is 'picky' and not valid. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: stallion Date: 27 Jul 09 - 03:11 PM No BB but a 5 hour trip down South isn't worth it if your only going to sing a couple of songs and the same goes for the trip up North, but I do question that particular persons judgement. As I said I agree that it is nationwide problem but the Young'uns live up North. The exact quote from the southern club was or as near as damit was "I am sick and tired of people who think they can sing sending me cd's and asking for a gig", a simple thanks but we are fully booked would have done, any way for my money they were the stand out stars of the last festival I was at, with refreshingly new material to our ears and scholarship to boot! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,vince Date: 28 Jul 09 - 01:56 PM Just bought The Young'Uns 'Plastic Cod'eads' album. Absolutely great, well worth it - recommended to all. 'Jenny waits for me' written by Sean is one of the best songs I've heard for a while. Buy it because it is superb! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Linda Kelly Date: 28 Jul 09 - 03:23 PM A friend presented us with a photo of Hissyfit singing with The Youngun's at Saddleworth-I may have it copied into a tattoo ......... |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 29 Jul 09 - 03:36 PM "All of the most credible sea shanty singers pronounce it in the same way so they are just following the example of peers." Yeah, right! Well I've never heard anyone pronounce 'Rio' as 'rye-oh'- until I played that clip. My personal opinion is that anyone who thinks that the Spanish word 'Rio' (meaning 'river') is pronounced 'rye-oh' must be studying for a certificate in advanced wazzockery! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 09 - 03:49 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIG5j7RyP8o |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Vin2 Date: 30 Jul 09 - 03:54 AM Rio, Rye-oh, tomato or tomarrrrto, depends p'raps on where you're from, your accent etc. Whilst it's usually written as Rio, I've often heard both pronunciations o'er t'years. Sounds grand to me whichever way. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,old git Date: 30 Jul 09 - 05:03 AM Shimrod, Listen to some Stan Hugill , Johnny Collins, Jim McGean etc etc..and you'll hear it pronounced that way....Stan said he always heard shanty singers pronounce it that way and saw no point in changing it. geoff t |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jul 09 - 06:24 AM My recollection is that Stan Hugill said he had heard people pronounce it both ways, but I might be quite wrong. My own impression is that saying Rye-O gives a faint whiff of schoolmasterly snobbishness, a sort of "Hey, I've researched this and I know this is how the old-timers sung it". It may be fine for the aficioados, buit I think Ree-O is more user friendly singing to Joe Public. But to return to the thread topic, the Young'Uns are terrific. I was so impressed by them on first hearing that I made the very strongest recommendation to Shrewsbury Folk Festival that they should be booked. My advice, alas, is not much valued in folk circles. I fear the group may well become the Old'Uns before the generality of the folk mainstream get round to taking an interest. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Vin2 Date: 30 Jul 09 - 10:09 AM Well, looking at their gig list on their web pages, i think they're doing pretty well so far both over here and gigs abroad like Germany and on the dates of the Shrewsbury festival (where i shall be) they're in Holland. Not bad for a young crew! Just had their cd Cod'Eads sent to me from their web so can't wait to play. Sithee |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jul 09 - 10:59 AM Great if they are doing well. They deserve to. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,youngfolkie Date: 30 Jul 09 - 11:25 AM I think we should get behind these lads and make sure people who don't know them, get to know them as soon as possible. Word of mouth is a powerful tool and one listen to their latest album, organisers will be blown away!! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST Date: 30 Jul 09 - 02:44 PM 'Ree-oh' vs 'Rye-oh' "Stan said he always heard shanty singers pronounce it that way and saw no point in changing it." I can only assume that Mr Hughill's informants must have got that particular shanty from print (otherwise they would have pronounced it 'Ree-oh', as it is pronounced by native Spanish speakers) - which raises some interesting questions! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Banjiman Date: 31 Jul 09 - 09:38 AM What do you make of this? Wendy Arrowsmith & The Young 'uns: Sleep Well |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: greg stephens Date: 31 Jul 09 - 03:05 PM GUEST says that people who mis-pronounce Reee-O as Rye-o must have got this from print. English speakers habitually pronounce all sorts of foregn names differently from the natives: eg Paris Munich Florence and Venice. Likewise the French call London Londres, etc etc. Nothing odd about that. You can't deduce anything much about printed v oral sources from this. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: greg stephens Date: 31 Jul 09 - 03:07 PM PS: if GUEST is a member of the Young'Uns cannily keeping this thread simmering on: nice one! |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 01 Aug 09 - 04:29 AM Actually, Greg, it was me - forgot to attach my moniker! The 'ree-oh' vs 'rye-oh' thing just reminded me of Harry Cox. Years ago a collector recorded Harry singing 'Van Diemen's Land'. He noted that in the line where the poachers are sent to 'Warwick Gaol', Harry pronounced 'Warwick' as 'Wore-wick' rather than 'Worrick'. He surmised that Harry must have got the text of the song from print - and it subsequently turned out that he had a drawer full of broadsides, including 'Van D's Land'. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: The Sandman Date: 01 Aug 09 - 02:26 PM Banjiman, the song and singing is good, but thats mainly due to Wendy Arrowsmith, the choruses are good too,but in fairness the Young uns contribution is relatively small.Dick Miles |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Alio Date: 02 Aug 09 - 11:34 AM But they're getting out there - and they are putting bums on seats. I've a nasty feeling that if they're not booked at Saddleworth again next year, there could be insurrection! It may sound stupid, but when they sing, there's a certain magic quality about it! Maybe it's their age, the power in their combined voices, their superb harmonies, their funny stories, their obvious close friendship - whatever it is, they're doing it right for me! Ali x |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Vin2 Date: 03 Aug 09 - 08:35 AM I'll second that Ali. I reckon tis a combination of all you've said that makes them so ejoyable and their own arrangements/presentation of some great songs note their brilliantly funny 'Yeller Gals' (or Doodle let Me Go'), great stuff! Must have em back next year or i shall insurrect with the rest of em! |

Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST,Bob Date: 03 Aug 09 - 11:33 AM I know your doing your best for these young lads, but its the same dozen or so people each time. I can't see what all the fuss is about myself with this group. But saying that they are part of a new surge of young, some very talented singers and musicians which thankfully are helping to keep this music alive |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: The Sandman Date: 03 Aug 09 - 12:24 PM then we have the not so young uns like the Wilson Family, who[imo] are excellent. young people do need to be encouraged, but then so do all good performers regardless of their age. I would like to thank all the people who have kept this music and the folk club/festival circuit alive over the last 35 to 50 years, plus all the people who sing these songs purely for enjoyment. one of the dangers of professionalism,is that when people HAVE to sing for a living the joy of singing/playing can periodically/occasionaly be replaced by the mechanical . for example in todays instrumental music technical ability has risen to a very high standard, but I find I often enjoy recordings like Paddy in the Smoke more than some of the more recent Irish recordings ,WHY? should this be,it is becasue the love of playing for the sake of it,shines through I think it was because those musicians were living and working all through the week, and really looked forward to playing saturday night and sundays, and it shows in their playing. apologies for the thread drift[which has nothing to do with the Young uns as performers] |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: GUEST Date: 03 Aug 09 - 01:56 PM "can't see what the fuss is about" Bob, you are talking rubbish. These lads are talented, modest, enthusiastic and keeping the tradition alive both in the UK and abroad. Thats worth nurturing and 'fussing about' in my book. These lads have a huge following here and in Europe so clearly your in the minority. |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: BB Date: 03 Aug 09 - 04:45 PM I could bring in a load of cliches here, but 'meat' and 'poison' comes immediately to mind. Everyone's entitled to their own (wrong) opinion... Barbara |
Subject: RE: The Young Un's From: Pistachio Date: 03 Aug 09 - 06:41 PM Hear them and see them - then make up your own mind. I first heard the lads at Beverley Beck Festival, May Bank holiday 2008 and was amazed at the sound they produced - exceptional harmonies and such happy lads, not pushing any agenda, simply enjoying the singing and giving their audience a memorable performance. It seems they continue to do so everywhere. Saddleworth was MAGICAL. Hazel. |
