OK, Greg Stephens just told me about these lads, in the 'Young Folk' thread....and...my ears have gone UP!    You know, like they did when I first heard Seth Lakeman..

Just WOW!

Soooo....here they are, richly deserving a thread of their very own, because these lads are going to filling marquees all over the country, you just watch 'em.

In my opinion, the Young Un's have good folk voices - Seth Lakeman has a good pop voice, with which he sings self-penned, local, traditional stories.

Ok, the young'uns , Sean, Michael and David , great voices, great company and I like to think we are friends although the last time I was with them they said "spot the middle class folk singer", I think it was humour. They are really, really good and not only that what you see and hear is what you get, totally unpretentious gems, good to know that the future is in their hands. So, to any folk club hirers they will blow you all away with their refreshing youthful interpretation of the traditional genre which draws so heavily on the Wilson/Waterson that it will not be unrecognisable but has a vim and vigour that reflects their youth, am I jealoous? Well maybe to have my time again and sing with these three very talented lads

I look forward to performing with them again.
We were paired up for sets at Scarborough Seafest because I was w/o my band and they were w/o their frontman Sean. This will not be completely obvious for those of you with fliers, because Richard Grainger was in the grips of some sort of capricious joke and listed them (even introduced them to me) as "Pirate John". They were so polite that they didn't tell me of his prank until I had already introduced them as that 2 or 3 times (trying to plug the local boys). This frustration led to the name of the first CD "To Hell With Pirate John".

I'm glad to have a part in that now . ;)
They were great fun and quite supportive. I appreciated Mike's head full of music student theory and know how, and David's Rustic humor and voice. As an American, I didn't know that anyone in England really had a voice like his , let alone anyone under 45!

I must write and bug them and not just prattle on here, but I saw folks talking, and I thought I had 2 cents to lend. . .

They went down a treat on their 2nd visit to South Shields last night.

Thought they were good last year but last night they just excelled.

Not only a great night of singing but great crack, great voices and their hearts are in the tradition.

They finished the first half with a medley of Shanties dedicated to Johnny Collins. A fitting tribute to Johnny who gave us a rousing gig exactly 1 year ago to the night.

Top Job lads !

Well, I already have them on my Myspace page..front page..and their music playing there too...and they're on my Facebook and Youtube page as well, and this thread..and..and...

It doesn't take long to spread the word out, if enough people do that together...

Yeah they are known by a lot of people and people have been talking about them but why are they not headlining more festivals?? They have the all round package - better entertainment and more enjoyable than some of the so called 'bigger' groups. And why are they not being played on Mike Harding's BBC show?

Because they haven't 1/ employed a plugger 2/ They have self released their CDs (rather than on a record label 3/ They don't have an agent......

i.e They haven't joined the industry in the same way that most artists that get played on Mike Harding and get booked as festival headliners have.

The question is though can you make it BIG without playing the industry games and having someone's money behind you?

In the cottage industry that most of us are part of it's hard to break through.

I have booked them twice at KFFC and I will be doing so again. Not that this will make that much difference to their careers!

Can someone put a thread about them on the BBC for me, please. I'd do it, but there's no point, as it'll be removed. But if you could all spread the word over there, get those who support them in here to go over to the BBC Folk & Acoustic Board...and on to fRoots as well, er...I can't post there either.

If you want these guys to 'break through', then all of YOU have to be their agents, and get talking about them all over the internet, send their Myspace page around....

And could someone please get them to put more information about themselves on their Myspace page. That page doesn't tell people enough about them, and it's their Shop Window to the World, far more so than their main site will ever be. The World uses Myspace and Youtube to send music around the place.

I'm listening to their Podcast at the moment, which is on their Myspace page. (see link to that in my first post)

Honestly, these lads should be out there, beyond the folk world too, as someone's said above, because they have immense talent.

People new to The Young Un's assume that because they haven't heard of them before, they must be new to folk.

Nothing is further from the truth. Here in the North-East we have watched them learn their craft over many years.

Living just down the road from the The Wilson Family it is easy to see how their particular style developed and, of course, being much younger than the Wilson's (who have either reached or are approaching middle age) their name was a natural description of who they were and who they were following.

Believe me, if the lads wanted to make 'it big' they have all the skills and the contacts they need,

I'm just thankful that we have a new generation coming through who love the genre as much as I do.

Don't forget they are at Saddleworth Festival this weekend.

Well, after hearing what i have heard being said by a southern folk club to a not such well known prospective performer in their neck of the woods, but mightily well repected in his own back yard, then it is hardly surprises me that the Young'uns stay up North "where it's vibrant and dynamic". Not every performer puts bums on seats but that shouldn't always be the criteria for selecting an act. Well I shall not rabbit on about inbreeding but introducing something different freshens up the bloodline!

I first saw them at Dave Howden's 60th birthday party - sorry to give your age away Dave! I thought they were brilliant, and suggested them to the committee at the nest meeting.

As Youngfolkie and Pistachio said, the atmosphere was electric in the Civic Hall in Saddleworth last Saturday. I was MCing, and the sound guy and I had decided that we were going to run a tight ship sound-wise. But if I hadn't given them an encore I think I'd have been lynched!

Can't wait to see them again - hopefully back in Saddleworth next year (along with Hissyfit) - if I can get my own way!

Haven't read all these messages in detail, but I don't think anyone has mentioned their new CD? They gave me 1 at the weekend, and as expected, it's brilliant, and really conjures them up. They could have been in my lounge!

It's called Plastic Cod'eads, and was produced late 2008. Presumably it's available via their website. I recommend it.

The album Plastic Cod'eads is terrific and it features Sean's finest songs to date like "Sancta Bega" and "Jenny Waits For Me". Available from their online shop - recommended. One of the best folk albums I've heard. Great.

Stallion, do you really think this only happens in Southern folk clubs? If so, wake up! It happens all over, and will continue to happen until organisers are prepared to get out there and listen to new people, and then book on the strength of ability, rather than just a 'big name' or because someone comes cheap, so that their audiences will learn to trust them to always book something good, whether they've heard of them or not. It used to happen, once upon a time, but it seems rarely these days.

How do you go through life believing that the 'Rio' in 'Rio Grande' is pronounced 'rye-oh' rather than 'ree-oh'? This may be nitpicking to some - to me it's about credibility.

No BB but a 5 hour trip down South isn't worth it if your only going to sing a couple of songs and the same goes for the trip up North, but I do question that particular persons judgement. As I said I agree that it is nationwide problem but the Young'uns live up North. The exact quote from the southern club was or as near as damit was "I am sick and tired of people who think they can sing sending me cd's and asking for a gig", a simple thanks but we are fully booked would have done, any way for my money they were the stand out stars of the last festival I was at, with refreshingly new material to our ears and scholarship to boot!

Yeah, right! Well I've never heard anyone pronounce 'Rio' as 'rye-oh'- until I played that clip. My personal opinion is that anyone who thinks that the Spanish word 'Rio' (meaning 'river') is pronounced 'rye-oh' must be studying for a certificate in advanced wazzockery!

Rio, Rye-oh, tomato or tomarrrrto, depends p'raps on where you're from, your accent etc. Whilst it's usually written as Rio, I've often heard both pronunciations o'er t'years. Sounds grand to me whichever way.

My recollection is that Stan Hugill said he had heard people pronounce it both ways, but I might be quite wrong. My own impression is that saying Rye-O gives a faint whiff of schoolmasterly snobbishness, a sort of "Hey, I've researched this and I know this is how the old-timers sung it". It may be fine for the aficioados, buit I think Ree-O is more user friendly singing to Joe Public.

But to return to the thread topic, the Young'Uns are terrific. I was so impressed by them on first hearing that I made the very strongest recommendation to Shrewsbury Folk Festival that they should be booked. My advice, alas, is not much valued in folk circles. I fear the group may well become the Old'Uns before the generality of the folk mainstream get round to taking an interest.

Well, looking at their gig list on their web pages, i think they're doing pretty well so far both over here and gigs abroad like Germany and on the dates of the Shrewsbury festival (where i shall be) they're in Holland. Not bad for a young crew!

I can only assume that Mr Hughill's informants must have got that particular shanty from print (otherwise they would have pronounced it 'Ree-oh', as it is pronounced by native Spanish speakers) - which raises some interesting questions!

GUEST says that people who mis-pronounce Reee-O as Rye-o must have got this from print. English speakers habitually pronounce all sorts of foregn names differently from the natives: eg Paris Munich Florence and Venice. Likewise the French call London Londres, etc etc. Nothing odd about that. You can't deduce anything much about printed v oral sources from this.

Actually, Greg, it was me - forgot to attach my moniker!

The 'ree-oh' vs 'rye-oh' thing just reminded me of Harry Cox. Years ago a collector recorded Harry singing 'Van Diemen's Land'. He noted that in the line where the poachers are sent to 'Warwick Gaol', Harry pronounced 'Warwick' as 'Wore-wick' rather than 'Worrick'. He surmised that Harry must have got the text of the song from print - and it subsequently turned out that he had a drawer full of broadsides, including 'Van D's Land'.

It may sound stupid, but when they sing, there's a certain magic quality about it! Maybe it's their age, the power in their combined voices, their superb harmonies, their funny stories, their obvious close friendship - whatever it is, they're doing it right for me!

I'll second that Ali. I reckon tis a combination of all you've said that makes them so ejoyable and their own arrangements/presentation of some great songs note their brilliantly funny 'Yeller Gals' (or Doodle let Me Go'), great stuff!

Must have em back next year or i shall insurrect with the rest of em!

I know your doing your best for these young lads, but its the same dozen or so people each time. I can't see what all the fuss is about myself with this group. But saying that they are part of a new surge of young, some very talented singers and musicians which thankfully are helping to keep this music alive

then we have the not so young uns like the Wilson Family,who[imo] are excellent.
young people do need to be encouraged,but then so do all good performers regardless of their age.
I would like to thank all the people who have kept this music and the folk club/festival circuit alive over the last 35 to 50 years,plus all the people who sing these songs purely for enjoyment.
one of the dangers of professionalism,is that when people HAVE to sing for a living the joy of singing/playing can periodically/occasionaly be replaced by the mechanical .
for example in todays instrumental music technical ability has risen to a very high standard,but I find I often enjoy recordings like Paddy in the Smoke more than some of the more recent Irish recordings ,WHY? should this be,it is becasue the love of playing for the sake of it,shines through
I think it was because those musicians were living and working all through the week,and really looked forward to playing saturday night and sundays,and it shows in their playing.

Bob, you are talking rubbish. These lads are talented, modest, enthusiastic and keeping the tradition alive both in the UK and abroad. Thats worth nurturing and 'fussing about' in my book. These lads have a huge following here and in Europe so clearly your in the minority.

Hear them and see them - then make up your own mind.

I first heard the lads at Beverley Beck Festival, May Bank holiday 2008 and was amazed at the sound they produced - exceptional harmonies and such happy lads, not pushing any agenda, simply enjoying the singing and giving their audience a memorable performance. It seems they continue to do so everywhere.
Saddleworth was MAGICAL.
