Hello!

I know of this great little tune but I dont know its actual name nor its meaning in old scots!

I only know of it phonetically.

here is the chorus:

sow na neela, neela, neela
sow na neela rooke-a me
sow na neela, neela, neela
sow na neela vour-ach

any help or knowledge of this tune would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!

Sounds like a bit of mouth music. I'm quite sure I've heard it; Robin Hall & Jimmie MacGregor?

It's not in Scots, it's in Gaelic, it's a bit of Puirt a beul (mouth music) called 'Sann an Eile, and I've got it sung by Joan MacRae of Brora in Sutherland on Lp, but as far as I knoiw I don't have it written down.

Didn't I hear something like that as they piped in the haggis at the last St. Andrew's Day caber tossing and hernia festival?

I think this is it, and do try to hear the Sileas recording referred to at the bottom of the page.

There's also a Norman Kennedy on Topic 12T178 with another verse. I don't know if it's been made available on CD.

From: Jim Dixon

Copied from http://www.celticlyricscorner.net/puirt/sann.htm

'SANN AN ILE

'Sann an Ile, Ile, Ile
'Sann an Ile rugadh mi
'Sann an Ile, Ile, Ile
'Sann an Ile, bhòidheach
'Sann an Ile, Ile, Ile
'Sann an Ile rugadh mi
'Sann an Ile, Ile, Ile
'Sann an Ile, bhòidheach

'Sann an Ile ghorm an fheòir
A rugadh mi's a thogadh mi
'Sann an Ile ghorm an fheòir
A rugadh mi 'sa bha mi
'Sann an Ile ghorm an fheòir
A rugadh mi's a thogadh mi
'Sann an Ile ghorm an fheòir
A rugadh mi 'sa bha mi

Nuair a bha mi ann an Ile
Bha Catriona cuide rium
Nuair a bha mi ann an Ile
Bha Catriona lamh rium
Nuair a bha mi ann an Ile
Bha Catriona cuide rium
Nuair a bha mi ann an Ile
Bha Catriona lamh rium
IT'S IN ISLAY

It's in Islay, Islay, Islay
It's in Islay that I was born
It's in Islay, Islay, Islay
It's in beautiful Islay
It's in Islay, Islay, Islay
It's in Islay that I was born
It's in Islay, Islay, Islay
It's in beautiful Islay

It's in green Islay of the grass
That I was born and raised
It's in green Islay of the grass
That I was born, that I was
It's in green Islay of the grass
That I was born and raised
It's in green Islay of the grass
That I was born, that I was

When I was in Islay
Catriona was with me
When I was in Islay
Catriona was by my side
When I was in Islay
Catriona was with me
When I was in Islay
Catriona was by my side
