From: Rabbi-Sol
Date: 09 Jul 09 - 07:20 PM

On Sunday August 30th between the hours of 12 Noon and 7 PM, The Borderline Folk Music Club will host its first annual Picnic, & Singing Party at the outdoor picnic area in the rear of the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps Building located at 200 - Congers Road, New City (Rockland County), NY 10952.

Admission is free. Bring your lawn chairs, your instruments, your voices, and a pot luck lunch dish to share with 6 people. We will provide the soft drinks, paper goods, & plastic utensils. If you are too shy to play or sing you can request a song and one of the many performers who will be present will be more than happy to do it for you.

Being that Jean Ritchie & George Pickow have decided not to host their party this year, we at The Borderline have decided to continue this all important annual event and not let the tradition pass into oblivion.

This convenient location is less than an hour from Manhattan via the Palisades Parkway (Exit 11). For those coming by public transportation, the Coach USA Red & Tan Lines bus from Port Authority stops at our front door. There is plenty of free parking on premises and good clean rest room facilities. In the event of rain we will move the event indoors.

As an added bonus we will have a table set up where the musicians can display and sell their CDs.

For additional information e-mail to solz1@optonline.net or call me at (845)354-4586.

We just got the official word. The Pinewoods Folk Music Society Of New York will be co-sponsoring this event with us. Therefore this will now become the official successor to the Jean Ritchie annual singing party which we all eagerly looked forward to attending each year.

Sounds like fun and having been there for the Mystic fundraiser last spring the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps Building should work well for this gathering.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The event is now up on our website where you can view the flyer.
www.borderlinefolkmusic.4themax.com

This should be even bigger than the Mystic fundraiser.

Why? First of all it is FREE.

Secondly, Pinewoods is co-sponsoring it with us.

Thirdly, Members of the Walkabout Clearwater Coffeehouse, Lil Appel's group & The Hudson Valley Folk Guild sent it out to their mailing lists as well.

We expect a huge turnout of musicians as well as folk and bluegrass fans.

Among the musicians who have already committed themselves are:

Sarah Donner

Amy Campbell

Jude Roberts

Maggie Seligman

Laibel (Ben Moshe) Blu

Todd Guidice

These folks are in addition to the Pinewoods regulars whom I am sure will turn out in force.

Perform? I thought this was an anybody/everybody sing informal picnic?

It is an INFORMAL everybody sing picnic, just like it always was at Jean Ritchie's house, with the exception that we are allowing any performers who are present to exhibit and sell CDs. I just want to make sure that everybody who wants to sing (including you, Susan), gets the opportunity to do so. Some singers from out of town will be passing through on their way to other gigs that evening and I want to make sure that they get heard before they have to leave. It helps for me to know who is present since I do not recognize many of the newer performers. That is why I am requesting the e-mail.

Did Jean have a mechandise table at her parties?

No Ron. Jean did not have a merchandise table at her parties. Folks who wanted to buy CDs had to accompany the musicians to their cars that were parked out on the street. That was probably due to lack of space. We have more than double the space than Jean had and therefore we feel that we should make it easier for both, the musicians and the folks who want to buy their CDs by allowing them to exhibit on site.

Best of luck with the event. I would attend myself, but the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club is sponsoring a bus trip to the Museum at Bethel, NY (site of the original Woodstock festival) that same day. (We still have a couple of seats available if anyone is interested!)

It sounds like your event has a different slant from the informal parties that Jean used to run, and I wish you all the success and hope the afternoon is filled with opportunites for everyone to enjoy singing. Events like Jean's parties as well as other events sponsored by the Folk Music Society of New York (formerly Pinewoods) have always been to encourage people to sing, not to show off talents of performers. Music should be a participation, not just an exhibition!

Ron. I repeat it is NOT an exhibition. EVERYONE present is invited to sing and participate. Even at Jean's parties 70% of the participants were performers in one way or the other and the other 30% wanted to be. There will be no formal structure to this event. It is for everyone to enjoy.

Sounds great! I think you confused people by mentioning the merchandise table and the "performers" in your earlier posts.

Anne Price will be joining us for the afternoon.

Heather Wood has agreed to be the master of ceremonies just like she did every year when the picnic was at Jean Ritchie's.

That is correct Susan. Rain or Shine. If it rains we will be indoors.

I just listened to WCBS news and weatherman Todd Glickman predicted a beautiful day for tomorrow (Sunday).

So we are definitely setting up outside.

See you all tomorrow.

What a great time we all had at The Borderline Picnic & Singing Party this afternoon. There was 6 hours of non-stop folk music with over 120 people in attendance. The weather was perfect. The food was plentiful. The music was fantastic and the comraderie between performers and audience was truly an experience to behold. I am totally exhausted from all the day's activities but the efforts were truly rewarding.

I think that the important theme of this whole event was that we brought people together. I am not only referring to people from different geographic regions such as NYC, the Hudson Valley, Connecticut, Long Island, & New Jersey. I am referring to the fact that we had performers of all ages, both young, old and in between all assembled for the purpose of performing folk music. We had the older generation personified by Lori Holland, Roger Sprung, Dick Greenhaus, & John Sarna, the middle agers such as Steve Suffet, Anne Price, Heather Wood, & Louise Luger, and the younger generation represented by Arlon Bennett, Jude Roberts, Amy Campbell, Sarah Donner, Mara Levine, & Loretta Hagen. This insures the continuity of folk music as the torch is being passed to the younger generation.
The negative side of the equation which must be addressed somehow is that we failed to attract a younger audience. If we want to insure the continuity of the folk process we must somehow get the younger generation involved, whether it be through the schools or in some other manner.

I would like to thank all the folks from Pinewoods who cosponsored this event with us and particularly to Heather Wood for serving as the emcee. I don't think that she got a chance to sit down all day.
True dedication to the cause which we really appreciate.
