Subject: Flash Company & The Duncan McFarlane Band
From: Lizzie Cornish 1
Date: 10 Jul 09 - 05:21 AM

I found this whilst looking for some of Duncan's (McFarlane) music on Youtube and thought some of you may enjoy it...

Flash Company dancing to 'Duncan's Dance'

Duncan McFarlane Band - Myspace

Flash Company - Myspace

And here they are again, dancing not only with their clothes on, but dancing to the Blues, as well as some Blondie! :0)

Blondie & Blues - A different kind of Morris! :0)

I remember sitting at the first ever Sidmouth Folk Week, watching Duncan and his band take the stage in The Ham Marquee that final evening. I already had their fabulous CD 'The Woodshed Boys' so when Duncan introduced 'Twohey Step' I knew what was coming! :0)

The version he plays, both on the CD and on that night in Sidmouth are far more rock 'n' roll folk than the one on that first video....

The great thing is it starts off sooooo quiet, a bouncy little jig, and then, just as the audience is settling into tapping their feet gently, fingers going on thighs, Duncan and his band blast the roof off and this powerful tune rockets through the air!

Whoa!!

Oh, it made me smile, because some of that audience were taken completely by surprise..I LOVED IT!

I also think, listening to this track again, as I am now, listening to all the songs on here, that Duncan and his Band should be headlining at ALL the major festivals in this country because they are sensational!

I saw them play live at Otley Folk Festival, on their home turf, and there wasn't room to squeeze a sardine in that night! Even the stewards gave up as the room filled and folks were jigging up and down. It was the most lively and entertaining evening I've EVER had.

Duncan and his Band - Main site

For those who've never seen them, they do folk rock, and acoustic and when I saw them later at Otley, it was upstairs in a pub, around 50 people in that room, and they did their acoustic set...Again, absolutely wonderful memories of a superb afternoon.

And then, of course, there's Duncan as a solo artist...and he's one of the few people that Diane and I are in complete unison about, in our thoughts on his music. Brilliant!

MIKE HARDING, ARE YOU LISTENING?????

:0)

Oops, I renamed this thread 'Flash Company & The Duncan McFarlane Band' but it hasn't come up on the title.

Is there any way a kindly Mudelf could change it for me, please? Many thanks.

Diane and I are in complete unison

Piss off, seagull.
You haven't the faintest idea how I assess anyone musically.
Furthermore, Mr McFarlane would be mightily relieved if you were to refrain from fawning over him in such a disgustingly sycophantic manner.

Oh, hello Sweetums, nice to hear from you. :0)

Actually, you said, back on the BBC board, how much you admired Duncan's interpretation of traditional songs, which warmed my heart a great deal, because I too know that he, and his band, are all excellent at what they do.

Hope you're keeping well.
Lizzie

"Piss off, seagull."

Actually, funny you should say that, because that night in The Ham, the seagulls themselves did exactly that, and I wrote about it on the BBC, as they flew off the roof, probably to quiet little Budleigh Salterton, such was the pounding vibes from Duncan's Band that night. My goodness, but they went down a storm!

Duncan is very good of course - Really enjoyed a session up in the Yorkshire Dales a couple of years ago. Are we just selecting our random favourite Morris clips? Flash Company are great of course but surely that first one is more akin to a practice session than a display and, as they say, they have slowed it down anyway. How about seeing some real live spectacle like The Rumworth Morris of Bolton. Or, maybe if Border is more your bag then how about The Ironmen and Severn Gilders dancing three jolly sheepskins (or as we used to announce it - four jolly threeskins - try that when you are pissed!)

Have fun but if you realy believe that a dance is the best fun you have ever had then you really ought to stay in more;-)

"Are we just selecting our random favourite Morris clips? "

Feel free, by all means, David...and anyone else who'd like to do that. I did actually rethink the title and included Duncan's name in it, but it hasn't come up on the board...

So yes, Morris dance videos, appreciation of Duncan McFarlane, all are welcome.

"Flash Company are great of course but surely that first one is more akin to a practice session than a display..."

Oh yes, I realised that, just thought it was a nice video with great music, that's all. :0)

Just been reminded where in Yorkshire I saw Duncan and band - It was at the Hardraw gathering where they are appearing again this year! I'm off-shift until the Sunday so may even be able to get along again:-)

The bandstand - That was it! Was you on there 2 or 3 years back? Wonderful accoustics but I was a bit worried about you bringing some loose rocks down! :-)
