Subject: RE: Fantasy CD sale - folk blues jazz From: Art Thieme Date: 10 Jul 09 - 11:21 PM Tons of great things were on the many labels Fantasy bought and controlled. Bob Gibson. Thelonious Monk. Scrapper Blackwell's solo LP on Prestige. At least 20 Chet Baker LPs issued on CDs from Riverside -- and from Fantasy itself. Kicking Mule was theirs,---but the whole label was sold by Fantasy to someone else fairly recently I've been told. That sale went down before they had issued most of those recordings. My own two LPs on K.M. were not re-issued on CDs by Fantasy. But this is a great chance for some of you who have the cash. Absolutely wonderful stuff is included. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Fantasy CD sale - folk blues jazz From: Thomas Stern Date: 11 Jul 09 - 12:18 PM I've copied (below) a post from the ARSC list - interesting comments on the state of the USA 'music industry', and sad that these important traditional music recordings become harder to find. Ironically, much American traditional music continues to be made available in lovingly produced annotated and illustrated editions from Japan, the UK, Germany, and Europe. Best wishes, Thomas. There is a lot of interesting stuff from the Concord Music Group up there, cheeeep. It's bittersweet, though. These guys are obviously in very hard times, having essentially shut down Telarc and, to my knowledge, making very few new recordings. Now they are cleaning out their inventory pipeline, including stuff like Keepnews Edition remasters from this decade. Their own online store sold out of most of their SACD inventory a while back, after steeply discounting it. This is sad. These guys amassed a very large collection of American recording history (a bunch of good, small jazz labels -- Prestige, Riverside, Pablo, Concord, Fantasy -- and Telarc, plus the Stax/Volt material not owned by Warner Music Group). It would be very sad to see all this history go into bankruptcy limbo. Remember when Sugar Hill Records went under and the Chess catalog was out of print and in limbo until MCA bought it? Bottom line is, $4.98 a disc is getting near the price it costs to manufacture and inventory the thing, so there's little or no profit in this clearance sale except for oldies.com, which is obviously getting enough percent per disc to justify moving the merchandise through its shipping operations. -- Tom Fine |
Subject: RE: Fantasy CD sale - folk blues jazz From: Art Thieme Date: 11 Jul 09 - 06:05 PM I will be listening to the music I have now for a very long time---or until I have no more of that item left to me. TIME I mean! As I inferred, there is no cash left to take chances ordering any CDs--no matter how inexpensive. The conniving banking robber barons in the USA have conspired to impoverish millions of it's citizens. |

Subject: RE: Fantasy CD sale - folk blues jazz From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 11 Jul 09 - 09:53 PM Thanks for the heads up. I just bought 8 CDs... half of them as Christmas presents. That said, I'm kinda with Art on this one. I'm shedding CDs and DVDs and a ton of other stuff I've received great enjoyment from. I think it's a natural progression as you get older. I don't see it as letting go. I see it as clearing the decks for a new beginning. Not getting rid of everything, though. Jerry |
