Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Paul_Schurr_PSG_NY Date: 23 Jul 09 - 03:08 PM My thank yous to Tom, Linn, and the Press Room regulars who keep the Press Room a friendly and interesting place to sing. Charlene and I had a great time! Charlene returned home and started learning new songs. She almost has "Luckiest Sailor" (Linda Kelley, Hull, UK) memorized. Also, I've been hearing "Isn't It Grand?" off and on all day for several days. Is she trying to tell me something? Paul |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Jul 09 - 08:29 PM Peadar- Glad to hear that you and your band members survived. Did you sing any chicken-plucking songs? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: GUEST,Peadar (formerly) of Portsmouth Date: 21 Jul 09 - 12:57 PM Surprisingly, that bachelor party was nothing compared to volume levels offered by the bachelorette parties that show up at our regular Saturday gig. Who would have thought hens were louder than stags? |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Jul 09 - 10:59 AM It was a fine session, and we were successful in positively engaging the bachelor party in some of the drinking songs. But they certainly got noisy at times; it even drown out most of the kitchen sounds! I led "Whisky-o," "Ballad of the Old Navy (BFJ)," "By the Old Pagoda Anchorage (CFS)," "West Indies Blues," "Mobile Bay (CFS)," "Sea Traders (BFJ)", and "The Outside Track (Henry Lawson)." CFS is Cicely Fox Smith and BFJ is Burt Franklin Jenness JudyB led "A Parting (CFS)." Peadar certainly showed his strength in singing above the air conditioner and the bachelor party, as did Chris and Paul. That level of singing certainly can be challenging and I'm not certain if my delicate vocal chords will ever recover! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Jul 09 - 09:07 PM What a lovely session! A lot of regulars had gigs today or were off at Apple Hollow or whatever, but it was a really good session. Thanks to the regulars who were there, plus the ones who stopped in before heading off to other engagements (such as Chance & Suzette being at Sinsull's lobster boil), and the occasionals from Albany, NY and Boston, MA. Thanks, too, to Joyce Cockerham, who made it to Portsmouth for the first time (and her wonderful song about Captain Sullenberger). A large (approx. 15) and loud crowd showed up mid-session for a stag party, but we not only coped, but entertained them well (with special thanks to Pete Hale, Paul Schurr and Annabelle Graetz). I kicked off the session with Jerry Bryant's "Shanty In Old Shanty Town" and also sang "Nine Times a Night," "Cannery Shed," "Astoria's Bar," ""Madame Gashay's," "Sandgate Girl's Lament," and Robert Burns' "Nine Inch Will Please a Lady." Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Jul 09 - 10:28 AM Looks to be a lively session even without some of the regulars. See you there! Linn |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Paul_Schurr_PSG_NY Date: 17 Jul 09 - 10:41 AM Joyce Cockerham from the Pickin' and Singin' Gatherin' folk club will be joining us on Saturday at the Press room. She leads songs with enthusiasm and joy. Ok, I know what I said about newbies, but I rave about the Press Room sings and can't resist inviting the PSGers. |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Paul_Schurr_PSG_NY Date: 16 Jul 09 - 07:43 PM We're good to go from Albany, NY. Charlene and I will be there both Friday and Saturday. Greg won't make it, he sends his regrets, but I can tell you that more than anything else Greg and I are afraid of changing the Press Room sings by letting too many newbies know about it. What a treasure! See you soon! |

Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Jul 09 - 10:14 PM I'm back in. The rain that's scheduled on Saturday makes recording in our barn too rhythmic. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: GUEST,Peadar (formerly) of Portsmouth Date: 15 Jul 09 - 06:40 PM I'll be there, but likely not arriving until 5-ish. Looking forward to a good day. peter |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: ranger1 Date: 14 Jul 09 - 09:28 PM Sigh. Too early in the day for me, I'm afraid. Have I mentioned before that this working for a living thing is rubbish? I'll barely make SINSULL's thing while there is still food. Although I'll skip the lobsters... |

Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: jacqui.c Date: 13 Jul 09 - 08:13 AM Lobster lust has claimed this Maineiac, I'm afraid. Too many good things happening all at once! |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Jul 09 - 07:53 PM Unfortunately Judy and I are committed to working with Roll & Go for a practice recording session for the new CD. We have to figure out how well the lower barn at Robinhood Farm will work for our planned recording session in August. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: Barry Finn Date: 12 Jul 09 - 06:18 PM Ill be there early but then I'm headinng north for the "lobsta lust" Barry |
Subject: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room(NH) From: curmudgeon Date: 12 Jul 09 - 03:52 PM The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session will take place at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH this Saturday, 18 July from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. We could really use some new blood as, while my voice is on the mend, it's unlikely to be in working order that soon. Some of the regulars have a gig that day, Jeri's going to Apple Hollow, and still others are being lured away by lobster lust. See you Saturday? |
