Subject: The Incredible Vocapeople From: Amos Date: 12 Jul 09 - 10:01 PM They're bloody amazing, is what. Not since the Swingle Singers have I seen such talent unleashed in a purely vocal medium. A |

Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: M.Ted Date: 13 Jul 09 - 12:59 AM You've apparently missed Take 6--ten grammies--and this clip is live, not a lip-synced music video-- |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: VirginiaTam Date: 13 Jul 09 - 03:06 AM Ok I so love both clips. Voca People for pure fun and Take 6 because they make my spine tingle. Thanks both for posting them. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: Jack Blandiver Date: 13 Jul 09 - 05:03 AM Can I just say how awful I found the Voca People? In fact, I'd say this is quite probably the worst music I've ever heard in my life. Take-6 - hmmm - a little too slick. I'm a big early Ink Spots / Mills Brothers fan in this respect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14QEoEIvUuk. Hardly the most enlightened depiction of African-American culture around I grant you, but the music is truly transcendent! |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: M.Ted Date: 13 Jul 09 - 07:32 AM I'd never say a mumblin' word about either the Mills Brothers or The Ink Spots. If you like it a little less slick, maybe this is more your styleThere's A Leak in this Old Building |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: jeddy Date: 13 Jul 09 - 07:44 AM take 6 was a little too jazzy for me but this shows what an excelent intrument the human vioce can really be. the beginning isn't impressive but keep with it as he gets better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rab_GN6iAD8&feature=fvw i am very impressed. take care all jade x x x x |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: Jack Blandiver Date: 13 Jul 09 - 07:45 AM I was looking for something else but I found this instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9w6DJpDBs8 |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: M.Ted Date: 13 Jul 09 - 07:54 AM Incidentally, I do love that video of "Caravan" . I remember hearing one of the brothers(Harry, I think) saying that people would come to hear them thinking that those really were horns-- Here's one of my favorite of their numbers Til Then |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: M.Ted Date: 13 Jul 09 - 10:37 AM Incidentally, "The Voca People" is a performance piece--of the "Blue Man Group" ilk. From the website: The Voca People is a new international vocal theater performance that combines amazing vocal sounds and an acapella singing with the art of modern beat-box which imitates the sounds of drums, trumpets, guitars and other instruments and musical effects without using any musical instrument on stage, performed in a humoristic way and with audience participation. Who are The Voca People? The Voca people are 8 friendly aliens from the planet Voca, a musical planet that has no verbal communication but use vocal expressions only. They have heard the music from earth for decades now and with their imitation abilities they have decided to pay a one evening tribute to humanity and to perform the songs they love as musical- gratitude. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: Artful Codger Date: 13 Jul 09 - 04:16 PM They're pretty good--the arrangements are impressive and they're tight, clean and on pitch--, but the singing (particularly in the solos) seems a bit mechanical--glitz without real soul. The presentation detracts from their talent: it made me think "Blue Man Group meets Mexican Wrestling Federation". The "moon walk" was a glaringly bad choice. The five (now six?) guys in Rockapella still blow these folks away, and VocaPeople can only dream of touching Take 6 (in their a cappella days) in terms of quality. Nevertheless, a good sampler. If they get better guidance and drop their silly presentation concept, they might develop into a sort of Swingle Singers for the modern day. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: M.Ted Date: 13 Jul 09 - 07:55 PM It's a performance piece, AC, a bit of musical theater--meaning that it was written, arranged, and choreographed and then the performers learned it from a director, musical director, and choreographer, respectively--don't know if the performers played a part in creating the piece or not, but, as with Blue Man Group, other companies can present the piece, as propriety demands. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: Artful Codger Date: 13 Jul 09 - 08:53 PM In that case, what a waste of singing talent and sharp arranging. The staging and costumes are laughable, and not in a good way. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: alanabit Date: 14 Jul 09 - 04:01 AM It is not my favourite type of performance either, but I think you have to see it for what it is. It is modern performance art/theatre. In a theatre it would probably knock me out. It is also of exceptionally high calibre and shows painstaking discipline and preparation, let alone fine musicianship. Thanks to everyone who posted links. The Mills Brothers and Take Six were wonderful. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 14 Jul 09 - 04:26 AM For 'only vocals', one solitary beatboxer can be far more impressive IMO. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: GUEST,a cappella fan Date: 14 Jul 09 - 08:18 AM They're pretty good. Although the Swingle Singers ARE far better! They have just released a new album Ferris Wheels which is just magical. At the moment its only available on their website or at their gigs but they'll be launching it in october! Its sad that people think of the Swingle Singers as so old fashioned. They are constantly updating their look, image and style and are more current and relevant than all other groups out there. They pave the way! Check out their website www.swinglesingers.com and see for yourselves! x |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: Jack Blandiver Date: 14 Jul 09 - 10:04 AM When it comes to incredible voices... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Y_tuSsCXw |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: SharonA Date: 14 Jul 09 - 12:58 PM Amos: My first impression of your YouTube link = these must be the people that the mutants from "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" mutated from. After listening to the clip, I must say I'm disappointed that the sound recording is so overproduced (reverbbed, mixed and mastered). Can't help wondering how else that recording was manipulated -- is it just a bunch of vocal tracks spliced together via computer program? Are those even human voices, or electronic simulations, or some of each? I'd like to see The Vocapeople in a live performance, to see if they are really singing while they're jumping around, or whether they are lip-synching a la Milli Vanilli. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Vocapeople From: Stringsinger Date: 15 Jul 09 - 12:56 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT3Ly_-o28k&feature=fvw These guys walk away with the most swinging vocals ever. Frank |
