Subject: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 14 Jul 09 - 01:46 PM Tam, if I've embarrassed you with this thread, then please let me know and I'll ask Joe to take it down.... ....BUT.....please think carefully, because I've just been led to your music, and bells are going off all over the place in my head! I've literally JUST heard you singing for the first time, after finding you in the Mudcat Members Profiles which flashed onto the screen just now when I loaded the page up. From there I found my way to your Myspace page......and then to the video of you singing 'Water Boy' and 'House of the Rising Sun' ....and I am totally blown away by your BEAUTIFUL voice! What POWER! What a fabulous bluesy, raunchy, expressive voice you have! Heck, I am hearing something so, SO special here! I'm totally blown away, Tam, I really am. I know that you said you sing at your local folk club but...but...........? Do they know what an absolute jewel they have? Right folks, we all have to move down to Kent and join Tam's club! :0) Sweet Lady, you need to make a CD...and FAST! Put me down for several copies, because your incredible voice should be shared around and enjoyed by many, many people. You are blessed with a wonderful talent! Again, sorry to cause you any embarrassment, but when I hear magic, I shout out about it. Heck, I bet your Andie is smiling away as I'm writing this, because goodness me does her Mum have a voice to be proud of! Magic, Tam. Absolute MAGIC! Just WOW, Kid! Tam singing 'Water Boy' -AMAZING! Tam singing 'The House of the Rising Sun' - WOWWWWW! A very stunned, but very happy Lizzie :0) x And Tam, do you have those videos on Youtube, as well as Myspace? They're much easier to whizz on to Facebook and around the world on Youtube, that's all. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Jeri Date: 14 Jul 09 - 02:15 PM Wonderful singing! Tam, you have to get together with Barry Finn & Ken Schatz when they're over there. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Jack Campin Date: 14 Jul 09 - 02:29 PM It appears we aren't allowed to say there's a moral issue about patronizing Myspace as well as a technical one.

Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Will Fly Date: 14 Jul 09 - 02:34 PM I don't know what your problem is, Jack - just enjoy the feckin' music. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Will Fly Date: 14 Jul 09 - 02:35 PM Oh, and by the way, VT - great stuff - great voice - great performances. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Rifleman (inactive) Date: 14 Jul 09 - 02:52 PM "I don't know what your problem is, Jack - just enjoy the feckin' music" there's no moral issue involved in accessing myspace I think it all has to do with who owns myspace that is Campin's problem, well don"t let it stop you from having a good time...oops it already has....*LOL* |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: VirginiaTam Date: 14 Jul 09 - 03:21 PM GULP.... Gee Lizzie. My head will grow so fat, it may affect my singing. I did not sing like that at all until only recently when I started singing again. Before Andie (my older daughter for those who don't know) passed away I had a Loreena McKennitt kind of voice. Andie was the blues singer. I did not sing at all or even listen to music for over 2 years following her death. I don't know what the moral issue is regards MySpace. I joined it just after Andie passed away. 1) To see what she had written there. 2) To let her online friends know that she had passed away. 3) To keep in touch with my younger daughter and Andie's friends since I am in UK and they are in the US. The videos on myspace are nicked from youtube. Friend made them at pub in Kent when I was singing there and put them up on his youtube space. My folk club is in Chelmsford, Essex. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks for the kind words. Tam |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 14 Jul 09 - 03:33 PM VT has a stunningly Powerful voice and due to the fact that we share the same circle of folk venue orbits I have heard her many times. There are a number of geeat female singers in our little folk orbit and although I do sometimes jokingly tease them on Mudcat. VT should take heed of the above 1st thread. I completely Agree. Reagrds to all Pierre. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: ClaireBear Date: 14 Jul 09 - 04:00 PM Tam, that's lovely work, and I totally agree with Jeri that you must hook up with Barry Finn and Ken Schatz, who specialize in prison and work songs. I wish I could sing with you myself, but I'm geographically undesirable (in California). 'Course, you could always come to the Getaway... |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Jul 09 - 04:36 PM Another big voice heard from! Sing on! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 14 Jul 09 - 04:59 PM I found them, Tam...thanks. :0) Tam's songs on Youtube |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 14 Jul 09 - 05:26 PM Yeah Lizzie, a powerful performer with really potent vocals. Tam could very easily 'own' a stage, and an audience. Wasn't there one of you doing 'John Henry' too Tam? Or am I imagining things... Anyway Lizzie, that's a good'un too. 'Wade in in the Water' and 'The Minstrel' are wonderful & should also be up on Tubey too! Pity we didn't get a Tubey of Tam standing with the 'magic stick' before the Knockers roaring fire, delivering 'The Minstrel'. One of the most strongly affecting performances I've seen. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Rifleman (inactive) Date: 14 Jul 09 - 06:20 PM VT certainly does have one the most powerful voices I've heard in along time, with talent to spare, unlike some who post links to their performances. VT keep at! :-) |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: olddude Date: 14 Jul 09 - 06:48 PM BEAUTIFUL ... ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL .. SING WITH ME ANYTIME |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: bobad Date: 14 Jul 09 - 07:01 PM Very nice! |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: melodeonboy Date: 14 Jul 09 - 07:08 PM All of the above, really. I'm lucky in that I see a high proportion of her performances, being in the same "folk orbit"! Good on ya, gal! |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: olddude Date: 14 Jul 09 - 07:50 PM Gotta comment again Dang ... girl You can sing !!!!! Wonderful ... still listening ... Jaw dropping awesome ... great did I say great ... wow ... ok how about amazin ... |

Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: VirginiaTam Date: 15 Jul 09 - 01:11 AM errgg. uh well uh, shucks... Sittin here in my lounge reading and feeling extremely self-conscious. I may have to kick Lizzie Cornish sometime for doing this to me :) Crow Sister the other youtube was from the pub blog spot, link is somewhere on one of the Stoke threads. Partial performance of Midnight Special. Has Fisheye put any videos up from Knockholt yet? Thank you all for the glowing praise. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Peace Date: 15 Jul 09 - 01:36 AM I just had time for one. You deserve 'glowing' praise. Voice WOW |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 15 Jul 09 - 03:42 AM "errgg. uh well uh, shucks... Sittin here in my lounge reading and feeling extremely self-conscious. I may have to kick Lizzie Cornish sometime for doing this to me :)" :0) LOL I could book you in between 3.30 and 5.00 next Tuesday afternoon, Tam, right after a few others who probably feel the same. Mind you, I only allow 5 minutes per kicking session... ;0) I'm off to try and find those other Youtube videos now..You've set me a challenge! Good to see so many wonderful comments in here. You deserve 'em all. Talent's talent, a gift is a gift..and you've been blessed with them both.....and I reckon Andie's *loving* the way you're now singing! :0) |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 15 Jul 09 - 05:40 AM I used the links Lizzie provided in her first post. 'Water Boy' was great but I only heard a bit of 'House' as it froze - twice - & I had to force-quit - twice. fooey I wanna hear more so I'll try again later sandra |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: The Barden of England Date: 15 Jul 09 - 06:23 AM Virginia Tam - told you so!! When I first met VT last year at Rochester Sweeps and asked her if she would like to sing, she was a bit reluctant. However, as soon as she started I was 'wowed' and you can now see why. It's always a pleasure to hear her whenever she can make it 'over the River Thames' to us in Kent. Well done Lizzie for pointing her out to people. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Azizi Date: 15 Jul 09 - 08:11 AM Virginia Tam, I love the sound of your powerful, soulful voice. Do you have any CDs? |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: olddude Date: 15 Jul 09 - 08:33 AM and she plays a Martin also :-) least it looked like a Martin ... yup great taste all the way around |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Azizi Date: 15 Jul 09 - 08:35 AM Well, lemme rephrase that since I know you have some CDs. What I meant was Virginia Tam, are there any CDs for sale of you singing? And if so, would you or someone else post that information. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 15 Jul 09 - 10:53 AM Hi Azizi, Tam's just off on her hols atm (Scotland thread in BS), so she might not be able to reply to your query - thought I'd do so on her behalf, in case it looked like she was being either coy, or rude or something :-) Tam's a hobbyist folksinger, and I believe has never even so much as graced a folk club stage ;-) Maybe someone who knows how to go about producing CD's, should offer her some advice about it though? |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Richard Bridge Date: 15 Jul 09 - 11:02 AM It's a Sigma. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Azizi Date: 15 Jul 09 - 11:18 AM Thanks, Crow Sister. Surely there's enough British 'Catters who have produced CDs that if Virginia Tam wants to do a CD, they'd help her. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: olddude Date: 15 Jul 09 - 11:51 AM sigma, well we won't hold that against her LOL ... actually they are a fine guitar especially the old Japan made ones |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Richard Bridge Date: 15 Jul 09 - 12:10 PM It's a nice one. VT calls her "Odetta" because whe is dark with a powerful voice. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 15 Jul 09 - 01:01 PM 'The Midnight Special' - (I found it, Tam! :0) - on your myspace) |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: GUEST Date: 15 Jul 09 - 04:39 PM I, too, am impressed! It seemed to me that the YouTube presentation of "Water Boy" offered better sound quality (and video quality, too) than the exact same clip as posted on MySpace. Go figure. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Lonesome EJ Date: 15 Jul 09 - 07:44 PM Great pipes, VT! |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Drumshanty Date: 16 Jul 09 - 11:57 AM Shivers down the spine stuff - your voice is wonderful. I really hope I bump into you someday along the way, Tam, and hear you for real. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Abdul The Bul Bul Date: 17 Jul 09 - 01:47 AM Over the short time I've known VT and the KNOCKHOLT crowd it has been an uplifting experience reading and watching what seems to me to have been a personal regeneration. I think "we aint heard nothing yet" from VT and will be really happy when my overseas sentence is complete and I can get back into the scene. You deserve all the above VT and a nod of the head in acknowledgement to the Silent One too. And It's a bloody good Sigma, Mahogany y'know. Have a good Knockholt. Al |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Barry Finn Date: 17 Jul 09 - 01:56 AM Wonderful stuff. I can't imagine how great you'd sound up close & live in a folk club. Well maybe 3 rows back, have to be careful at my age about getting blown away Barry |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Lonesome EJ Date: 17 Jul 09 - 02:18 AM Look who's talking Barry! If the two of you squared off simultaneously anyone caught in the force field between you would be flattened!;>} |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: VirginiaTam Date: 17 Jul 09 - 12:26 PM Hi Tamara here. Typing from Minch View Cottage Between Gairloch and Melvaig Scotland. Incredible view. I am not being coy and I wasn't raised to be rude, though sometimes it happens accidentally. Thank you for all the praise. Going to see live music to night at Gairloch Old Inn. Maybe I will sing. TheSilentOne is forcing me to take the guitar. Shower now hugs |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: VirginiaTam Date: 17 Jul 09 - 01:04 PM still no shower... still putting things away and stopping to gasp at the view from almost every window. sun sparkling on the sea. had to come back to say special thanks to Crow Sister and Richard for answering questions. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 17 Jul 09 - 01:20 PM Hey Tam! So you took your lappy then? I've only dabbled in Scotland - around Inverness where a few family members lived. Bloody lovely though! Enjoy your evening at at Gairloch Old Inn. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Mick Woods Date: 17 Jul 09 - 01:24 PM Have a great time Tam! Hope to y'all at Knockholt. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 17 Jul 09 - 01:25 PM Sounds beautiful, Tam. Hope you have a lovely time... I came bottom in geography, a very long time ago, as me and maps don't mix, but...if you're anywhere near Newton Stewart during your holiday...pop in and see some fellow Mudcatters and Folkies, Jan and Chris, who run The Cafe Cree there. They'd LOVE to meet you..and their food is out of this world! They were regional finalists in Gary Rhodes 'Local Food Heroes' this year...All their food is locally sourced and produced, and you'll be sure of a very entertaining afternoon, because Jan will have you laughing the entire time you're there. She's such a wonderful person, so funny..very warm...and Chris cooks like an absolute dream. All that AND they play folk music in the cafe too! The Cafe Cree -in Newton Stewart Anyway...just in case you're oop that way... |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Mick Woods Date: 17 Jul 09 - 01:33 PM That should be see y'all at Knockholt! I'll have to move this computer out of thr dark. By the way isn't it great that VT is getting lots of praise. I must point out though that these amateur digital recordings although OK don't get close to capturing the full quality of her voice. It would be great if she went into a studio with a decent producer. I will put her in touch with my friend Mitch Hiller when she gets back. Mitch lives in Essex too. He has produced and been vocal coach for the likes of Chaka Kahn, Christy moore, Lulu, Keifer Sutherland(yes)Pet Shop Boys and many more. I'm sure that he can at the very least give her some good advice on recording. |
Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 17 Jul 09 - 01:43 PM "It would be great if she went into a studio with a decent producer." Absolutely BRILLIANT idea, Mick! |

Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: VirginiaTam Date: 18 Jul 09 - 02:30 PM wish Crow Sister would ressurrect her myspace and music. take some of the pressure off of me. no sparkling today. neither sea nor me. enjoyed Loch Carron highland games even in the drizzle though. magic stuff. like Crow Sister's voice. hot water bottle, earl grey and sofa in lounge looking out to see are calling me now. ta |

Subject: RE: Virginia Tam's Voice From: Richard Bridge Date: 19 Jul 09 - 11:54 AM De gustibus non disputandum, but I also think that Crow Sister is world class. |
