Dh'éirich mi moch madainn Chéitein, Mas moch an-diugh bu mhuich' an dé e. 'S binn a' chòisir rinn mi éisdeachd. Smeòraichean air bhàrr nan geugan, Uiseagan os cionn an t-sléibhe. 'S bòidhche fhiamh 's a' ghrian ag éirigh, Madainn chiùin fo dhriùchd nan speuran, Bric air linneachan a' leumraich. Leannaidh slàinte agus éibhneas Riùthasan a bhios moch ag éirigh. translation I arose early on a May morning. If early today it was earlier yesterday. Sweet was the choir I listened to, thrushes on the tops of the branches, larks above the moor. Beautiful is the prospect, with the sun rising, a calm morning under the dew of the heavens, trout leaping in the pools. There will follow health and happiness for those who rise early |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Dh'èirich mi moch madainn Chèitein From: Felipa Date: 21 Apr 21 - 04:54 PM re the lyrics posted by Maple Leaf Boy, Charles Fraser Mackintosh (1828 – 1901) "was a Scottish lawyer, land developer, author, and independent Liberal and Crofters Party politician. He was a significant champion of the Scottish Gaelic language in Victorian Britain." wikipedia "As a lawyer, he had access to many rare manuscripts and documents, and these formed the basis for his own published works on Scottish history.[5] In his historical work, Fraser-Mackintosh admitted to a sympathy for the Jacobite cause of 'Bonnie Prince Charlie,' due to being indirectly named after the prince via various Jacobite ancestors. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. In 1875, he was Chief of the Gaelic Society of Inverness. He was the third President of An Comunn Gaidhealach, the national Gaelic Society, serving from 1896 to 1898. "It is thought that Fraser-Mackintosh rendered legal assistance to Mairi Mhòr nan Oran [great Mairi of the songs - poet and land rights campaigner] when she was accused of theft from her employer in 1872. He appears to have recruited to her cause by John Murdoch and to have earned her enduring gratitude and affection. He is one of the land rights campaigners mentioned in her celebrated poem Nuair a chaidh na ceithir ùr oirre. ... .. "One of five members of the Napier Commission, set up in 1883, to investigate the crofters' situation; he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Crofters' Commission and for promoting the use of Gaelic in Highland schools. His efforts led to the establishment of a Free Library in Inverness in 1883." |

Hì rim i call éile Hù a hò hì rì Eu ruibh i a hò Hù gurie hùm ò Thàinig mo leannan ’nam chòmhdhail, bhuail sinn air a’ chòmhradh ghòrach. Cha d’ thàinig e nuair bu chòir dhà, tiota beag mun d’ rinn mi ’m pòsadh. Ri mac a’ bhodachain bhrònaich, nach tug crios, neo brèid, neo bròg dhomh. Nach tug an stìom is i bu chòir dhomh, mhic an fhir o ’n charra sgiathach, ’S eilean mòr nan eun fiadhaich, bheirinn fhèin mo bhòid ’s mo bhriathran. Notice it is a misty morning, "madainn cheòthar", not a May morning "madainn Chèitein", and has a different chorus from the two version of "Dh'èirich mi moch madainn Chèitein" previously given in this discussion. |
