Once again, no dosh. I'd give my eye teeth to be there, but they've already been replaced with very expensive dentures.

You all have a great time, and drink ONE pint each for me.

Maybe next year.

Our band will be there staying in a flat near the Bedford so nice and central - the whole band this year which will be great for us. Here's a link to mugshots on our website so if you recognize us come and say hello!

Lets hope for some sunshine, we really enjoyed playing on the prom in the sunshine a couple of times last year.

Tim Edwards and I will be running morning singarounds (other forms of performance welcome) for early birds in the Faulkner Bar of the Royal York, 10.30-12.30, Sunday to Friday. Entry free, contributions to the festival collecting tin optional.

The 12.30 finish means I'll be able to drop by the Anchor afterwards. Or even sprint up to the Volunteer, though probably won't be able to get through the door!

I'll be there - particularly involved in running Herbaceous Border, for anyone who cares to dance some border morris or to join in with the Hosepipe Banned. On the Esplanade outside the RY&F 11.00am (for anyone) & 6.00pm (for those with some experience) starting Sunday evening.

When not there (and not lugging suitcases full of sticks and morris jackets around) I might be found in the Anchor, or Woodlands or even dancing with Exmoor Border or just enjoying the Sidmouth BUZZ.

Sue
PS John J, we shall indeed miss both you and your good wife from the Herbaceous ranks.

If not prevented by the dreaded lurgi, Mexican flu, housemaid's knee or similar disasters I'll be leaping about with Hexham Morrismen - wherever and whenever it says so on the programme. In between times, I hope to sample as many as possible of the delights on offer (including, of course, Mrs Lemon's ambrosial brew) but will probably end up at the LNE on most evenings.

I have received a cheque - as long as it doesn't bounce I will have money to spend/put in collecting tins.

I have money promised, but not until the end of the month.

The knees are bad, though. I have been climbing up and down the ladder to the loft, bringing things down to sell, carrying them up a flight of stairs - and then returning what was not sold.

But - the van is booked, the final countdown is in progress. Lift off is Friday afternoon sometime.

It eventually stopped raining at about 7.15 this evening.
The campsite entrance and top end of the field are already very muddy.
Wellies are definitely recommended unless there is lots of sun tomorrow to dry it out.

I might not now get there. I was discharged from Derriford Hospital tonight and because they are not sure of the cause I have to go back on Monday to be totally wired up and put on a treadmill. Depending on what they find depends on if I can put in an appearance. Hope to get down for a few hours at the very least.

Hoping that the camp-site allows vehicular access on, probably, Friday. It was, strictly speaking, shut on our arrival last year. Don't ask. And that it will be drier than forecast.

Should be doing some ceilidhs although the Anchor car-park is not viewed with favour, and it seems to have got steeper - have to catch Climax among others, and trying to find the best crab sandwiches. Wonder about Mr Potts' new dance.

Should get to the Volunteer and see Surreysinger and probably David Steptoe there. And the Bedford, and the Swan which have been known to have a table full of people who usually to be found in another pub in, er, Surrey.

Possibly a bit of Faulkner, maybe even Middle Bar.

Maybe a workshop or two - instrumental stuff and maybe story-telling. Why do they start so early?

Not listed to dance - too new a side - but anyway the squire suggests we bring our kit. Should have [counts] seven-and-a-half dancers/musicians.

[May need to cut a hazel stick for whichever Border ad-hoc side specify it rather than purloin one from the deputy bagman.]

Need to leave early the Saturday after to do duty on water elsewhere, with Hekety on LNE on the Friday. Hum.

I will be at Sidders on the Sunday. Usually arrive at 730am and wake the Sailing club up for our first coffee.

Lovely seeing the seafront come alive gradually.

Hope to catch up with a few dancing teams (for Sunray work) and then loads of friends as the day moves on.

Might also try to squeeze into the Acoustic Cafe, if it is operating as usual. It's a lovely spot and a chance to see some really good talent (excluding me that is!!!)

As to weather....who knows...

Old Vermin - I hope you'll come and dance with Herbaceous Border if your 7 and a half members can't quite manage a set up yourselves!

And anyone else too!
You'll find us in the "Not-the-Sunday-Morning-Procession" meeting up on the Esplanade past the Bedford in good time to set off at 10.30.
In the Blackmore Gardens for a 10th anniv party 4-5.30 on Sun and dancing on the Esplanade outside the RY&F that evening & the rest of the week from 6-7. In kit please! Musicians welcome too.

And for anyone who's never done any morris (plus some who have, please!)
M-F 11-12 outside the RY&F

I should have left by now, so no point in replying to this! See you all there.

Wonder about Mr Potts' new dance.

bin the discussion of E-Ceilidh. Needs teaks we reckon, but I bet he will try it one of the days. When there are plenty of experts to demonstrate the minor problems.

it is a good dance or will be soon. I have a work-a-round the pressure point but I don't think it is good fodder for everyone.

I bet he won't try it in the (not never no-how "ceilidh in the ford" which will not happen again this year).

What a nice little town!

Foul drive down - nearly 2 hours to do 4 miles by Stonehenge, so arrived after 7 pm, to my annoyance.

Fun in the Bedford until LATE Fri/Sat - the weak Otter Bitter was excellent. Some fine players but really too much background noise to sing much. Lost a capo and someone put a dent in my guitar. And so to bed ratarsed at 4 am.

A day on the beer but not too much on Sat. Good Otter Bitter in the Newt. Good rapper side called something funny like Scrunge (not quite - ah! Smudge) came in. Pasty from sho up side alley.

Not so keen on the beer in the Swan, but a fairly nice session until it descended into alcohol-fuelled Americana and AR. Then the Ship (enjoyed that), a quick admire of Stacey's expert diddling downstairs in the Anchor, and a look into the upstairs middle bar.

Eat lamb and mint pattie from pasty shop by church. Very nice.

Inspect Bedford from outside - no way that I fit in there! Wander and look into various doors - the sessions seem to be mostly diddly or humpty. Stroll up road and look into Swan (totally rammed!) and Radway (sounded diddly) and so on to the Volunteer - that was more relaxed, but I had had enough to drink by then if I was going to drive Sunday.

Nice drive back on Sunday - not much traffic until after Honiton, Nice play A303/M3 with an Audi that was about 7 years younger than my Volvo, and fair until Heathrow where there was a nasty blockage.

Nice to see JB, KtC, Dilligaf, the Shirt Murderer, Noreen and Stewart, Thrift music owner, Breton Cap, Gastove and any other friends I may have forgotten.

Must try to get there for longer next year. More planning to get to the right places at the right times.

I was only there from about 5 until 9:15 on Saturday evening as I had to drive back to Yorkshire (which was not fun) but went to The Newt, The Anchor, The Bedford amongst others.

Will spend a day there on Friday as I have to pick my son up from Bath on Saturday morning and see how the survivors are doing.

The other place on Friday, I will be in the distant field (ie the first you get to when you drive into Broadstairs) with Bishop Gundulf's. Evening I am likely to be in Yacht Club, or the new pub which is an open session in the middle of town.

Saturday, playing drum with Bishop Gundulf's. Or as aforesaid.

It depends on what you think of as distinguishing: 60, short fat, bearded, long grey hair, (a bit typical really). Little black hat that is not quite a trilby and not quite a pork-pie. A bit like the ones that Pete Docherty or Jay Kay wear. Guitar likely to be Hagstrom (rare) or Mugen (rare). Mandolin, Kentucky flatiron (fairly unusual). Might be wearing a Mudcat badge that says "Richard Bridge", if, unlike most old folkies, you can see at a distance (without specs).

Not a murder as far as a local has informed me, but some poor girl raped and severely battered. Not the sort of thing that you expect in Sidmouth and, hopefully, nothing to do with the Folk Festival. Have a great time in Broadstairs Richard, and I may well come down for a day. We shall see.

Opinions re campsite please....

If any vehicle movement at all was possible, we allowed it - but ONLY on the basis that once in, you stay. If you then take your car off, you don't get back in & go to the car park instead.

Quite a few have commented that this made the site safer for kids & greener (in both senses of the word) & maybe we should use this policy even in good weather....

Any thoughts?

It would be a very good idea if car movements were limited either to your once-on-you-stay policy or a twice per week policy to allow for Waitrose shopping. However, as with all car restriction ideas, the first step is to provide viable and safe alternatives.

Walking along the Bulverton Road is nowadays less safe than in the past because there are so few warning signs for drivers. Also a better bus service would help. There were some complaints about the service being 40 minutes rather than 20. I didn't use it myself.

Ambulances have been called in the last two years to accidents along this road during folk week - I heard various stories about the one this year - pedestrian vs cyclist or two cyclists vs car - there were several versions! Anyone know exactly what happened?

There were major problems in the town centre finding somewhere to chain bicycles - maybe the festival could encourage bicycle use - the Town Council should be doing this anyway now the full cycle track to Sidford has been completed.

This would make B&B at Sidford a very viable proposition - use your car to come to Sidmouth with bicycles on the back, park up for the week and cycle in every day in complete safety. I have people in my garden staying in motorhomes who do just this - they think the easy ride in is much preferable to the official campsite. And they get electric hookup thrown in for free!

I would like to see the festival provide additional temporary bicycle chaining points - additional to the many extra permanent ones that the Town Council should be providing.

I was thinking the other day about how awful the traffic has become in Sidmouth the past few years and was wondering if a Park and Ride scheme would work?!? Perhaps a field near the Bowd or Waitrose?

Get some kind of rickshaws or something similar for local transportation?!?

Bicycle hire scheme?

Pedestrianise the the B3176 from the campsite to the roundabout near the Knowle?

lot's of ideas but none which I would think to be supported by locals??!
