Forty years ago today three men set off on Apollo 11 toward the moon to finally make that "One small step for man: One giant leap for Mankind". Certainly historic words. All that came into being after Russia launched Sputnik and then the first man in space. I remember America catching up and other words when the world heard "Godspeed John Glenn". But what has all this to do with folk music?

Tomorrow evening one of the UK's most respected folk singer/songwriters will start off on a journey that will take him on his last concert to Gainsborough. We can all hope for a return at some time in the future but, for now, the end of an era has been reached.

"Godspeed" was also the last words spoke between Fritha, the young girl who found a wounded Snow Goose, and Phillip who saw it back to health in the Paul Gallico novella "Snow Goose". It was Tom Bliss who took it all in and gave us a rather beautiful song "God Speed". It's the song that introduced me the works of Tom Bliss.

And so it is I would like to finish with a message and a hope that Tom Bliss will have good health, good fortune and good luck in the future. I am sure others will add their comments and wishes...

"Godspeed Tom Bliss" :-)

Really looking forward to seeing his last performance at Gainsborough Folk Club tomorrow night but sad that it is his last public performance.. his songwriting/singing talent will be well missed.

For those of us who can't see him in person, there are many song lyrics and clips available on his website, http://napperbliss.co.uk/

God Speed, Tom. I hope we'll still see you here at Mudcat.

-Joe-

GOD SPEED (The Snow Goose)

This song will mean little to those who have never read The Snow Goose. Originally published in 1940 as a newspaper short story, and then as a book in 1946, this is the work of the American writer Paul Gallico (1897-1976). It hinges on the relationship between a solitary artist and a young girl who seeks his help in caring for an injured bird. Gallico used a true story from a previous book about a couple who had tended and tamed a wounded snow goose on the Essex Marshes.

Philip, the painter, is based on Gallico's firend, the artist Peter Scott, son of Captain Robert Falcon Scott (of the Antarctic), who, like Philip, lived in a light house - but at Sutton Bridge on the Wash. Peter's mother, the sculpor Kathleen Bruce, made a bust of John Montagu which stands in the hallway at Beaulieu.

Silver white

a symphony of water, wind and light

where a saltmarsh meets the sea

sanctuary

Grey and green

And the painter's eye sees every hue between

and every brushstroke's reeds or rain

to ease his pain

Now it's my time,

My turn to hold you

My time,

My turn to set you free

God-speed

Black and white

the mighty wings that never tired in flight

that crossed an ocean in one bound

brought to ground

Pearl and gold

with violet eyes to fire a heart grown cold

brings her burden to be healed

to be revealed

Black and red

the port aflame, so many good men dead

with peppered sail and angel's wings

salvation brings

Crimson blue

a saltmarsh sunset - gulls fly through

the snow goose has no tale to tell

just farewell

Tom

Sorry I can't be at Gainsborugh Folk Club tomorrow night, as my daughters 18th birthday has had to take priority and I will be out with my family tomorrow night.

I was originally looking forward to seeing you Tom and booked my ticket ages ago, but hadn't accounted for my family committments.

My very best wishes for the future and good luck on your future journeys.

Les Worrall

Tom,
I too am really sad that I've been unable to make it to any of your final few performances, and just can't get to Gainsborough tomorrow.

But I stronglyecho those now immortal words - Godspeed, mate, and do keep in touch with us all somehow. Me, I miss you already...!

Dear Tom,

Thank you so much for your moving songs, your wonderful stories, and the music, of course. I've learnt a great deal from your songs.

I was really sorry not to have been able to catch you recently when you came to Sidmouth, but I didn't know about the gig until a few hours before you were due to play at Eve's, and already had other committments. I was lucky enough to watch you at Sidmouth Folk Week a bit of a while back now, though, and I loved every moment of listening to you and Tom Napper.

Love your songs, love your stories, and your intelligent, gentle and compassionate nature.

Don't stay away too long, because the folk world will be all the poorer without you and your beautiful songs.

And hey, don't forget to write in here from time to time, and on the BBC too, because many of us enjoy your eloquent and entertaining posts.

And if there is *anyone* out there who still hasn't heard Tom, well...feast your ears on these:

A whole lotta Tom - Youtube

Not forgetting, of course, the oh so beautiful 'Boat to Burhou'

Tom's Myspace

In short, Tom Bliss, you ROCK! :0)

God Speed you back again, real soon.

Lizzie :0) x

A sad day, but I wish you all the very best in whatever do. Let's just trust somewhere down the line you will have the time and inclination to return to performing; I can't see new songs not finding their way out, so we live in hope!

Have fun, and stay in touch with us lot.
