Colorado and am finding it difficult to locate fellow banjo, dulcimer, players. I have tried posting a notice on the bulletin boards at places like the grocery store or conv. store but to no avail. My advice ...... keep trying don't give up. Banjoman_CO (Fred) |

Subject: RE: Mountain Dulcimer players in Texas From: folk1234 Date: 14 Jul 99 - 04:57 PM Dear Banjoman & Allan C. It's a long drive, but once a month (1st Saturday) you may want to try the Oklahoma City Traditional Music Assn (www.octma.org). We have workshops (mtn dulcimer, hammer dulcimer, guitar. fiddle, penny whistle, and song swap (I co-lead this one)from 6:00 to 7:30pm; from 8:00 to 10:00 we have the playaround in the auditorium, where members & guests sign up to perform while the rest of us enjoy the music; from 10:00 to mid-night we break up into jam sesions. Normally there's a loud & moving bluegrass jam, a traditional folk song, (ballad, American, Celtic, contemporary) jam, and maybe one or two other jams (gospel, slow jam, cajun, patriotic, etc.) Sometimes small groups of people gather to do their own thing. We've just instituted a $3.00/head cover charge. Membership, if you chose to join, is $18.00/yr to cover cost of the monthly newsletter. From time to time we have a special guest to do workshops and mini concert. On Aug 7, we will have Russell Cook doing a hammer dulcimer ws and mini concert (30 min). I will be happy to host you & introduce you around. Also, I live in SE OK, Ada, which may only be a 3 hr drive from you Allan C. You could meet me Sat afternon, & we could go to OKC together (1.5 hrs). We could put you up on Sat night back in Ada. Banjoman, you're welcome to come to Ada, but you may want to meet us in OKC. If you'd like, I'll try to find someone to put you up in OKC. Please e-mail or mudcat mail me for more info. |

Subject: RE: Mountain Dulcimer players in Texas From: Allan C. Date: 15 Jul 99 - 07:29 AM evad, don't give up yet. These things take time. Folk1234's posting seems helpful. If this thread fades with time, simply resurrect it periodically with a new post, such as, "Refresh". You can keep track of it by clicking on the "Add Thread To Tracer" line above and to the left of the "Reply to Thread" area. "Trace" is also available on the "Forum Home" page. Then you will always be able to access it by way of your personal page. And, evad, in case nobody else has already said so, WELCOME TO THE MUDCAT! Glad you are with us! |

Subject: RE: Mountain Dulcimer players in Texas From: Arkie Date: 16 Jul 99 - 01:29 AM There is a great dulcimer festival at Glen Rose, TX every year in May where you will find the likes of Dana Hamilton , a National Champion on Hammered and Mountain Dulcimer and many others. There are also workshops, contests, and concerts at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, AR on the fourth weekend in April every year. The Harris County Dulcimer Club in Houston has some wonderful players. These are all quite a drive from Marshall, but worth the effort. |

Subject: RE: Mountain Dulcimer players in Texas From: Allan C. Date: 07 Feb 04 - 10:21 PM I thought it might be useful to resurrect this thread. I spent today at a festival put on by the Lone Star State Dulcimer Society. It was mighty good. The place was absolutely bristling with long, pointy mountain dulcimers as well as more trapezoidal, hammered dulcimers than you could shake a stick at. (Come to think of it, there were lots of sticks being shaken at them.) Virtually all of them were making fabulous music. There were lots of workshops from which to choose (see schedule at the link for the winter festival) – even some for complete beginners. Meanwhile, there were some fabulous performers, the most impressive of which (at least to me,) was Banshee in the Kitchen, a trio of extremely versatile and talented performers who offered an artfully prepared dish of Celtic music seasoned with a dash of jazz. Quite a few vendors were there, selling every manner of dulcimer as well as psaltries, fiddles, instructional books and CD's. I quickly ran out of cash and had to leave before I was tempted to break out the plastic. If this was a hint of what will be at Glen Rose, then I will plan to be there. If any of you happen to be in the area in early May, I suggest you give this event some serious thought. |
