Fearghal, the only other recording I could find is on Itunes or Amazon, by "Screaming Orphans": you can just buy the one track if that's what you want. Nothing came up on all the Furey's currently available CDs.

OED says they don't know where "planxty" came from but they think it might be from Latin "plangere", to strike. It certainly isn't from Irish.

I'd guess maybe from Latin "planctus", lament. ("Elegy" was generalized to include poems that nothing to do with commemorating the dead, so why not that one as well?)

'Colonel Irwin' and 'Colonel John Irwin' are two completely different tunes. 'Colonel John Irwin' is the one sometimes known as 'Planxty Irwin'.

Apparently there were words to Planxty Irwin (aka Colonel Irwin). An English translation of the first verse:

We will take our way without delay
To see a Noble, brave and gay,
The gallant Colonel near the sea,
Him I mean to treat of;
With mirth and joy he fills his glasses,
Delights to cheer both lads and lasses,
This is John I will answer,
The brave English Irelander.

Well, Feargal, how well-acquainted are you with music on computers and with using MIDI? Give us a little information about what you need.

If you have music software, you can go to this site:

http://www.contemplator.com/carolan/complt.html

and search for 'Irwin'. Left click on the title to hear the tune, right click on the title to save it. Let's hope that people here are correct in saying that the song you want is based on 'Planxty Irwin.'

The beauty of MIDI software is that it gives you power over the song. You can change the key, change the speed, alter notes, change elefs, print it, write new parts, etc etc.

But perhaps you use ABC. I bet you could find an ABC file of it at JC's Tunefinder, which is a wonderful site with traditional tunes in many formats. Come to think of it, go there first and see what you find.

The tune by Eddie Furey, O'Carolan's (or Carolan's) Tribute....any idea which album, apart from "The sound of the Fureys" it appeared on? I am desperate to get hold of this song! Perhaps another artist has released the tune?

IMO the Carolan/ O'Carolan dispute has come about through the confusion of the running togother of his first & second names.

As in Turlough pronounced Turl-O plus Carolan

According to MUCH debate on another thread, it is,in fact, just "Carolan" without the "O'" if it's just the surname you use.So one refers to either ;
    A piece by Turlough O'Carolan
                or
A Carolan piece.

No,I don't get it either,but apparently some learned men who use the pen,so to speak,have deliberated,discussed,and decided thus.

Karen Tweed is doing an all-day workshop on the music of O'Carolan for any instrument on Saturday 10th. July 2010 at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club in Sussex, UK.

Karen performs at the club in the evening.
