It's from Núria Feliu's album "Viure en Barcelona" (1981). There's no "tothom" or "tan bonic" to be seen anywhere in these lyrics.

Mira que li hem sabut
treure el profit
a Montjuïc.
Hi hem plantat un gran castell
que és un museu
i és un quarter.
És un parc natural
d'atraccions internacionals.
Hi ha el Teatre Grec
i el Cementiri
del Sud-Oest.

Li hem sabut treure el suc,
hi ha un circuit
a Montjuïc.
I els cotxes jubilats,
tot rovellats,
són a Montjuïc.
I en el Poble Espanyol
l'artesania
treballa al sol.

Tenim museus antics
i de moderns
a Montjuïc;
Palau de les Nacions,
i el de Congressos
i Exposicions.
Palau d'Esports,
on s'exhibeixen
cantants bons.
I els genets i els cavalls
del Carrussel
Municipal.

A Montjuïc trobareu
plantes i flors
de tot arreu.
Des del Funicular,
tot Barcelona
contemplareu.
I la televisió
a Miramar
hi té un racó.
També hi ha un asil
a on els vells
hi troben niu.

Montjuïc tradicional,
la Font del Gat
és a Montjuïc.
Montjuïc barceloní
amb un Estadi
Olímpic.
Mireu que li hem sabut
ben treure el suc
a Montjuïc

Many thanks Dave - & your Catalan scholar friend! You were *very* kind to look into this for me. Most helpful.

I shall now have to seek this info out elsewhere . . . wish me luck!

If I ever *do* find the info. I am seeking, I shall of course post it here at MudCat. It's probably - bearing in mind the longevity of time between this posting & my last batch of messages at MudCat re this query - a case of "For updates, please check back to this website in circa 2 years" - haha!! ,-)

A Catalan scholar writes: (edited)

I am 95% certain that this is not a folk song but just a 19th or early 20th century parlour song. I can find nothing like it in any of my sources, which are not inconsiderable. Of course, we do not have the tune, and it may be that a trad. tune was used with composed words. I agree with one of the other correspondents to this thread, who casts doubts on the song being folk because of the nostalgic reference to Montjuïc, which historically has been used by the Spanish for bombarding the citizens of Barcelona. The only song I know that refers to Montjuïc is a very vulgar song called "La Ramona i en Tonet" which only mentions the place as somewhere where courting couples do what comes naturally in the bushes. And it's nothing like the song in question.

HTH

Dave

Hi FolkieDave

Thanks for your message earlier, in the summer.

We didn't reply as we had no idea what 'PM' meant!!

We have now been told it's a Personal Message.

Good to have that clarified!

However, we have thought about this & we have decided that we do still prefer to keep things in the public domain - i.e. post all our queries at MudCat directly. Just our method of choice re communicating. We are sure you understand.

So if you'd like to contact us again please do send us a message via MudCat.org.

It would be great if you could help.

Regards

M.W.

Hi topsie

Thanks for that. Your comment is duly acknowledged.

However, we ourselves prefer to keep things in the public domain - as in giving out our email address we would of course be disclosing private info. to total strangers! Anything we say on this website should be readable by anyone. So we'll post FolkieDave directly.

Thanks again

Regards

M.W.

PM = Personal Message

You can use them to exchange contact details that you wouldn't want to put on a website that any Tom Dick or Harriet can look at - again, for obvious safety reasons.

Hi topsie

Thanks for your message.

[ - and to everyone else - thanks for all your helful messages too!! ]

Re your suggestion, I am already a member - I just wasn't logged in when I posted the last comment on 01 Oct 09! Thanks for reminding me!

Re other message from 'FolkieDave': we didn't understand what 'PM' means, so we ignored the message.

We prefer to keep all contact directly within the public forum, for obvious safety reasons.

If 'FolkieDave' can explain what it means, we'll contact him through the forum.

Thanks all!

It is possible that a folksong could date from before 1700 and not have any negative connotations.
MW, why don't you join mudcat and take up FolkieDave's offer. (He does have very good Catalan connections.)

Sorry.

I've got these fingers on my hands!

Just chucking in a little knowledge in a very dangerous way.

Montjuic has not been a popular place in Barcelona in history. The castle on Montjuic and the Ciutadella at the other side of the city were built to control the population in the 1700s.

So I'm not convinced a Catalan folk song would be praising the beauty of Montjuic.

Although Catalan humour is pretty damn good at irony. And Toilets.

This is fascinating, and as I say, I have little knowledge, but would love to hear this song.

Cheers,

QTWF

Bad news. She says "I asked when you emailed me and I came up to the same conclusion as yours. Google is a traitor, lol. Those I asked didn't know anything either. Sorry"
I've emailed someone from Barcelona, maybe I get something...

Hi Monique

Thanks for the rough translation of the lyrics. That sounds as if it about the right translation, but rather oddly, as I heard the song 20-years ago, I seem to remember the gist/the sound of the Catalan lyrics rather than what they meant! Some songs DO stick in the mind somewhat, I suppose!

Yes, it would be great if you could check with your friends after the summer. I remember my relatives always made an exodus from the city (Barcelona) to the mountains, for the whole summer, due to the lovely hot weather! Oh if it were only that hot here in England!!

Many thanks

M.W.

Hi Q

Thanks very much for the info re Britten's 'Catalan Suite' "Montjuich" (1937). That was great. I didn't know B.B. had written such a suite!

I have now looked at this piece and heard samples at Amazon.co.uk, and as I thought it might be, this B.B. composition IS an instrumental piece. So that's not the one.

I am fairly sure the song I am after is an old folk song. I will keep on hunting! . . . !

Thanks again

M.W.

Gràcies a tots!

M.W. [britànic: resident a Anglaterra]

Benjamin Britten wrote a suite of Catalan dances, one was "Mont Juic."
Will try and find the original.

Hi MudCat users!

A long time ago in the 1980s a Catalan relative sang to me an old local (Catalan? or Basque?) folk song. I am now looking for the full lyrics of this song, & even an mp3 (etc.) of the song. Can anyone help?

I remember little about the song except that at the time we were standing on Montjuïc a.k.a. Mont Juic (a mountain just outside the city of Barcelona in Catalunya a.k.a. Catalonia), on the funicular railway, which is why she sang the song to me. The song included the lyrics - only ROUGHLY spelt here i.e. spelt in a PHONETIC style as an English person who didn't speak Catalan would hear them! - 'Ah Mont Juic, ah Mont Juic, to trobben tuney tu tom ah tambonic'.

That is all I can remember of the song!

I have Googled like crazy to find the real & full lyrics for this old song, ditto at YouTube but can find NOTHING!

Can anyone help?

Thanks all!

M.W.
