Subject: Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff live CD From: banjoschmanjo Date: 30 Jul 09 - 04:52 AM Not sure how many are familiar with Al Stewart (Year of the Cat, Time Passages, On The Border), but he has a new live CD coming out with Dave Nachmanoff, a singer songwriter and guitarist from California. They opted not to do the obvious tunes: Here's the tracklist: 1. Last Days of the Century/Constantinople/Last Days (Medley) 2. Coldest Winter 3. Warren Harding 4. News From Spain 5. Bed-sitter Images 6. Midas Shadow 7. Running Man 8. Palace of Versailles 9. Auctioning Dave 10. Princess Olivia 11. Life In Dark Water 12. Carol 13. Old Admirals You can pre-order and find more information at http://www.davenach.com . |
Subject: RE: Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff live CD From: Nicholas Waller Date: 30 Jul 09 - 07:55 AM He's apparently been a bit sniffy about some of his earliest work - say, his first four albums (all of which I like, except for much of Love Chronicles) - but I see he has Bed-sitter Images from his first album (of the same name) and News From Spain from Orange, his fourth. And a few other songs come from albums before his best-selling Year of the Cat in 1976: Old Admirals, Carol, and Warren Harding. A couple, like Auctioning Dave and Princess Olivia, I haven't heard of before. |
Subject: RE: Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff live CD From: Eric the Viking Date: 30 Jul 09 - 02:25 PM Always liked Al stewart since I saw him in London when he was starting out and have most of his music. I met him a few times. This looks to be quite a good selection. I have his early stuff which I am really fond of and once got him to play Ivinch for me the last time I saw him in 1998 (Gosh, Ten years !) The last album I got was Beach full of shells. I'll probably get this to see how he's re-worked the originals. |
Subject: RE: Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff live CD From: Nicholas Waller Date: 30 Jul 09 - 05:00 PM My brother used to see him back in the late 60s in Bristol at the Troubadour when he (my brother) was a student and occasional floor singer (see here for a report on what it was like there in those days. He prefers the earlier albums pre-Year Of The Cat, especially the first four from that late-60s era. Some later ones he has heard a couple or a few times and then rather given up on. But he finds he's played the most recent original one, Ancient Light, a lot... some kind of return to form. |
Subject: RE: Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff live CD From: Acorn4 Date: 30 Jul 09 - 06:22 PM I prefer his earlier albums, especially "Zero She Flies". There were a couple of incredibly good guitar instrumentals on that album as well, "Burbling" and "Room of Roots". |
Subject: RE: Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff live CD From: Will Fly Date: 31 Jul 09 - 03:18 AM Al was often to be found behind the bar at the Cousins all-niters, serving coffee and taking the piss in the 60s. Last time I saw him live was opening for the Incredible String Band at the old Free Trades Hall in Manchester around '66 or '67. He opened up with a great fingerstyle version of "Lullaby of Birdland". His later albums I found rather bland - it'll be interesting to check out this latest one. |

He's a SUPERB songwriter and singer. You're sure to enjoy anything he produces. Congratulations Dave and Al. Best regards, Ray Frank |
