We will be staying,en route to the Moira Furnace inaugural Festival,in a village between Ashbourne & Buxton, 18th,19th & 20th of August------are there any clubs or pub sessions in that area around that time ??

bubblyrat,the fishpond in matlock is apperently a cracking folk venue. so it might be worth having a look on their web site.

i don't know of anymore but it might be worth listening to mick petes' radio show folk waves on bbc radio derby. they do a wonderfull gig guide. it only does it for the week but it might give you ideas for venues.

None of these are particularly close to Ashbourne or Buxton, but they're in Derbyshire:

The Barrel, Breton. Sessions on Wednesday evenings.
Three Stags Heads, Wardlow Mires. Sessions from time to time at weekends.
The Anchor, near Tideswell. Not too sure, but there used to be Friday sessions some time back.

If you can you be more specific as to where you're staying I may be able to help further. I'm hoping to be at Moira Furnace too.

The Barley Mow pub in the village of Bonsall, near Matlock, has an informal folk session every Friday night. See the pub's website.

The Real Music Club in Willington (just off the A38 to the south of Derby) is every Thursday, though it's more 'open mic' than trad folk. It alternates between the Rising Sun and Green Man pubs, just across the road from the railway station.

Folkwaves is on BBC Radio Derby 7-9pm every Monday (also online and on the iplayer) and their gig guide covers the whole of the Midlands for the forthcoming week.

Belper Folk Club (Old Kings Head, Days Lane) and Spondon Folk Club (The Vernon Arms, Locko Road) both on Tuesday.
Ilkeston Folk Club (Rugby Club, Hallam Fields Road) Wednesday

bit of a treck from Parwich but they are running through the summer.

Nothing to do with folk venues, but I was in Derbyshire last week for a wedding in the village on Matlock. It has the best antique shop I've ever been in, on the high street. Really cheap, beautiful old stuff, with some good vintage clothes and books. Well worth a look if you've got a van and are in the market for any new old furniture.

It also had a fair few instruments tucked away in corners. Lots of acoustic guitars, a very playable mandolin, an old banjolele, a zither and a few bits of percussion. All at very reasonable prices. I had to hold myself back, as I really can't be buying any more instruments.

Matlock's a very pretty town anyway - well worth a visit. Anyway, that's my top tip...

What about the Edale Folk Train? I hear from friends that it's a hoot (pity it's not a whistle, but you can't have everything).

Cromford has a session in the Bell, alternate Tuesdays, next one be the 18th.

Also the Cliff Inn at Crich has a cracking session every Sunday.

If you drop down the Via Gellia (A5012) towards Cromford, call in for a cuppa. (Or if you're REALLY unlucky, a sample of my latest home brew!)

If its the one I'm thinking about, it used to have the ropiest selection of musical rubbish I've seen this side of the junk shop. If it isn't, exactly where is it? Is it the one with the "U" shaped glazed entrance?
