I just reinstalled my vista OS (premium home edition) and I don't know if I lost features or just brain cells. How how I search my local drives for for instance, everything file with adobe in it's name, or all jpgs It should be easy and I should know but... here I am asking for HELP!

I would recommend that you ignore any inbuilt Microsoft feature and look at this programme - indexyourfiles.
It doesn't install anything on your computer, but runs from a folder without making any changes to your registry, or anything else.
When you run it, it allows you to select which drives to index, then fairly rapidly builds a database of files present. Once that is complete, it can find files by name, date, file type (MP3, .jpg etc), It will also search for text within documents. Once files are listed, there are a range of previews - a music player / text reader / picture viewer built into the programme.
As it works from a database, it only finds files there at the time of indexing, not new ones addes at a later time, but running a new index is so quick it is not a problem.
Quack!
Geoff the Duck.

I use Picassa when I have to look for something and I simply can't remember where I saw it last. It does a nice job of pulling thumbnails into one place and I can scan the collection.

Sorry to hear you're using Vista Home. My condolences. ;-)

Open an Explorer window and type what you're after into the Search box at the top right of the screen. You might want to make sure that you're at the top level (usually your name) of your user filestore.

You can also often find a lot of stuff by just typing your search term (adobe, say, or jpg) into the text area on the bottom of the main menu.
