Subject: BS: Foreign Students Banned In UK Shop From: Amergin Date: 03 Aug 09 - 06:11 PM Apparently, the owner of some furniture shop in England decided to ban foreign students from his premises. He claims they would come in and create messes with their food and drinks....so instead of banning the food and drinks, he bans the students....Personally, this makes no sense to me...How many kids do you know who like to hang out in furniture stores all day? I know I never did.... Foreign Students Banned From Shop |

Subject: RE: BS: Foreign Students Banned In UK Shop From: Boho Date: 04 Aug 09 - 08:31 AM You see quite a few teenagers hanging out in IKEA in Hong Kong after school. Guess they don't have much room at home and IKEA has comfy sofas to sit on. |
Subject: RE: BS: Foreign Students Banned In UK Shop From: DougR Date: 04 Aug 09 - 06:34 PM He owns the shop. I suppose he can ban whoever he pleases. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: Foreign Students Banned In UK Shop From: Gurney Date: 04 Aug 09 - 10:12 PM Seems likely the shop is next to a takaway place where they can't eat 'in.' They are not, after all, banning foreigners, just non-customers. Try taking YOUR sandwitches to eat in McDonalds tomorrow lunchtime, and see how welcome you are. |

Subject: RE: BS: Foreign Students Banned In UK Shop From: Will Fly Date: 05 Aug 09 - 05:46 AM I work in Eastbourne, and I know the shop. There's a good reason why he's put the notice up - because he gets students from language schools buying their fast food at shops nearby and going in his store to sit down and eat it. However, the way he's phrased it seems rather stupid to me. All he has to say is, "No food or drink to be brought into these premises" or something to that effect. Like much of tourism, the influx of teenagers to the town to attend foreign language schools (and there are lots of them) brings both money and problems. Towns like Eastbourne don't always know to deal with this. The university area, where I work, gets complaints about the occasional behaviour of some students - mainly from retired residents who conveniently forget that, after tourism, students bring in most of the town's revenue. |
Subject: RE: BS: Foreign Students Banned In UK Shop From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 05 Aug 09 - 07:02 AM ..I have heard anecdotal evidence (which is usually unreliable!) from people in sweet and souvenitr shops that French school parties indulge in mass shoplifting but I've not heard of them targetting furniture stores! RtS (Sofa,so good, I think we've got away with it) |

Subject: RE: BS: Foreign Students Banned In UK Shop From: Lox Date: 06 Aug 09 - 05:51 AM I had intended to table a motion ... ... but when it came to furnishing it with evidence ... ... he discovered it was just a hot-bed of lies ... Apparently the shop keeper had intended to chase them down the street, but he isn't very fit and he was afraid they might make the chaise longue ... and he simply didn't have the meuble-ility ... ... apparently some of the female students were holding parties with male strippers ... ... and he didn't approve of chippendales ... ok ok ... I'll go ... |
Subject: RE: BS: Foreign Students Banned In UK Shop From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 06 Aug 09 - 06:30 AM The man is a FOOL. If the notice simply said "NO STUDENTS" it would have served his purpose, and nobody could have objected. The word "foreign" brings race issues to bear. VERY DUMB! Don T. |
