It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Jim sadly lost his battle with his health problems and on Sunday the second of August at 10.30 pm with his wife at his side took the hand of Jesus and peacefully slipped away. condolences can be passed on to the family by e-mail at [e-mail]. A kind,Passionate,wonderful big hearted man that has left a huge hole in all our lives.Johnathan

He will be missed by all that knew him, his recent appearances at the Vaults in Stony Stratford were stunning, although he was in poor health his love of the tradition shone through

Another good 'un gone. I remember seing Jim 25 years ago in Suffolk; a great gentlre bear of a man lugging what looked like a barn door around with him, yet producing the most wonderful music with it.

I am very saddened by this - Jim was a regular guest at Swinton until his health problems prevented much travel. Always a gentleman with a massive talent. I remember well his poignant song about a Mexican loosing his family fortune on the outcome of a cockfight - Can't remember the title. Jim had a good laugh when some wag asked him to do 'the Mexican chicken song'. It was never the same again:-)

I was shocked & saddened to hear if Jims death after a friend read about it here on Mudcat. I had always been aware of his health problems, but he just kept fighting.
Jim was a great friend & a huge influence on my life. It was Jim that introduced me to the hammered dulcimer 18 years ago, who taught me in the early days & his music contiues to influence & inspire me even now. I'm just sorry that I hadn't kept in closer touch over recent years.
I remember when I married for the first time, Jim was at the wedding, legs in bandages, on crutches to play for the service. He had called me 2 days before to say that he may not be able to make it as he was due to go into hospital but was so determined not to let me down. It meant the world to me to have him there & I have never forgotten it. I still have photo's of us both playing at the reception, me in a huge frilly dress, completely oblivious to all the people around us. It was such a joy to play with him.
I'll never forget everything he did for me, the support, encouragement, inspiration, mince pies, food fights!......
RIP Jim - you'll never be forgotten. x

I have listened to and been influenced by the big mans music since we met in London more than 20 years ago. I was once on a boating trip on the upper Thames and fell on a medieval fair on Wallingford common and heard his wonderful music coming over the field. I knew it was him and sought him out, to find him in doublet and hose entertaining the natives.
Another great loss, although his music will surely live on.

Very sad to hear this. I remember Jim from the days of the Antelope Folk Club in Wareham.

As he began to play he stopped and said something along the lines of "I'll just let the music fill the room " and it did.

Jim and I played at the International Garden Festival in Stoke on Trent many years ago. Just the two of us surrounded by flowers and people who had never come across folk music before, let alone in a garden. I remember Jim Lloyd coming round to 'check up' on us and found us sitting there singing Dr Price. He was not amused and we got roundly told off! A lovely man who managed to drink the rainbow of my homemade wine inside a week and still stand up. He will be missed

I never got to see Jim, but I did get to see Maclaine Colsten playing Hammered Dulcimer at Faldingworth.
Jim has left a very talented man to carry on the tradition of playing the hammered dulcimer.

When I first moved to Wales in the early 80's I looked out the local folk Club, Llantrisant. I innocently thought "well no-one knows me here so I can try out my new hammer dulcimer on them". Lo and behold, second night there, in walked Jim, he was a regular and lived only down the road. Happy days.

I can't say that I knew him, but saw him many times over the years. He was responsible for one of the nicest nights I've ever had in a folk club - at the Bracknell club he did a night where his much of his set was prompted by random thoughts, connections and some remarks from the audience. I remember it included I'll See You In C.U.B.A. (Bing Crosby in Blue Skies), the (longish) chorus of which he had the whole cellar singing.

A sad loss of a great musician.

I first saw Jim in the 70's in the Gosport & Portsmouth area and I think he was the first person I had seen playing a hammer dulcimer. He was absolutely amazing both then and on subsequent occasions I was lucky enough to see him. Thanks for the music Jim, rest peacefully now.

I remember Jim from the Tryworks coffee house in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a fine singer, one of the very best Hammer Dulcimer players, and a great guy. Never got to see him on this side of the pond but I know there will be many back in New England who will be saddened by his passing.

I for one had a great fondness for Jim and his music. I would show up for Howard Glasser's Eisdteddfod's and ceilidhs in the early seventies, more often as guest than performer in those days, and Jim's house would often be the place we cold party for the night and sing to our heart's content. There was always a heap of body's sprawled on the floor the next morning. Later, our paths would cross at the University of Pennsylvania, where we both studied folklore. By then, he had an interest in the music of Pennsylvania. He moved to England and we lost touch with each other-- but I wil remember him always as a fine hammer dulcimer player, a strong singer with an interesting repertoire, and a great host!

First saw Jim at the National Festival, Sutton Bonnington around 1988 and not long after that in the much more intimate surroundings of the Oddfellows Arms at Kegworth where he did an exceptional night.

Oh no, not another one.

Jim was tagged as being 'the giant of the hammered dulcimer' - an obvious cliche for a large man.
I first met him in the mid 80s I think, and we forged a professional relationship which led to recording his meisterwork, Jubilee in 1989. I later recorded Out of the Shadowland and his biggest seller - Welcome to the Fair. This was done because he needed something to sell at the Mediaval fairs that he did (when he dressed up in doublet and hose as a minstrel). What started out as a throwaway item (and was recorded all in one day), went on to become a massive seller, to Jim's surprise and joy!

During all that time, we became firm friends and I found him to be a 'giant of a man'. There were legion stories about Jim Couza - mostly centring around his somewhat brash American demeanour - but I found him to be a kind, gentle and compassionate human being underneath the exterior. And when I had troubles of my own, he was one of the few true friends who stepped up to the mark.

I last saw him in person a year ago at Warwick Folk Festival, where he had a whale of a time getting back to the playing he loved. I last spoke to him earlier this year, when he was in very buoyant mood, and was talking about doing more gigs, and even starting a new album project. This from a man who had had both legs amputated and untold health problems. But he never lost his sense of humour and joy of living. I remember us joking after the first amputation - he had taken up going to the gym to try and keep fit, and was doing 10 miles a day on his exercise bike. All the old jokes about the one legged cyclist came out. After the second amputation, I asked him what he was going to do. He said, "Oh, they've fixed me up with a rowing machine, so I don't need the Goddam legs for that!"
I've never known a person remain so positive under such adversity, and he will always be a true inspiration to me.

I had no idea that things had taken a turn for the worse, and was shocked to read here that he had passed on.

I will truly miss him, and my thoughts go out to Karen.

I'm A Walt Michael man myself,but Jim came a pretty close second as a hammered dulcimer player & singer.I remember fondly seeing him at a Country Fair at Kingston Lacey in Dorset a few years back,in his "Cripple in a Hovel" guise,complete with fly on his nose and wooden crutches---somewhat ironic ,really.Having busted a string,he took out his roll of piano -wire,& asked for some cutters----I was priveleged to lend him my "Leatherman" !!

I knew Jim from way back, His heart was as big as his frame, it saddens me that it has given out on him, and yet another light has been dimmed in this Folk World of ours.
We all remember the Lochabie Disaster, Jim performed at that mammoth
event, Scottish Television put out a short recording of it late one night, and there of course was the lad, and he sang what i know as "St. Pauls Song" it was highly evocative, emotional and a very very moving tribute to the victims, and their bereaved. I hope someone can do the same for him.

I think of Jim every Christmas time as his rendition of "Brightest and Best", one of my wife's favoutites, is always played on the Manx Folk program.

He used to come to the Cheddar folk club quite often and was always welcome there.
I don't know whether his timing was planned or sheer coincidence (it would match his sense of humour) but on two separate occasions he entered the room while the song "Barrat's privateers" was being sung just as the line "when a great big Yankee hove in view" was reached.

He certainly inspired me to try out the hammered dulcimer, and in another life with more time in it you never know...

Jim played our club in the eighties Blind Jacks at Knaresborough a wonderful night. He stayed at our house, we heard he had a spectaculer appetite so we filled the fridge but he was on a diet and had only had a slice of toast and marmite.But I remember most him playing his hammer dulcimer in the open at Whitby on the East Side by the swing bridge he had to give up because the hundres listening were stopping the traffic.

My sister Karen and I have just returned from the undertakers and she has asked me to invite as many people that Jim knew to his funeral and a wild celebration of his of his life party after, on the 22 nd of August 2009 . The sevice will be held in the Methodist church that he attended in Whitchurch Buckinghamshire hp22 4jd at 11 am, we arranged it to be as late as possible to enable people to travel .The celebration party afterwards will be just around the corner at his home at 3 Castle Lane.
The one thing that worried Jim was that his funeral would be a very small affair with only a few people attending .SO LETS PROVE HIM WRONG for the first time ever! Please could you pass this information on to as many of Jims friends as possible as Karen is not sure she has everyone's contact details . Here's a YouTube clip of him playing and talking about his dulcimer.

What I always found so amazing was that the fact he had to sit so far back from the instrument because of his size never got in the way of his playing.

And I'm glad people here remembered his singing as well as his playing.

I met Big Jim in 1969 when the late Alan Soares first brought me to the Tryworks Coffeehouse in New Bedford, MA. Jim was one of the leading performers there and his enthusiasm for traditional music was great even then. That he went on to forge such an impressive career playing the hammered dulcimer was a source of great wonder to his old Tryworks friends - we were there when he started! And that he made so many friends throughout the UK and Europe is a testament to his wonderful talent and personality. He was larger-than-life in every way and he made the world a better place with his music. Roll on, buddy.

Jim will certainly be missed on the folk scene, so soon after Johnny Collins going as well. Have seen him many times at clubs and festivals but the one that sticks in my memory was at the The Birmingham Traditional Music club (BTMC) back before the beginning of time (when Dave James was a golden haired youth).

It was Christmas and Jim did a grand night dressed as Father Christmas, he also gave out the presents to the children (pinching Eric Jackson's job). It was a great night.

Well done Jim yours was a fine life bringing joy and happiness to everyone you met (except those you rubbed up the wrong way - but that's their problem not yours)

Mary and I learned of Jim's death today and have to say it leaves us very sad. I was lucky enough to have a regular seat next to Jim at the Vaults bar session in Stony Stratford every Sunday, and felt privileged when he allowed me to play percussion on some of his tunes. I remember the first time he played 'Friends and Neighbours' –it literally had me in tears. I was lucky enough to get hold of a pristine copy of the album on EBay and copied it to CD for him, but unfortunately, it's still in my instrument case.

What can I say? The man really was a legend and I'm so happy that I had the honour to work with him and record with him over the years. some of my most memorable festival concerts were with Jim and I will take many happy memories with me of our times together.

So sad to hear of Jim's passing, we only knew him in recent years through sharing tunes in the Vaults Bar on a Sunday afternoon. It was a rare privilege to play with and listen to such a gifted man. Jim played our Cartwheel club circa 1985. A great evening from the gentle giant. After the club we took him to a Sheffield takeaway where while we were waiting a few late night "tough guys" came in showing off in drink. I was worried that they might pick on Jim with his rather unusual appearance and his accent but none of it, he engaged them with charm and wit and we all had a great laugh.

It was the only time I met him but what a very nice guy.

Yes, another sad loss.

He would have been a highly respected performer if he had just sung his lovely songs to his nicely apposite guitar accompaniment
But to have played that amazing dulcimer, as well........

He certainly had a large appetite. Some friends who ran a folk-club in London put him up after a gig. They had to leave early in the morning for work, so told him to sleep in and help himself to the ample fridge contents. When they arrived home in the evening, the fridge was bare. But he was such a lovely man, they deemed it an honour.

I heard this morning and I must admit I'm devastated.

I first met Jim many years ago when he was a guest at Matt Armour's folk club, The Song Loft. In recent years we became good friends when he started to appear regularly at Matt's Folk Workshop on a Sunday lunchtime at The Vaults, Stony Stratford. He was always very complimentary about my music and we had planned to work together sometime... we shared very similar tastes in song (good, well written ones!).

Jim was an extremely knowledgeable man and I loved his stories of '60s American folk revival people he knew well - a lot of them my heroes.

Strange, we had arranged that I was to visit him at home on the 22nd... so, Karen, please count me in - it will just be particularly poignant for me that I would have been there anyway and we would have been doing some music together.

So sad: Matt, Johnny and now Jim plus so many other friends and family gone this year - there must be a fantastic session going on somewhere!

I first met Jim when he was a mature student at Philadephia University's folklife department. Jim was interviewing us for the university's radio station, and we immediately hit it off. Jim introduced us to Koch's Sandwich Bar, a tiny place where you had to queue up - but the Koch brothers served up these mouthwatering, mega-gigantic sandwiches, which were two meals in themselves!

Jim later came to South Wales, and was a Llantrisant Folk Club regular musician. He shared a flat with Siwsann George and Stuart Brown (of Mabsant.) He later moved to England, and I had several useful rehearsals with him at his house in the West Country. Jim moved back to Bristol, where he met Karen, and Pat and I celebrated their wedding.

Much later, Jim was in a wheelchair and Llantrisant Folk Club wanted to give him a gig. Jim and Karen, Arts Council Wales officer John Prior and his wife squeezed into my tiny flat for dinner, while Amazing bluegrass guitarist and banjo player Chris Morton turned up with another famous US musician, and the two of them jammed with Jim - what a fabulous night.

Thank you, Jim - you have enriched our lives with your stunning, knowedgeable repertoire, your rich voice and your jawdropping playing. Rest in peace, friend.

I first met the Big Guy in Bath on the Promenade in '85. I was out with my 4 year old stepson Robert, and I heard this wonderful music dancing through the air.

We walked up to this rather LARGE chap and he was playing fiddle tunes on his dulcimer. When he stopped, I introduced myself and the young fella, and explained I'd just arrived from Canada, and I played guitar, and did he know St Anne's Reel? For the next 10 minutes or so, I stood there listening to more variations of St Anne's Reel than ten Cape Breton fiddlers could improvise in a year, right there on the spot.

I asked where he was from "Philly" came the answer, "Where you from?" "Nova Scotia" "Oh...well ya know St Anne's Reel ain't from Nova Scotia...nope...'sfrom Prince Edward Island"
I had tapped into the encyclopaedic catalogue of music Jim carried around with him. I walked away from Jim and said to Robert " Boy, I'd love to play with that guy". Little did I know......

I met him again in late 1990, at Mike Burton's place in Martock. Mike, Jim, and Dave Hatfield were getting together to rehearse their material - they played out as The D'Urberville Ramblers -
I don't think he recognised me at the time, and we started playing. It all seemed to fall into place well enough that they invited me to join them for the Haddenham Festival in Dec that year.

We played together as a trio until 1994, at festivals and folk clubs. We had Pete Stanley, Brian Golby, at Feet First. We had Chris Moreton and Johnny Butten at Cambridge in '93. What a ride!

Four things about playing with Jim-
1) expect to wing it! The set list can disappear pretty quick
2) there is only one major tempo - light speed! If you couldn't keep up don't play loud and don't get in the way!
3) play from the heart - cause when the pins hitting the floor start to sound real loud, you know ya got em.
4) if ya don't know the tune, fake it real good!

During those years we forged a friendship that was worth every second...good & bad alike. And it was the sort where absences were irrelevant. We would be in contact once a year whether we needed it or not, and occasionally got together for the odd gig.

Our last gig together was in 2007 at a benefit for Cardiac Rehab here in Wellington. He met my local friends and compadres, and had a whale of a time telling tall tales and taking us all on a musical journey through heaven that only he could construct out of his own spontaneity, and boyish joy.

His health had been a very major issue for him ever since we first met, and often I would get a call and go visit him in hospital. and he did the same when it was my turn at the BRI a few years back.

The plain simple fact of Jim is - he was a gifted man, when he played and sang you were hearing the tempos of the hearts of angels and clowns. His sense of the poignant appeared in "Cranes Over Hiroshima", his wicked sense of humour in "You Ain't Talkin't' Me" or "I'da Writ you a Letter but I couldn' spell......brrrrrrrrrrr", or his sense of family in Steve Goodman's "My Old Man", or finally his sense of the Almighty in "St Paul's Song".

We all were blessed by his music and his passion for life. I am sad that his life ended so soon, I'm sure we could've listened to another set.......I will miss Jim, he was a friend of mine,

Durham Folk Festival 1985. Jim was stunning; probably my first live encounter with a hammer dulcimer - an overwhelming experience that hearing recorded music just didn't prepare you for. Sunday evening, heavy rain, standing at a roundabout trying to thumb a lift home, it was Jim who stopped for this (then) complete stranger, and took me all the way to Sheffield. Just another mark of his generousity to add to the long list.

Met Jim thru my brother @ Bob Beer's Fox Hollow F.F.
He'd been to my house in Penna. We were with him in Mass. the weekend
before the activated reservist went off to 'Nam in the USN.Many great times w/ impromptu house concerts (I'd call in my friends). Until her bed-time,he'd theme his music @ my 5 yr.old daughter,after which it could get racier.
I'll not forget the time he ran across a shoe outlet that had his size
(just short of canal boat) & he went overboard & Igave him $$ to get back to Philly.Early 70's he nursed his Chevy down to Philly from Mass.It ran poorly & thirstily. I cleaned up the spark plugs,Jim wasn't mechanical.

Thank you, Ray - Jim always told he had been a reservist in Vietnam, surviving firefights and unspeakable horrors of war, and as soon as he got back he started eating uncontrollably until he grew to the size he was then. There are many stories of Jim demolishing the fridge - thank God that 'Nam made him a compulsive eater instead of delivering him back home in a box.

celebration of his of his life party after, on the 22 nd of August 2009 .
The sevice will be held in the Methodist church that he attended in
Whitchurch Buckinghamshire hp22 4jd at 11 am, we arranged it to be as late
as possible to enable people to travel .The celebration party afterwards
will be just around the corner at his home at 3 Castle Lane.
The one thing that worried Jim was that his funeral would be a very small

I just return from vacation to learn about Jim's passing. Jim and I performed together, doing the Massachusetts coffeehouse scene, especially at our musical home, Tryworks and at the Eisteddfodd in the mid '70s. Making music with him was great and got me through a very difficult time in my life, giving me the confidence I needed to rebuild my life. I will always remember rowing around the Westport River, developing our arrangement of Alasdair Clayre's Easy Flowing River. I still sing it. I regret not keeping up with him when he moved to England. Thanks, Jim, for those good times.

We have lovely memories of Jim at the Walton on Naze Festival, one night he was the main guest, we had done the raffle and Barry from Skinners Rats had thrown the tickets all over the dance floor. Jim started his set on stage when the very elderly " pot boy" walked slowly onto the dance floor with a huge broom and swept up the tickets, Jim carried on playing and at the end made a comment and brought the house down.Next day he was busking on the seafront with a huge crowd round him.One of the nicest men, good humoured and a joy to know.

Jim was a terrific musician, but I particularly admired his singing, which came straight from the heart and could be almost unbearably moving. He loved playing so much that it was sometimes difficult to get him off the stage, but I have a fond memory of following him at a festival (my own spot having been delayed by a minute or two!), breaking a string in my first song, and seeing Jim - by this time at the back of the hall - unpack his own guitar and come running up the aisle with it for me to play.

I hadn't seen him in some years, but I'm glad he'd enjoyed a musical come-back despite terrible adversity, and have enjoyed reading the tributes here.

I heard the sad news whilst on holiday when I bumped into Maclaine. Jim was such an inspiration in not only how he played but how he viewed life. With so many challenges he had to overcome in recent years he never lost his faith in what he could achieve. Our band played at his wedding and then at his mother in laws Golden Wedding. Playing hammered dulcimer like I do, in front of someone with Jims ability could be nerve racking but he made me feel very relaxed and he wanted to pass on as many tips as he could. My very best wishes go to Karen and her and Jims family. With great regret I wont be able to attend the funeral.

I will be forever in Jim Couza's debt - he is the person primarily responsible for everyone who recorded and/or sand my song "Sailor's Prayer" in the 1970s and early 1980s. Days after I wrote the song, Jim learned it from me and then everyone else learned it from him. He was a very nice man - I only met him once but I will never forget him and how he affected my life and so many others.

Not only was Jim a wonderfully talented musician but also a suburb actor. To see him dashing out of an exploding privy in a pair of long johns twice a day at weekends was a joy to behold. Very sad to hear of Jim's passing. I have very fond memories of being on the same bill as him at a couple of festivals many years ago, at Towersey and Chippenhan, I think.Iwas young and very nervous and Jim was very warm, kind,encouraging and supportive. He had a knack of saying just the right thing at the right time. I can remember thinking at the time the folk music scene is for me if everyone is as nice as this big guy. Sincere condolences.

Jim, larger than life, was very generous to me at a time I was (and still am ) learning my craft and I think we took great pleasure in buying each other a drink on a Sunday Lunch time in Teh Vaults Bar.

I remember, 2008 he played at StonyLive, and he was in his element. Each song he sang was inspired from the previous, and memories and stories he was recounting. constantly changed the set list. It was wonderful to watch listen and learn.

I am so sad I can't be there today, but I am doing the thing that Jim always said I should and playing my Banjo. I'll play a few for you Jim.

I only heard last week, I know Jim had not been in the best of health but it still came as a terrible shock. I had the pleasure of knowing Jim for many years and all what the above have said about him I endorse without reservation. The last time I saw at the local folk club I went along and joined him on some of the numbers we had recorded together. Afterwards he stayed at our house and I recall he took home some of Sandi's Marmalade with him. I also very much enjoyed working with Jim on 2 of his albums and still play them often. Our sincere condolences and love to Karen and family.

I only heard tonight - couldn't believe it when I heard Mike Harding say "the late Jim Couza". I first heard him playing years ago at Towersey festival & had to go out & buy a dulcimer. I was never much good at it, but I'm pleased to say that my son Rick appears to have what it takes (more than one pair of hands apparently). Jim's talent was prodigious,he was a dulcimer virtuoso, and I will never forget the song about roadkill that he did at Shrewsbury folk club.

We knew Jim way back when as a good friend at New Bedford Vocational High School 1961 thru 1965. He majored in Machine shop with me. He also played football and collected records and LP's. I do not recall Jim having musical talent then but we are happy to learn that found his calling. In 1982 when he first moved to England he wrote me and explained that he was playing an instrument similar to the French Horn. He was busy with "gigs" and playing with a large London orchestra. His singing and playing Chariots on his custom made hammered dulcimer is a wonderful tribute to his superior musical ingenuity and talent. May the Good Lord keep Jim in his care until we meet again. So so sorry we didn't get back to you sooner, bit of a communication cock up this end!!!!Every thing is organized for that date and the whole family is looking forward to a garden filled with music and laughter with everyone swapping memories of Jim and remembering him through the music that played such an important part of his life ….and I know that some where against that fantastic backdrop of friends and family a great man will be sitting next to each and every one of us shaking his head in disbelief that so many people still hold him in such high esteem that we have all got together again to celebrate his life.

Just googled Jim to find out what was happening and was saddened to hear of his departure. Heaven will be full of his amazing and beautiful playing, I don't doubt.

I have two battered copies of Brightest and Best and Jubilee, on vinyl as a real tribute to Jim could some one lovingly remaster them for CD I'd be first in line to buy.

Jim appeared several times at the Cambridge Folk Club and festival, must have been in tbe 1980s. First time I had really seen someone play the hammered dulcimer. A lovely chap. Still play his music. Just playing Jubilee.

What a coincidence. I didn't see the post in January but looked for anything on Jim as I am just playing Jubilee too! I have aquired a cassette to USB device and am busy digitising some old tapes, including Jubilee. What a splendid album it as and Jim was indeed a lovely man. Still sadly missed.
