Check your 'application settings' and 'added to profile'(drop down box). If you see one in there called "un named app" delete it... Its allegedly an internal spybot.

Pass it on...found it in mine - and I have deleted it several times!

The problem is the fake profiles created on facebook are being created by one or more people/ visitors or members of mudcat.

Pictures are being lifted from flickr and photobucket sites arrived at by links posted in mudcat threads. Mudcat and links to Myspace and other networking sites or blogs, personal websites make easy pickings.

I suspect it is a Mudcat visitor or member because s/he uses mudcat IDs and variations of them to create the fakes.

It is sick thing to do. And still being done to me, which is making me feel quite ill.

The person doing this is not mentally right and I think possibly not really a BNP supporter but just a sad little someone who gets his/her kicks hurting people.

Since I don't have first-hand knowledge of Facebook, the following may be considered "hearsay observations" pending your own confirmation or refuting.

While I'm a non-participant and have never registered with Facebook, it's impossible to miss reports that Facebook has made obscure, confusing, obstructive, and (some say) dangerous changes to security and privacy policies and settings at least, by my count, four times in the past few (6?) months.

Various media that I believe are trustworthy have published "how to protect your information" guides as each of these major changes have appeared.

Whlle I haven't seen the face book pages involved in settings recommended, it would seem that the necessary (what most people would want) settings required, for any of the recent changes, cannot be described in a page of instructions, much less in a paragraph.

As I haven't saved or bookmarked any of the articles I've seen, I would recommend that anyone with a Facebook account do an intelligent search for articles on "Facebook Security" and/or "Facebook Privacy." Ignore blog posts and/or "user feedbacks," and look for formal articles/reports from recognized publishers. Be very careful that instructions you choose to follow relate to the most recent changes at Facebook, if you can figure out which ones those are.

Most of the reports I've seen come from Ziff Davis Publishing, and may have included articles from PC Magazine, eWeek, ExTreme Tech, and/or others published by them. UK users might find a magazine called PC Advisor more accessible despite occasional (mild) hysteria and hype on some subjects.

Based on recent past performance, you may be assured that Facebook will "redesign" their site and will change their policies so that you will be forced to repeat this exercise approximately quarterly, so bookmarking sites that provide intelligible and useful advice on the subject for future reference is probably a good thing to do.

An example: According to reliable sources, at least one recent change made your account information, which probably includes your name, age, address, phone number and email address, publicly accessible (to those who know how to access them) unless you make changes to settings to declare them private. The required settings are, according to the reports, not visible in menus and unlikely to be found without someone to guide you to them. Further, one source asserts that the settings a "reasonable person" would expect to be most secure do, in fact, permit Facebook to sell access to your account information (to advertisers?) while the setting you need is described to make it appear less secure.

Another way to protect yourself on FaceBook is simply not to post much personal data on your profile page.

I see no reason to post my address, phone number, etc. there at all. People can contact me via a FB personal message or via an email address if they want to find out that stuff, and I can decide whom to share it with.   I didn't even give them exactly my right birthdate.   I put something close, but different enough that no one could use it for identity theft. And I set my page so that I'm the only one who can "see" that.

As for the other things I share on FB, they're not particulary private anyway, nor do they need to be.

Incidentally, my privacy settings were such that NOBODY should have had access to my E-Mail addy, or my Home Phone No.

Nonetheless, BOTH have been plastered across fake BNP profiles.

So, if you believe that Farcebook DOESN'T leak like a sieve, DREAM ON!

I didn't subscribe, Ken, until somebody told me that I was a Facebook member with a profile showing me as a BNP supporter.

When I tried to check on this I found that you can't view anything on Farcebook without being a member.

I had to join, even just to report this harrassment, so not being a member certainly is NO protection.

I have lost any chance of being booked, at least at one club, whose organiser said that, while HE sympathises, his patrons would not pay to listen to what they see as a racist bigot.

Ignoring it does not help, so you might as well be proactive and fight it.

And before anyone asks, NO, I will not name that organiser, or his club, because none of this is HIS fault, nor that of his members.

I recently discovered another method of restricting who can see what on Facebook.   You can set up sub-groups of FB friends, such as "Mudcat friends," "Family," "Business contacts," etc. Each your FB "friends" can be included in as many of those subgroups as you choose, or none.

When you "share" something on FaceBook, you can select whom you want to share it with: everyone, friends of friends, friends only, or "custom." If you select "custom," you can specify one person, a few people, or one (or more) sub-groups.   By choosing a sub-group, you avoid having to list each person separately. So, for example, if I want to share something with only my "radical communist leftist pinko friends," I can do that. Or if it's just for "family," I can also do that. Very convenient and useful for security.

Drongo, how recently? As of last month, I was getting ads with my friends pictures in them, telling me to check my IQ against theirs. Has that changed? I really didn't like that.

I posted ths on the other facebook thread but thought it might be more widely appreciated if I started a specific thread.

Here's what you do.

When you are logged on to facebook go through the following procedure to protect your pics, personal details etc.

1. Hover the mouse over "settings" and a drop down menu will come down.

2. Click on Privacy settings.

3. You will see a page with 4 blue clickies.

Click on the third line saying "News feed and wall"

4. You will see a new page with two tabs at the top

click on the right hand tab saying "facebook ads"

5. Scroll down and you will see various drop down menu's.

On each one select "no one"


This will make your info and photo's unavailable to be abused by advertisers etc.
