We're really looking forward to it (despite the weather forecast). Kids going to grandparents, van stocked up, instruments tuned, songs learned..... can't wait....... and 2 weeks in Scotland and 4 more gigs (+ seeing Eric Bogle at Dunkeld) before I have to back to the day job!

just 3 days to go!

Songs of Ironopolis ~ I believe is a performance of Graeme Miles songs not to be missed!!

I have in fact asked for my Yorkshire Heritage (Garland) songs presentation to be moved to 4.15 in Toc H so as not to clash with this event! (agreed with John and Paul)

The Ironopolis event starts at 5.45 in the Marine Hall (Sat)

My event is now in Toc H at 4.15 following The singer songwriters (there) and the Fred Competition (in the Conservative club)

Well done to all!

13 entrants the Fred Jordan Unaccompanied Trad Style competition this year 2009

Won by Vince Parker a Cumbrian by birth but local to Saltburn now

Thanks to judges Dave Howdon, Steve Robinson last years winner and of course my old friend (sorry Glen) Mr Glen Osborne

I must apologise for being a pain, car battery problems meant I had to call out the emrgency services 3 times ( no adverts on mudcat) but they were marvellous!! big yellow thingys

So once retarted (2 nd time) I went home on Sunday pm and missed the presentation, no doubt yer all managed and I wasnt missed!!

The entries again very high standard, I wont list them all but you who were there know these wonderful singers many of whom are or should be booked at your club or festival, I reckon

Please please ensure that you get a form filled in in good time before we do the running order and check out your eligibility in good time! apologies to Ann and John

Many thanks again heres to next year

Who won the singer songwriters??

Ray Padgett

NIce one again Mr John Taylor!!

A pat on the back from me to John Taylor for organising such a grand weekend.
Another for Vince for his victory in the singing comp.

Thanks to all who attended my 'Country Meets Folk' session, especially Bruno who showed us how a banjo should be played :-).
My apologies to any who couldnt get in the full room.

Met lots of friends & now waiting for next year.

Thanks again John

Vince's winning song was actually written by himself about his parents romance in Borrowdale, Cumbria. It was a lovely song!
Very nice festival although there were some disgruntled people around who couldn't get into the concerts they wanted. We took a couple of newbies along with us and they were ecstatic.
John was a happy man as everyone was leaving the campsite yesterday morning. (He was carting away the rubbish!) I hadn't seen him sit down all weekend - such is the festival organisers lot.

Now c'mon Mr Padgett - organising a prestigious competition like the Fred should mean you have more friends not few, and shouldn't stop you keeping a note of the winning song/s! We luv ya, Raymondo!

Glad you had a great weekend Sooz, sorry to've missed you.
Did Vince win the singer-songwriter competition as well then?
Or did you instead, Sooz (but modesty prevents you from mentioning it)?

Everyone is a winner David

It is the spirit of the songs, the humour, the tragedy, and the feelings engendered which are borne out of our humanity encapsulated in verse and set to sympathetic music

How the song is performed, rather than just sung is equally important

I couldn't agree more, Raymond - there was never any question about any of what you said, as it's the very same book I sing from!
Anyway, sorry I couldn't make it to the competition this year.

Hope to see you at Whitby, but no promises...
Now back up off that laptop!

MM

I'm on the lap top again David cant keep off

Guest above must have been the young lady Stewarding/Landlady at the Conservative club!

Must say that I as organiser of Fred Comp for many years, and having stayed there when John (not JT) was Steward found that the venue was cracking and most welcoming

Sandwiches and tea/coffe, crips not to mention the beer at resonable prices available "on tap" so to speak and excellent service

Hope to see you next year

An excellent festival.
The Cons Club got taken over
I am glad the Steward of the Club enjoyed it

Enjoyed the Ironopolis performance a good wallow in nostalgia and a good performance by the cast. The girls were outstanding.

I would have liked to go to Padgetts "do" as well but missed the timetable shift.

Loved the New rope string band a lesson in professionalism

Got involved in some excellent singarounds which says something about the people who go to festivals.

Never noticed much about the organisation of the whole thing which means it went smoothly and the organisers were on the ball.
So well done JT and all the team

Fantum

I agree the New Rope were brill, as were the Wilsons especially the sound they produced in the church, in fact the blend of guests throughout the weekend was great. Well done! to all involved.

Vince sang the song about Borrowdale last night at the Cutty Wren Folk Club (John Taylor's club). I hadn't heard it before. It's an excellent song. He coupled it with a song about a lamb's tale - very funny. Vince is a worthy winner. It was an excellent night at the club.

The winning song in the singer songwriter comp was called "Whispering Joe" written by a guy who lives in Newcastle. I'm afraid I'm not sure about his name, something like Michael Baxter/Baker but I could be off beam. He played a six string banjo tuned to standard guitar tuning. It was a song about a work colleague who was shortly to retire, gave up smoking at the request of his family and promptly died...sad but true. I know all this because I participated in the event myself. It was all very enjoyable with a good mix of ages & styles participating. Steve

A bit (almost one year) late, but thank you for mentioning me.
I felt very welcome and enjoyed every bit of it.
Great to be able to do the two opposites I love equally well, playing my note-for-note arrangements but also creating music out of thin air, while playing songs I'd never heard before with people I just met.
You can count on me this year (2010) again, for we'll come across the North Sea once more.

'We' are Heartstrings , we won't perform at the festival, for -as I understood- when we applied many, many years ago, our style was considered 'too american for a folk festival'.
We gave up trying, but as 'tourists' we're equally well at home, enough reason to come back again and again.

So hopefully seeing you in August,

Bruno
