I guess you could say he was educated far below his intelligence. Excellent command of the language, head full of interesting stuff and a life full of interesting people. I'm a history major so we never had a problem with something to discuss.

I didn't know the memorial would be taped so I hope my letter wasn't too sappy.

JOe, I am witness to the piles & shelves of (hardcover) books all over the house, as well as the fact that, every time I visited, he had, at least, 1 book open on the table in front of him. He read mostly nonfiction &, specifically, history. I am also witness to the fact that before I drove him to his last doctor's visit, he made sure we brought a book along & was concerned whether one would be enough. I do love that man.

At the memorial service, somebody mentioned Sandy's voracious reading habits. I thought he told me he read a book a day, but he said that wasn't so. Maybe it was a book a week. Anybody know how much he read?
I called him a "closet PhD" - a high school dropout, but one of the wisest people I have ever known.

Yes it was a very good gathering, and I thought it captured a little of Sandy Paton's beautiful spirit. Sharing memories and songs brings some peace.
For those of you who could not be there, next week Howard Glasser is holding a memorial at the Eisteddfod on Sunday morning (10/18)honoring Sandy and the other wonderful people who were associated with Eisteddfod whom we have lost. This year Eisteddfod will be in the Hudson Valley (info at http://www.eisteddfod-ny.org ). There is a schedule on the web site. Many of the Eisteddfod performers were also at the memorial.   We will hear more wonderful singing/playing.

Rest in peace and in joy, Sandy. We all loved you.

My wife Ruth and I had a beautiful time at the memorial. For me, it was wonderful seeing old friends like (but not an all inclusive list) Roy Harris, Harry Tuft, Bill Shute, Skip Gorman, Ed Trickett, Jennifer Woods and Bob Clayton, Bill Spence, Patricia Herdman, and several Catters. It was a special pleasure meeting Bill Schatz, Joe Offer and Nancy King. I could easily double that list, but others may add to it. Not all would be familiar names to Catters.

Caroline was as gracious and radiant as ever, and David Paton was warm and welcoming despite his "Summer of tears," as he so beautifully put it. The music was uniformally excellent and the testimonies were heartfelt and moving.

It was an experience I'll never forget. The recorded and video taped the whole thing. How wonderful if they made it available for purchase down the line.

I grew knowing the Patons quite well as a family friend from birth; their concerts were truly one of a kind, and their voices blended together beautifully in a soft melodic tone. They often visited us when in Southern CT and performed at my mom's elementary schools. The best part of their concerts was that they involved a great deal of audience participation. He was truly a great guy.

Thanks, folks. Kendall, your message was read by Caroline's sister during the memorial. I had already heard from Caroline that some of you others were under the weather. Hope you feel better soon! There was a good crowd at the memorial. Many folks who recorded for Folk Legacy took part in the memorial & there were multitudes of performers & music lovers in attendance. I hesitate to start listing names, because I know I'll leave folks out. Suffice it to say that we all came together through love of Sandy & out of support for Caroline. We all wiped away a tear, now & then, but there was laughter, too, & lots of great music, from the stage & singing along. I think Sandy would be pleased.

best,

Barbara

I was hoping to be there, but Micca's visiting and I got a flu shot on Thursday to which my immune system is seriously (over)reacting.

Sandy was such a Big Deal, but he didn't act like it. Professional, yes; too important to talk to folks, no. If it weren't for
Sandy, I wouldn't have known Rick and Heather Fielding. I likely wouldn't have joined Mudcat and met all the people I've met through this place. I wouldn't have gone to the FSGW Getaway or ever driven to Toronto or New Jersey just to talk and play with fellow musicians I'd never met before.

I don't believe anyone who knew Sandy at all will not miss him, but we're better off for having known him. Love, light, laughter, music and joy: when I remember Sandy, I'll feel those things.

Y'all give each other an extra hug for me.

My heart goes out to you all today. Unfortunately I, and now Charlie, are struggling with some sort of flu or bad cold. I had hoped to sing and do all in my power to honor my dear friend, adviser, co-field worker, intellectual sparring partner, and all around pal, Sandy Paton.
As for so many others, Sandy and Caroline made a home for me away from home. They taught me most of what I needed to know to start a record company, to interpret traditional songs, and to perform.

Even more than mourning him, I am filled with gratitude for having known him and wanted to share that with others who felt the same way.

So here's to you, Sandy-- I raise my glass in your honor.

I'm very disappointed that Frank and I will not be able to come to the tribute for Sandy. We have a big gathering of bluegrass musicians at our house on Columbus Day weekend every year, and we'll have about 75 people (including houseguests from out of state) at our house that day. There was no way to get in touch with everyone we told about it over the past year.

Anyway, we send our love to Caroline and the family and our personal tribute to Sandy. I'll certainly think of him with a smile to know you and we will all be hearing and making music with him in mind.

Sandy Paton obituary

Musician and founder of the Folk-Legacy label
* Tony Russell
    * guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 30 September 2009 18.56 BST

During the late 1950s and early 60s, a wave of American folk singers broke on British shores – artists such as Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Richard Fariña and Bob Dylan. Amid this procession was a personable couple named Sandy and Caroline Paton.

Sandy Paton, who has died aged 80, continued to make music with Caroline for many years, but his most important contribution to folk music was to co-found the record label Folk-Legacy, which has survived the vicissitudes of the independent record business for almost half a century. Folk-Legacy LPs, instantly recognisable by their sober, black-and-white sleeves, introduced enthusiasts both to voices of the East Coast folk revival, such as Gordon Bok and Rosalie Sorrels, and to older practitioners such as the Kentucky singer Sarah Ogan Gunning and the North Carolina banjo player and singer Frank Proffitt, whose tale of the murderer Tom Dooley was turned into a million-selling disc by the Kingston Trio.

Paton's father was a geographer, and the family moved often. He spent his teens in Seattle, painting, acting and discovering folk music, eventually choosing the latter as his profession. In 1957 he met Caroline and later that year they visited Britain, performing at folk clubs such as the Troubadour and Eel Pie Island in London.

Paton recorded three EPs of American folk songs for the small Jazz Collector label and assisted the Scots folklorist Hamish Henderson in recording the celebrated Aberdeen singer Jeannie Robertson and her daughter Lizzie Higgins. While in Britain, Caroline gave birth to their son David, and some of the songs they sang to him appeared a couple of years later on their Topic EP Hush Little Baby.

Back in the US, Paton worked for a time in the record department of a Chicago store, building up its stock of folk albums. On a song-collecting trip to Appalachia, he recorded Proffitt and Horton Barker, a blind ballad singer from Virginia. Impressed by the tapes, his friend Lee Haggerty suggested they create a record label, and provided financial backing.

Based in Burlington, Vermont, where the Patons then lived, Folk-Legacy opened its catalogue in 1961 with an album by Proffitt. There were further LPs by traditional performers, such as two volumes of songs from the community of Beech Mountain, North Carolina, but the mainstays of the enterprise were artists such as Bok, Ed Trickett, Art Thieme and Michael Cooney, and the Scots singers Jean Redpath and Archie Fisher. A popular early release, Golden Ring, was subtitled A Gathering of Friends for Making Music. The phrase succinctly defines the Folk-Legacy ethic.

In a catalogue that eventually topped 120, the Patons allowed themselves an occasional album of their own, and over the years released Sandy & Caroline Paton, I've Got a Song, New Harmony and When the Spirit Says Sing. Paton also continued his field-recording work and in 1977 he produced the collection Brave Boys: New England Traditions in Folk Music for New World Records.

The Patons' services to folk music were recognised in awards from the California Traditional Music Society, the Memphis Dulcimer festival and the Eisteddfod festival of traditional arts in Massachusetts. In 1993 the Commission on the Arts in Connecticut, where they had moved in 1967, declared them "official State Troubadours".

Paton is survived by Caroline and their sons, David and Rob.

• Charles Alexander (Sandy) Paton, folk musician and record company owner, born January 22 1929; died July 26 2009

Caroline asked me to post this:

Musical Tribute and Memorial for Sandy Paton

A memorial for Charles Alexander “Sandy”Paton will be held on Saturday October 10th at one o’clock PM at Music Mountain, 225Music Mountain Road, Falls Village, CT, Phone: (860)824-7126. The program will include remembrances and music from family, friends and members oft he American, English, Scottish, and Irish folk music communities, many of whom were recorded by Sandy Paton on his company label Folk Legacy. The memorial will be followed by a potluck meal of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, and more music and sharing. Directions to Music Mountain can be found on the web at musicmountain.org. Sandy Paton died peacefully on Sunday July 26th at the age of eighty. He was a well-known folksinger, folklorist, and music producer. He sang a wide repertoire of traditional songs in a fine and true tenor voice, accompanying himself with tasteful, flowing guitar work. His passion was to record and produce the expression of other artists, taking time to create the finest possible recordings. Producing records, and later CDs, involved recording, editing, and programming the music while also taking photos, designing covers, and writing notes for the accompanying booklets. The result was a catalog of 140 classic folk recordings, all of which are in print and available at: Folk Legacy,P.O. Box 1148, Sharon, CT 06069, Phone: (860)364-5661, email: folklegacy@snet.net, Web address:folklegacy.com Sandy and Caroline Paton founded Folk Legacy in1961 with their friend and business partner Lee Haggerty. Their first release was of Frank Proffitt, a farmer and fretless-banjo player from the mountains of North Carolina who was celebrated as the source of the song “Tom Dooley” (made famous by the Kingston Trio), which launched the folk music revival of the 1960s. Many other albums followed, featuring artists from all over the United States, as well as England, Scotland and Ireland. One exciting find was the singer Sara Cleveland from Hudson Falls, New York who knew hundreds of songs from her family tradition of classic ballads and lumbering songs. Folk Legacy also recorded many fine musicians from the folk revival including Gordon Bok, Rosalie Sorrels, Bill Staines ,Jean Redpath, Archie Fisher, and many others. Because his father worked for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, Sandy’s family moved almost every year before he was thirteen. He left home early to travel around the country with a guitar and a sleeping bag. During World War II, when many men were in the army, Sandy worked harvesting wheat in Salina, Kansas. He studied painting at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. and later in Seattle with Mark Tobey and Morris Graves, resulting in a successful one-man show. He worked as an actor in the Northwest and later in New York City where he played the male lead in Shaw’s “Arms and the Man” off-Broadway. As time went on, he focused more and more on traditional folk music, researching and performing a varied repertoire. In 1957 he met a folk enthusiast, Caroline Ann Swenson, at one of his concerts in Berkeley, CA. The story is that Sandy noticed a young woman singing vigorous harmony on the choruses of his songs, and wasted no time getting to know her after the concert. The couple married and spent a year in England performing in clubs and studying British folk music. They visited and collected songs from traditional singers including Jeannie Robertson, a magnificent ballad singer from Aberdeen, Scotland. Sandy and Caroline’s first son David was born while the couple was living in England. Returning to the U.S. and the greater Chicago area, Sandy sang at the Gate of Horn with Odetta and Martha Schlamme. He recorded his first album “The Many Sides of Sandy Paton” for Elektra Records. Later in Colorado, Sandy sang at the Limelight Club.Around that time, the Patons met Judy Collins, a young singer with whom they shared songs and babysitting. The Patons moved back to the Chicago areain 1960 where their second son Rob was born. , Sandy met Lee Haggerty, another folk enthusiast, who suggested that they start Folk Legacy. Folk Legacy was incorporated on October 31, 1961 in Huntington, VT. Though the choice of Halloween was coincidental, it is one of the most important folkloric dates in the annual calendar. Living in Vermont, the Patons presented programs all over the state including the Trapp Family Lodge and the Sugarbush Inn. In1967 Folk Legacy, Lee Haggerty, and the Paton family moved to Sharon, CT where David and Rob were enrolled in Sharon Center School. Over the years, Sandy and Caroline produced recordings of their own music, presented hundreds of concerts in CT and around the U.S., enlarged the Folk Legacy catalog, and participated in folk gatherings, including the Chicago, Fox Hollow, Newport, Smithsonian, Philadelphia, NEFFA, Nomad, and Old Songs festivals. They were founding members of the North American Folk Alliance and were designated Connecticut State Troubadours in 1993. Their sons David and Rob are both musicians, each performing on his own and together as the Paton Family. Folk Legacy will enter its 48th year in late October. Caroline, David and Rob will continue collecting, performing, and producing folk music, carrying on the work initiated by Sandy, Caroline and Lee (who died in 2000). Sandy Paton is survived by his wife Caroline; sons David and Rob; grandchildren Linnea, Erik, Hannah, Shannon, and Juliana; sisters, Barbara Gardner and D’Ann Paton of CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson Kaelan who was swept away by the Housatonic River on June 16, 2009 after helping two friends to safety from the rushing water. Tax-deductible contributions in Sandy’s name can be made to the Kaelan Paton Memorial Fund and sent to: Caroline Paton, P.O. Box 1148, Sharon, CT 06069or Salisbury Bank, P.O. Box 7, Sharon, CT 06069. Box 472, Sharon, CT 06069 or to Lpalmerpaton@yahoo.com for possible inclusion in a future biography or history.

Hi, folks,

I had dinner with Caroline tonight. She is getting more up-to-date on orders & asked me to let folks know that she has some time to chat now & would welcome your calls. She still hasn't figured out a way to see the computer well enough to manage email. She appreciates the cards that have been sent, but hasn't managed to read them all yet, since her vision makes it quite difficult.

best,

Barbara

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure whether I'll be able to be there in person (I've got a lot of
travel in October and some important reasons to be home as well), but I will certainly be there in spirit... as I was for Kaelen's memorial.
For what it's worth, the Scottish friends who are coming over are Alison McMoreland and Geordie McIntyre. Fabulous singers and dear friends of Caroline and Sandy's. I've spoken with them, and they are most honored to be asked to be part of this. Alison and Geordie are traveling over to the states around that time for the Eisteddfod Festival in New York the next weekend.

Beth and I will be there too.

Our thanks to Caroline and to all who are involved in planning the event for making it possible for Sandy's many friends to come together and celebrate his life.

Ruth and I will be there. It will be a pleasure to meet some Mudcatters in person. Please don't send a proxy. It's not as much fun.

Hi, folks,

I just spoke with Caroline. Apologies for the delay in giving details; Caroline is working hard on the business end of things, as well as tying up many loose ends. The memorial & musical tribute to the life & work of Sandy Paton will begin at 1 pm on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Music Mountain. There will be a memorial, potluck meal, etc., in that order. Caroline apologizes to those who have conflicts that day & hopes that the time will be early enough to allow people to participate. After the memorial, there will be food (with some level of potluck, for those who can contribute)&, probably, some level of song circle, etc. for those who can stay. Albany is a nice airport, as a secondary choice to Bradley.

Sharon Motor Lodge is nearby, right in "downtown" Sharon. There'e, also, a very posh hotel nearby--Troutbeck. Those places are, respectively, about 5 & 15 minutes from Patons' home. If you search "Sharon CT motels" you'll find a couple of other possibilities. From Music Mountain, I'm not as sure, since I've never been there. Using this search--"falls village, ct" motels--I got the Wake Robin Inn and Interlaken Inn, but I can't speak for them. I suspect they are pricy.

best,

Barbara

Truly public campground--Housatonic Meadows State Park is only a few miles South on US 7, on the Sharon side of the river across from Cornwall.

Music Mountain is north of the Cornwall/Canaan town line, in the town of Cannan--not to be confused with the village of Canaan, which is in the town of North Canaan. (The village of South Canaan is in the town of Canaan, as is the village called Falls Village.) And of course, New Canaan is 75 miles away.
