I used to live in Calne and usually visit once a year.

The Boys From County Hell come from Calne, well maybe a couple of them do!!

Yes, come to the North West - of Wiltshire that is! I live in Calne, in N.W. Wiltshire. Smallish sized town with relatively cheap housing for sale. 7 miles from Chippenham - with its Folk Festival, 3/4 Morris and/or clog sides and folk dedicated public house where something happens practically every night of the week. 9 miles from Bob & Gill Berry's folk club at Devizes - tiny bit further to the (very) long running traditional singers club at Swindon, which also has music sessions/morris, etc. The Marlborough Downs are on the doorstep + the ancient site of Avebury. Nearest train station Chippenham (7 mins to Bath, fractionally longer to Swindon). Shopping in Calne - forget it - go to Chippenham or for serious retail therapy Swindon. PM me for more specific detail if you wish.

N.W. Wilts is a really good place to live - wide open spaces because the MOD own the land in most of central Wiltshire so it can't be built upon. Easy access to motorways - on the M4 corridor so travel to London or Bristol is simple. Shed loads of very ancient history.

I think Bob and Gill Berry are involved in this. They also run the Chippenham folk festival and a nice little club in Devizes, and they are good people to know.

There's also the white Horse Festival that on in 2 weeks at the Grove near Wantage. Go there and enjoy.

Chippenham & Bradford-on-Avon both seem to have a lot of folky things going on. Chippenham folk festival is really good.

If you're looking for an interesting small town with a nice community, lots of history & a decent High St. I'd suggest Malmesbury. It's about 15 mins drive from Chippenham, and about 30 mins from Bradford-on-Avon, Swindon, Bath & Bristol - but like a lot of Wiltshire the public transport's not very good. The Womad festival takes place every year just outside of Malmesbury and residents get cheap tickets, which is nice if it's your sort of thing.

Y'know I've considered the N/W too. Especially as I have family style friends near Manchester.
Wherever I land, it's got to be a bit more err 'eclectic' than where I'm currently at.

I keep musing on a possible future move. There are a few areas I'm considering, including Wiltshire.

It'd be really helpful, if Mudcatters who know Wiltshire well would offer some helpful advice about villages and towns in the area that might be worthy of consideration?

Ideally I'd like to be in an area not far from some lively folk musical activities.

Other interests include outdoorsy stuff, walking etc. As well as err 'cultural' thingummy's and local sites of interest.
Mostly though I'd just like a modestly sized town or lively village, with an easy going atmosphere & pleasant local scene, and decent public transport links to bigger places, with lots more stuff happening.

Cue tumbleweed... ?
