When I was in college, one of my classmates sang this song in a great fake country accent. I remember very few of the lyrics, but it started like this:

Fair Hannah lived on a mountain top
In a far and lonely spot....

And one part (the last verse? the chorus?)went like this:

....And tenderly he did say:

Git up offa that floor, Hannah,
Dem hogs is gotta be fed,
Ain't no use in lying there
Pertendin' like you're dead;
There's ducks an' geese in the parlor
An' the dog's been in your bed.
So git up offa that floor, Hannah,
Dem hogs is gotta be fed.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'd love to have all the lyrics.

Apparently the song was recorded by a former member of Spike Jones' City Slickers group. I found the following posted by ted.hering ton a forum thread at

Allmusic.com lists GIT UP OFF'N THE FLOOR, HANNAH, recorded by Red Ingle on "Tim-Tayshun", Bear Family 16115, 1997. They attribute it to Foster Carling, Red Ingle, and Country Washburne. I think they were all members of Spike Jones' City Slickers.

I transcribed these words from a sound sample:

...'Cause Charles in these well-frozen words at last the silence broke:
"Why sit you like a monument which has no power to stir?"
He called her name again and again but she answered not a word,
No, she answered not a word.

So Charles turned round to go back home and as they reached the door,
Poor Hannah being frozen fell exhausted to the floor.

The Red Ingle CD mentioned a few times above is a really great one - highly recommended at any price. Quite a few of the songs, like the transcription above, start with a spoken intro, complete with a spitting noise, as he sends one into the spittoon.

Many tracks feature the beautiful singing voice of Cinderella G. Stump (I wonder if anyone here can tell me - without Googling, etc - which famous American songstress and folk-song populariser, this was a pseudonym for).

There is also a version of the Cajun classic "Jolie Blonde", but please don't ask me to transcribe.

Red Ingle's "Tim-tayshun" was the first if not the only novelty tune to make it to the top of the hit parade (not even Spike Jones had a #1 hit.)

Believe it or not, some country music fans of the time thought it was a serious song, not a parody of Perry Como's "Temptation" (they obviously never heard Como's hit.)

Jo Stafford happened to be walking by the studio where Red was rehearsing Tim-tayshun. She walked in and asked Red to let her sing it. He did, and "Cinderella G Stump" went on to record several more parodies with Red.

My advice is to get the album if you can, be it CD, vinyl, or tape. It also has "Git Up off'n that floor, Hannah," "Cigareets, Whusky, and Wild Wild Women," plus many more

My father (an admiral in the Canadian Navy) used to sing this song (it was his signature tune!) and we named our daughter Hannah. I have been trying to find the lyrics to send them to her.

I was looking for the lyrics to this song to show to my fiancee... My grandfather used to sing this song and since he has passed, I wanted to include it in my wedding somehow. What are the chances that my mother was the last to post on this thread in January 2010...

If the Red Ingle version, it sounds like it will be quite a wedding!

I have that CD because Dick Greenhaus grabbed me by the arm as I was walking by his booth, shoved headphones at me, and said "Listen to this!" He knew my taste was vulgar enough that I'd have no choice but to buy.

My favorite on there is probably (He Came to Town as Hot as a) Two Dollar Pistol.

[sorry, never could do clickies], incl that he learned the fiddle originally from Fritz Kreisler & played sax early in career in groups including Bix Beiderbecke & Perry Como. Also says that his nickname was Swamphead ~~ I seem to rcall a very early 78 I owned in the late 40s, soon after he would have left Spike Jones to set up on his own account, with group labelled as "Red Ingle & His Swampheeads"; anyone know what that might have been ~ "Cigareets & Whuskey", perhaps?

Which song, Cigs & Whuskey, BTW, has also been recorded by Jim Croce, Ramblin Jack Elliott, The Muppets, et al, et al ~~ but I can't track down who actually wrote it; was it Ingle himself, or does it go back fureher, a real country song that he sent up? Or what?

Anyone know?

Well, I see an old discussion is picking up again. Good!

Cigareeets and Whusky was written by Tim Spencer, of the Sons of the Pioneers. (In fact, the Sons made their own version, which was quite 'straight' compared to the Red Ingle version!)

I'll add one detail to the Jo Stafford story. Jo told me herself that she was in the Captiol studios for her own session, when she walked past the Red Ingle band as they were setting up. Country Washburn spotted her and said something to the effect, "There's just the girl who can do it!" meaning, provide the corny vocal for Tim-Tay-Shun. Jo had earlier made a novelty record with the same hillbilly voice, "Friendship," when whe was with the Dorsey band.

As for the 'Swamphead' nickname, it was used only once on a Spike Jones label, the record 'Chloe.' Other nicknames were used for other Jones records Red Ingle sang for, such as "Serenade to a Jerk" with "Red (Jerk) Ingle."

I hadn't heard of the Red Ingle and his Swampheads session, but that's possible. He recorded several tracks for obscure labels after he left Capitol. (His Capitol sessions always credited "Red Ingle and his Natural Seven.")
