Subject: Lyr Req: Fair Hannah Lived On A Mountain Top From: Alicia Date: 06 Aug 09 - 11:13 PM When I was in college, one of my classmates sang this song in a great fake country accent. I remember very few of the lyrics, but it started like this: Fair Hannah lived on a mountain top In a far and lonely spot.... And one part (the last verse? the chorus?)went like this: ....And tenderly he did say: Git up offa that floor, Hannah, Dem hogs is gotta be fed, Ain't no use in lying there Pertendin' like you're dead; There's ducks an' geese in the parlor An' the dog's been in your bed. So git up offa that floor, Hannah, Dem hogs is gotta be fed. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'd love to have all the lyrics. Alicia |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Hannah Lived On A Mountain Top From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 07 Aug 09 - 05:24 PM Apparently the song was recorded by a former member of Spike Jones' City Slickers group. I found the following posted by ted.hering ton a forum thread at http://www.spikejones.net/chat.php?60 QUOTE "Get Up Off'n That Floor Hannah (Them pigs have gotta be fed)" was by ex-Slicker RED INGLE and his Natural Seven, on Capitiol Records. (It has been reissued on a Red Ingle German import CD.) Good luck finding it. Bob |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Hannah Lived On A Mountain Top From: Peace Date: 07 Aug 09 - 06:11 PM A site I encountered gives the title as "Git Up Off'n The Floor Hannah". Maybe that'll help. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Hannah Lived On A Mountain Top From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Aug 09 - 03:00 PM Allmusic.com lists GIT UP OFF'N THE FLOOR, HANNAH, recorded by Red Ingle on "Tim-Tayshun", Bear Family 16115, 1997. They attribute it to Foster Carling, Red Ingle, and Country Washburne. I think they were all members of Spike Jones' City Slickers. I transcribed these words from a sound sample: ...'Cause Charles in these well-frozen words at last the silence broke: "Why sit you like a monument which has no power to stir?" He called her name again and again but she answered not a word, No, she answered not a word. So Charles turned round to go back home and as they reached the door, Poor Hannah being frozen fell exhausted to the floor. Young Charlie wept with bitter tears on seeing.... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Hannah Lived On A Mountain Top From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Aug 09 - 04:16 PM GIT UP OFF'N THE FLOOR, HANNAH seems to be a parody of this song in the DT: YOUNG CHARLOTTE (FROZEN GIRL). See also the thread: Lyr Req: Frozen Charlotte / Young Charlotte |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Hannah Lived On A Mountain Top From: Alicia Date: 09 Aug 09 - 09:55 PM Yes, "Git Up Off'n The Floor Hannah" sounds like the right song. And the lyrics of "Young Charlotte" tell essentially the same story. Thanks! Alicia |
Subject: Lyr Add: GIT UP OFF'N THE FLOOR, HANNAH (Red Ingle From: Stewie Date: 10 Aug 09 - 01:17 AM I can't believe I spent time transcribing this load of old cobblers, but here you go, Alicia - for the last couple of stanzas, there are multiple voices involved: GIT UP OFF'N THE FLOOR, HANNAH Spoken: Sing it sad and play it right 'Cos we got bad (spitting noise) news tonight Fair Hannah lived on a mountain farm in a lone and dreary spot No dwelling was for miles around but the one her father got 'Tis New Year's eve, at the village inn there's a merry ball tonight The air is freezing cold above, the hearths are warm inside Fair Hannah waits with anxious eyes as well as anxious ears Then dashing up to the farmhouse door, young Charlie's sleigh appears Her mother says, 'My daughter dear, this blanket around you fold 'For it is a dreadful night abroad and you'll take your death of cold' Fair Hannah cried, 'Oh no, no, no', she laughed like a gypsy queen 'Were I to ride in a blanket covered up, I never could be seen 'My silken cloak is quite enough, 'tis lined you know throughout 'And then I have my silken scarf to tie my face about' So o'er the hills and faster o'er and by the cold starlight Till Charles in these well-frozen words at last the silence broke 'Why sit you like a monument which has no power to stir' He called her name again and again, but she answered not a word No she answered not a word So Charles turned round to go back home and as they reached the door Poor Hannah being frozen fell exhausted to the floor Young Charlie wept with bitter tears on seeing her this way He held her hand and stroked her brow as tenderly he did say 'Git up off'n that floor, Hannah, them hogs has got to be fed 'Why, there ain't no one to do the chores with you a playin' dead 'Why, there's ducks and geese in the parlour and the dog's been in your bed 'So get up off'n that floor, Hannah, them hogs has got to be fed 'Yes, get up off'n that floor, them hogs has got to be fed' 'You can't go on a layin' there like a bag or lump of lead 'I don't want no lazy woman if whenever we gets wed 'So get up off'n that floor, Hannah, them hogs have got to be fed' Source: transcription of Red Ingle on "Tim-Tayshun", Bear Family 16115, 1997. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red I From: NormanD Date: 12 Aug 09 - 10:34 AM The Red Ingle CD mentioned a few times above is a really great one - highly recommended at any price. Quite a few of the songs, like the transcription above, start with a spoken intro, complete with a spitting noise, as he sends one into the spittoon. Many tracks feature the beautiful singing voice of Cinderella G. Stump (I wonder if anyone here can tell me - without Googling, etc - which famous American songstress and folk-song populariser, this was a pseudonym for). There is also a version of the Cajun classic "Jolie Blonde", but please don't ask me to transcribe. norman |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red Ingle From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Aug 09 - 01:38 PM I cannot tell a lie, NormanD. I did look it up with Google, but since more than 24 hours had passed since your message, I figured it was time. Cinderella G. Stump was Jo Stafford. There are several songs by Ingle, with and without Stafford, on YouTube. You might as well start with TIM-TAY-SHUN and follow the links to the others. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red I From: NormanD Date: 13 Aug 09 - 05:46 PM Corr-ect! Ptoo - ping (sound of great expectoration into copper spittoon). Cinderella G. Stump sounds like a WC Fields creation. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red Ingle From: GUEST Date: 21 Aug 09 - 10:32 PM Red Ingle's "Tim-tayshun" was the first if not the only novelty tune to make it to the top of the hit parade (not even Spike Jones had a #1 hit.) Believe it or not, some country music fans of the time thought it was a serious song, not a parody of Perry Como's "Temptation" (they obviously never heard Como's hit.) Jo Stafford happened to be walking by the studio where Red was rehearsing Tim-tayshun. She walked in and asked Red to let her sing it. He did, and "Cinderella G Stump" went on to record several more parodies with Red. My advice is to get the album if you can, be it CD, vinyl, or tape. It also has "Git Up off'n that floor, Hannah," "Cigareets, Whusky, and Wild Wild Women," plus many more |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red Ingle From: GUEST,SM Date: 22 Jan 10 - 09:57 AM My father (an admiral in the Canadian Navy) used to sing this song (it was his signature tune!) and we named our daughter Hannah. I have been trying to find the lyrics to send them to her. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red Ingle From: GUEST,Fair Hannah Date: 10 Jan 11 - 07:36 AM I was looking for the lyrics to this song to show to my fiancee... My grandfather used to sing this song and since he has passed, I wanted to include it in my wedding somehow. What are the chances that my mother was the last to post on this thread in January 2010... Many thanks to you devoted fair hannah fans :) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red Ingle From: Midchuck Date: 10 Jan 11 - 10:26 AM You want to sing the original at the wedding? or the parody? If the Red Ingle version, it sounds like it will be quite a wedding! I have that CD because Dick Greenhaus grabbed me by the arm as I was walking by his booth, shoved headphones at me, and said "Listen to this!" He knew my taste was vulgar enough that I'd have no choice but to buy. My favorite on there is probably (He Came to Town as Hot as a) Two Dollar Pistol. Peter |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red Ingle From: MGM·Lion Date: 11 Jan 11 - 12:07 AM Much info on Ingle here http://www.lyricsvault.eu/php/bio.php?a=5014 [sorry, never could do clickies], incl that he learned the fiddle originally from Fritz Kreisler & played sax early in career in groups including Bix Beiderbecke & Perry Como. Also says that his nickname was Swamphead ~~ I seem to rcall a very early 78 I owned in the late 40s, soon after he would have left Spike Jones to set up on his own account, with group labelled as "Red Ingle & His Swampheeads"; anyone know what that might have been ~ "Cigareets & Whuskey", perhaps? Which song, Cigs & Whuskey, BTW, has also been recorded by Jim Croce, Ramblin Jack Elliott, The Muppets, et al, et al ~~ but I can't track down who actually wrote it; was it Ingle himself, or does it go back fureher, a real country song that he sent up? Or what? Anyone know? ~Michael~ |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red Ingle From: GUEST,tkhering Date: 12 Jan 11 - 06:33 PM Well, I see an old discussion is picking up again. Good! Cigareeets and Whusky was written by Tim Spencer, of the Sons of the Pioneers. (In fact, the Sons made their own version, which was quite 'straight' compared to the Red Ingle version!) I'll add one detail to the Jo Stafford story. Jo told me herself that she was in the Captiol studios for her own session, when she walked past the Red Ingle band as they were setting up. Country Washburn spotted her and said something to the effect, "There's just the girl who can do it!" meaning, provide the corny vocal for Tim-Tay-Shun. Jo had earlier made a novelty record with the same hillbilly voice, "Friendship," when whe was with the Dorsey band. As for the 'Swamphead' nickname, it was used only once on a Spike Jones label, the record 'Chloe.' Other nicknames were used for other Jones records Red Ingle sang for, such as "Serenade to a Jerk" with "Red (Jerk) Ingle." I hadn't heard of the Red Ingle and his Swampheads session, but that's possible. He recorded several tracks for obscure labels after he left Capitol. (His Capitol sessions always credited "Red Ingle and his Natural Seven.") |

I followed it up to find excellent wikipedia entry on the Sons Of The Pioneers, including info that one of its founder-members went on to become Roy Rogers. ~Michael~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Git Up off'n the Floor, Hannah (Red Ingle From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Jan 11 - 05:07 PM This can now be heard on YouTube.
