Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: GUEST,Spleen Cringe Date: 02 May 13 - 05:42 PM Spider John has a NEW ALBUM (yay!) just released by the mighty Hornbeam Recordings, who also brought us a tremendous Tom Paley album last year. Details here: What's Left of Spider John |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: GUEST,Ian Anderson Date: 02 Oct 09 - 01:00 PM Thanks for comments above. It was a wonderful night with a fantastic response - also great to have my old friend and hero around for a few days before heading off this morning to Denmark. I recorded a lot more interview and fixed up a photo session with Judith Burrows: we'll hang on to those til next year, when we have A Plan that needs a few 'i's crossing and 't's dotting before mentioning in public. Norman D has written in slightly more detail and I've posted a snap from the gig on the fRoots Board. On the night, John completely forgot the few copies of his recent live CD with Tony Glover that he had left to sell after the Irish tour, so I bought them off him. If anybody would like to buy one of them, see the link above for detaIls. I still don't understand why he's not considered a national treasure in the USA, with the Awards and citations that go with such things. |

Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Leadfingers Date: 02 Oct 09 - 06:09 AM Too late to ask him on this tour Art ! But I have some idea what you mean - John's treatment of 'Waiting for a Train' was VERY interesting |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Art Thieme Date: 01 Oct 09 - 10:20 PM I am serious about this: Ask John if he would play "Shenandoah" -- He does it his way---and quite effectively. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: NormanD Date: 01 Oct 09 - 05:10 PM I agree. A great evening. The man is a true master musician, playing 12-string, mouth harp, and stomping foot. Great singing voice, which seems to have matured with his age. I understand that the gig was being recorded for Joe Cushley's weekly blues show, 'Balling The Jack', on resonance fm radio. I forgot to ask Joe (who was there) when it's going out. Joe? |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Leadfingers Date: 30 Sep 09 - 07:39 PM That was a Cracking Evening ! Mostly 'Traditional' American with just a few of his own songs , nearly all with 12 string , and three Unaccompanied . Forv a guy in his early seventies , his voice is still good , and his guitar style is VERY interesting ! Shame that the request for UK gigs came in so late , but at least we had ONE excellent night ! Thanks Ian and The Green Note !! |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 25 Sep 09 - 03:40 PM Many thanks. Unfortunately I won't be getting over this time. |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: janbo Date: 25 Sep 09 - 05:29 AM Spider has 3 more shows in Ireland. Friday 9/25 at An Spailpin Fanach in Cork; Sunday 9/27 at The Button Factory (temple bar) Dublin and Monday 9/28 at the Ballymore Inn, Ballymore Eustace. Chip Taylor Smith who has been performing fiddle and bones in the US with Spider for 30 plus years will be playing with Spider in Ireland. Spider's schedule can be found in the calendar of his web site http: //www.mwt.net/~koerner/ Jonathan Fitzgerald of the County Mayo band, Sons Of Gingerbread, arranged Spider John's Ireland tour. The Sons of Gingerbread are touring with John and Chip. Thanks Jonathan! Spider John is playing a 12-string these days. |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: PHJim Date: 24 Sep 09 - 06:19 PM Does Spider John ever play his seven string guitar anymore? Most of the current photos show him with a twelve or six string. Martin now has a seven string configured just like the one on the Koerner, Ray & Glover records. They credit it's invention to Roger McGuinn, but I think John came up with it first. |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 23 Sep 09 - 08:08 PM Ok. What are the Ireland gigs? Dublin's as easy to get to as London from the North of England. |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Leadfingers Date: 23 Sep 09 - 08:03 PM I seem to to be free next Wednesday !! |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: GUEST,Ian Anderson Date: 23 Sep 09 - 07:51 PM One last bump for this, since poxy Time Out failed to include it in their listings this week, and I'd hate for anybody who would have liked to have seen SJK to miss him (you were possibly out seeing Ramblin' Jack Elliott in London tonight too - with whom John recorded the Legends Of Folk album . . . ) |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: MarkS Date: 08 Sep 09 - 02:48 PM If you can get a request in, ask him to do his version of "Duncan and Bradey" Memorable! Mark |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: GUEST,Ian Anderson Date: 08 Sep 09 - 02:39 PM End of summer bump! |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: GUEST Date: 14 Aug 09 - 03:10 PM Glad everyone is happy about the uk gig, we are the ones bringing him to ireland and have 5 gigs organised if you cant make the uk date. |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: GUEST,Ian Anderson Date: 08 Aug 09 - 04:45 PM Will Fly- sadly, no other UK dates this time. He's doing some in Ireland and then coming for just a few days in England on his way to visit family in Denmark. I got asked if I could help fix something up and was pleased to be able to, but this was only last week and most venues are booked much further ahead. Even then the Green Note needed to move another booking, but luckily everybody was happy to co-operate to fix this one. Fingers crossed that it'll wake up enough interest to get him back. Terry - I remember you playing tin whistle with us on that song of John Koerner's at Bracknell Festival in the late 70s (there's a pic on Facebook from another song in the same set with you jamming, also including Simon Mayor, Alex Atterson, Tim Laycock & Bill Caddick!) but I had no idea you'd learned it. Blimey! Last time I sang it in public was at my then sister-in-law's wedding in Madagascar circa 1992 - it gets around!) |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Leadfingers Date: 08 Aug 09 - 04:11 PM I learnt 'Taking My Time' from one Ian A Anderson WAY back then ! Still do it regularly too ! Just hope we dont have a high Paying gig in September!! |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Folknacious Date: 08 Aug 09 - 03:43 PM Don't know who the Bob Dylan fellow is, but If Martin Simpson says he's great, it's good enough for me! |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: GUEST,Don Meixner Date: 07 Aug 09 - 05:24 PM Ian Anderson, really. |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Leadbelly Date: 07 Aug 09 - 05:12 PM John,I don't have it anymore. Gave it away to a person called Howard Stiht when he spent one night in my lttle room after a gig in Hamburg's "Danny's Pan" in 1969. He was personally involved in these 3 musicians from Minneapolis. He knew them very well and could play and sing like Koener and Ray on his 12-string. I will never forget this special night without any beer (!) when he made about 15 songs on my tape recorder. It's documented until now. At the moment he is successfully doing a come back as "Poor Howard" Stith, situated in NH. That's my short story why resp. how I "lost" my Koerner,Ray, Glover record. Manfred |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: John MacKenzie Date: 07 Aug 09 - 04:40 PM I still have the album Manfred, it's great stuff. First 9 string guitar I ever heard ;) |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Leadbelly Date: 07 Aug 09 - 04:34 PM He's one of the greatest! First time, I have had the pleasure to listen to his songs was in 1967. It was a record he recorded together with his friends Ray and Glover. I can't take part in Camden but everbody interested in this legend of folk/ blues should do. Highly recommended by Manfred from Germany |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Fortunato Date: 07 Aug 09 - 12:51 PM Barry, folk has almost never been as good. I have been to the P&S in recent years and I can imagine. Are you confessing to underage drinking? Shame! |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Barry Finn Date: 07 Aug 09 - 12:18 PM It's great to hear he's well & still at it. I used to catch him at the "Plow & Stars" in Cambridge, Mass as a teen (40 odd yrs ago), the only bar I could get into underage & the only one that had Spider John & his friends entaining & it was all for only the price of a drink. I can't remeber folk being as good. Barry |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: Will Fly Date: 07 Aug 09 - 12:16 PM Last saw Spider John at the Lancaster Folk Stir sometime around 1967 - the biggest boots in captivity came stomping down on the beat and rocked the house. But his appearance in Camden coincides with the Boat Band's 20th Anniversary Concert at the New Vic Theatre in Ashton-under-Lyme (and I have my tickets) - hopefully there'll be some other Spider John gigs while he's over here. |
Subject: RE: The return of Spider John Koerner From: John MacKenzie Date: 07 Aug 09 - 10:28 AM Haven't seen him since he turned up in Les Cousins in 1960something. Wish I could be there, alas it's just too far from here. J |
Subject: The return of Spider John Koerner From: GUEST,Ian Anderson Date: 07 Aug 09 - 10:18 AM Public service announcement! I'm very pleased to have helped set up the first and only UK gig since the early 1980s (when he last played Cambridge Folk Festival) for my first performing hero and a real genuine American folk blues legend. He'll be at London's intimate Green Note in Camden on Weds 30th Sept. Details here Some quotes from others, several of whom you may have heard of . . . ! "With my newly learned repertoire, I then went further up the street and dropped into the Ten O'Clock Scholar, a Beat coffeehouse. I was looking for players with kindred spirits. The first guy I met in Minneapolis like me was sitting around in there. It was John Koerner and he also had an acoustic guitar with him. Koerner was tall and thin with a look of perpetual amusement on his face. We hit it off right away. When he spoke he was soft spoken, but when he sang he became a field holler shouter. Koerner was an exciting singer, and we began playing a lot together. I learned a lot of songs off Koerner …" (Bob Dylan, in Chronicles Vol 1, 2004) "The word inimitable could have been coined for Spider John Koerner. A staggeringly singular guitarist and singer of blues and American traditional songs, he has influenced many musicians from Bob Dylan on down, but no one has come close to his unbelievably funky guitar style." (Martin Simpson, 2009) "The country-blues singer, songwriter, and barrelhouse guitarist Spider John Koerner – one-third of the legendary sixties folk trio Koerner, Ray, & Glover – has been performing in the bars and folk clubs of the Twin Cities ever since Bob Dylan was enrolled at the University of Minnesota (he was one of the first to turn Dylan on to folk music). Bonnie Raitt covered one of Koerner's songs on her début album, and his fans have included John Lennon and David Bowie. His influence on twentieth-century music aside, watching Koerner perform might be the closest you can get to understanding how, more than eighty years ago, Charley Patton alone on guitar kept a roomful of people dancing and partying until the sun came up. (The New Yorker, 2008) "Defying his years, Spider John Koerner was the night's real treat. His ramshackle demeanor (all gangly arms and legs and tucked-in flannel shirt) and ragtag trio captured the true essence of a hootenanny: spirited, communal, and completely off the cuff. Koerner was lean and nimble as the band tore through gritty folk-blues. Hard to believe the man is pushing 70." (Boston Globe, 2008) |
