It was a wonderful night with a fantastic response - also great to have my old friend and hero around for a few days before heading off this morning to Denmark. I recorded a lot more interview and fixed up a photo session with Judith Burrows: we'll hang on to those til next year, when we have A Plan that needs a few 'i's crossing and 't's dotting before mentioning in public. Norman D has written in slightly more detail and I've posted a snap from the gig on the fRoots Board. On the night, John completely forgot the few copies of his recent live CD with Tony Glover that he had left to sell after the Irish tour, so I bought them off him. If anybody would like to buy one of them, see the link above for detaIls. I still don't understand why he's not considered a national treasure in the USA, with the Awards and citations that go with such things. |

Mostly 'Traditional' American with just a few of his own songs , nearly all with 12 string , and three Unaccompanied . Forv a guy in his early seventies , his voice is still good , and his guitar style is VERY interesting ! Shame that the request for UK gigs came in so late , but at least we had ONE excellent night ! Friday 9/25 at An Spailpin Fanach in Cork; Sunday 9/27 at The Button Factory (temple bar) Dublin and Monday 9/28 at the Ballymore Inn, Ballymore Eustace. Chip Taylor Smith who has been performing fiddle and bones in the US with Spider for 30 plus years will be playing with Spider in Ireland. They credit it's invention to Roger McGuinn, but I think John came up with it first. |

He's doing some in Ireland and then coming for just a few days in England on his way to visit family in Denmark. I got asked if I could help fix something up and was pleased to be able to, but this was only last week and most venues are booked much further ahead. Even then the Green Note needed to move another booking, but luckily everybody was happy to co-operate to fix this one. Fingers crossed that it'll wake up enough interest to get him back. Terry - I remember you playing tin whistle with us on that song of John Koerner's at Bracknell Festival in the late 70s (there's a pic on Facebook from another song in the same set with you jamming, also including Simon Mayor, Alex Atterson, Tim Laycock & Bill Caddick!) but I had no idea you'd learned it. Blimey! Last time I sang it in public was at my then sister-in-law's wedding in Madagascar circa 1992 - it gets around!) |

Gave it away to a person called Howard Stiht when he spent one night in my lttle room after a gig in Hamburg's "Danny's Pan" in 1969. He was personally involved in these 3 musicians from Minneapolis. He knew them very well and could play and sing like Koener and Ray on his 12-string. I will never forget this special night without any beer (!) when he made about 15 songs on my tape recorder. It's documented until now. At the moment he is successfully doing a come back as "Poor Howard" Stith, situated in NH. That's my short story why resp. how I "lost" my Koerner,Ray, Glover record. I used to catch him at the "Plow & Stars" in Cambridge, Mass as a teen (40 odd yrs ago), the only bar I could get into underage & the only one that had Spider John & his friends entaining & it was all for only the price of a drink. But his appearance in Camden coincides with the Boat Band's 20th Anniversary Concert at the New Vic Theatre in Ashton-under-Lyme (and I have my tickets) - hopefully there'll be some other Spider John gigs while he's over here. |
