The Lish Young Buy-a-Broom is the classic Westmorland song. Of tunes from Westmorland the list would be endles: Westmorland Waltz, Kendal Ghyll, Kendal Waltz, Windermere Regatta, Elterwater Quickstep, Bonny Westmorland, Kendal Hornpipe, Kendal Reel etc etc etc

Sorry Tim, but while Afred Williams lived in Wiltshire, he collected songs from other places, Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire, as well.

Have at long last discovered a song from Exton, Rutland but alas no tune. Can anyone out there help. The song is A garland of roses and sweet blllming posies, I hope you remember it is new May Day. A garland of green, a garland of green, @Tis the very best garland that ever was seen.

I'd be wary of the Rout of the Blues as a Wiltshire song - I have a copy of the Hammond Brothers' mss where the version they collected in Dorset from Robert Barret has the opening line as 'As I marched down through Staffordshire Square.' Salisbury Plain is not mentioned.

Thanks for the responses. I had John Peel for Cumbria because of the Caldbeck connection and the fact that he is buried there. Thus was looking for Westmoreland. As I am trying to find traditional songs had not considered The witch of Westmoreland being fairly "modern", and whilst not necessarily wanting song which mentions places definitely would like song appropriate to the area and collected there - also one that is learnable and singable seeing I'm ageing and losing my range!!! (This is definitely a retirement project) So will now try Anne Gilchrist collection and Kendal Folk Song Competition refs. Thanks Sue.
Don't know either the Rout Has Come for the Blues or the Oakham Poachers so will follow those up to.
List of rest of counties I have within my singing range rather long. Do you really want it all?

Plenty of songs from Westmorland by the way in the Anne Gilchrist collection and some of old Folk Song Journals: notably those collected at the Kendal Folk Song Competition 1902 - 1906. Haven't refs to hand at moment but could find.

Sorry Sapper82 but John Peel wasn't from Troutbeck, in Westmorland (nor evern the Troutbeck in Cumberland) - but from Caldbeck. And he lived later on at Ruthwaite, near Ireby. One of the versions of the songs has him in Troutbeck (national song book?) ... but it was wrong!

Do you mean songs collected in Westmoreland or songs that refer the county in its title? If the latter, there's the Widow of Westmoreland's Daughter. For Wiltshire and Rutland, both Salisbury Plain and The Oakham Poachers spring to mind as mentioning towns from those counties.

Am slowly getting through the old counties of England with a traditional song from each. Stuck on Westmorland. Any help out there. Not doing too well on Wiltshire either and Rutland so far a complete wash out.
