Anne Lister

Anne Lister writes songs and sings them. She's best known for her song "Icarus", which has been covered by many other performers in the folk music world, but her other songs are equally distinctive and beautiful, weaving stories from the past with ideas from the present. Her performances are warm and engaging, with plenty of humour.
Anne now works mostly solo, although she teams up with Steafan Hannigan from time to time for recording (he has worked on all Anne's four albums) and occasional touring in the US (they have also performed together at guerilla showcases at several Folk Alliance gatherings).
Anne's work always attracts attention - songs which take myths and legends and weave them into a new relevance. Songs which pack a surprising emotional punch through the ancient tales. A simple, direct approach to performance, laced with liberal doses of humour and a close rapport with the audience. Entertaining and informative, with a careful blend of traditional and contemporary references. Celtic, Saxon, Norman and European plaited into one variegated braid - not a bad heritage!
Anne has been writing songs ever since she can remember, and performing in UK folk clubs ever since she was first able to persuade a barman to serve her with orange juice.
She was born a Londoner, but the family moved several times before settling in Cardiff, South Wales when Anne was ten years old. She was given her first guitar when she was thirteen, and taught herself to play - much more portable than the piano! She was an active member of the Cardiff and Newport folk club circuit for many years, until she went to the University of Warwick to study French. At Warwick she specialised in medieval French and Occitan literature - mostly the stories of King Arthur and the poetry of the troubadours, and stayed on to complete an MA in medieval studies.
She lived in Lyon, France for two years teaching English at the Universite Lyon II, and this was where she wrote Icarus and gradually realised that her songs were beginning to travel without her back in England. So she came back, did a teaching course and worked as Reviews Editor for Karl Dallas's Acoustic Music magazine. Nic Jones came across Anne and her songs at this time, and from then on her reputation spread slowly but steadily through the folk circuit. In 1984 there was a historic meeting of Anne, Martin Simpson (who had already started singing Icarus through the modern version of the folk process) and Mary McLaughlin, which led in due course to the formation of the duo Anonyma and all manner of other musical alliances. Anonyma toured widely in the UK and the US for five years and then parted amicably to allow both Anne and Mary to continue their separate musical projects.
Her current career includes storytelling, workshops on voice (for those who think they can't sing), creativity and storytelling (for those who lack confidence) and songwriting as well as concerts. She has finally left her full time teaching post and is hoping to tour more widely and more frequently in the US, as well as in the UK and Europe. The singing, storytelling and workshops have taken her to an enormous variety of venues and audiences, from small intimate folk clubs and house concerts to much bigger events at folk festivals and larger concert halls, and to France, Italy, Greece and Spain as well as the US.

Better Late Than Naked

Mark Addison – Songwriter and plays Electric and Accoustic Bass
Phil Biggs – Singer/Songwriter and plays Guitar and Mandola
John Blanks – Singer/Co writer and plays Guitar

Three respected Lincolnshire musicians rooted in folk music have combined to form the exciting trio "Better Late than Naked".
Phil Biggs and Mark Addison have played in many concert and ceilidh bands until finally playing together in "Akmeds Camel" and its later incarnation "Byard's Leap"
Both write songs, Phil having several solo albums behind him, whilst Mark has had success in winning the BBC Radio Lincolnshire "Write a Lincolnshire Folk Song" competition no less than three times. One of these, "The Fallen of Fulstow" was co-written with and performed in the competition by John Blanks, as was a runner up, "For Those Who Will Not Know Me" dedicated to the Polish airmen who flew from RAF Faldingworth in the 2nd World War – a subject originally suggested by one Les Worrall.
Despite the geographical problems (John lives in North Lincolnshire , while Phil and Mark come from the South) it was inevitable that the three should eventually get together
It's been suggested that the stage before a BLTN set resembles a high quality guitar shop, and the trio do indeed have a shared love of acoustic instruments, although Mark can usually be found playing the same Fender© bass he's used from new in 1973!
Add John's noted interpretation of songs by the likes of Stan Rogers, and the trio's choice of material including that of other Lincolnshire songwriters, and the result is a musical and vocal show which is being applauded widely at clubs and festivals alike.

Nerves are fine, thanks, Bruce! Although the most pressing reason for the nerves is the Anonyma reunion tour, which moves tomorrow into the next phase as we head for Broadstairs festival...

And I'm looking forward to Faldingworth, enormously.

I love the title to Les's thread. How nice of the Mudcat community not to come up with the obvious "A Lister and three "C" Listers"

Looking forward very much to our gig at Faldingworth with Anne.

Regarding Annie's experience at Broadstairs in another thread...Yes, Phil and I from BLTN were there last week. The streets can be scary at night, especially at the weekend (Hey, we live near Skegness!. 'Tis the same in almost any seaside town. - Still love the Folk Week though, as has given us employment and a week by the sea for the past few years.)

As Les has posted, we're on Tom Lane's show on Wednesday evening on BBC Radio Lincolnshire.

I'll flag up what we're planning to play...

Across the Open Sea (by Phil)
Sand in my Shoes (ditto) (A new song about the D Day landings juxtaposed to the present))
Turn the Bones Around (which is our last song and will probably get faded into he 7.00 news)

Any Mudcatters who would like one of these dedicated to them, post it here, and we'll do our best to oblige. Cheesey but fun!

Would this be the same 'Turn The Bones Around' wot our buddy Duncan McFarlane writ? A great song, can't wait to hear it - hope Tom gets on wi' it so the whole song is heard!

And Phil Biggs is a great writer too, looking forward to his songs.

Would I have heard Mark and Phil anywhere during Broadstairs week? Although I have to admit my own scheduling and need to rehearse with Mary meant I didn't spend a lot of time listening to others, sadly, apart from in the singarounds where I happened to be!

Hello Anne,

No, Phil and I were just there at the beginning of the week...think you were there at the end, so our paths wouldn't have crossed. Shame, as we would have like to meet up before Faldingworth.

However, look forward very much to meeting up on the 29th.

You may be able to listen to us on Radio Lincolnshire on Wednesday from 6.30, via http://www.bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire/
(click listen live) Will be on iPlayer afterwards.

Better Late Than Naked were excellent, under what is normally a very stressful way of singing. Not much room there either, so I guess they must have been sitting on each others laps :-) LOL.
Well done guys and see you on the 29th August.

I'm feeling a strange new bond with the rest of the band. ;-)

Actually BBC Lincolnshire did us proud with a separate studio, three mics and an engineer.

They are certainly one of the better Local BBC Stations.

What a lovely evening.
We had an audience of 55 which is lower than normal, but very understandable with it being on a Bank Holiday weekend and all that goes on at such times.
We had a wonderful evening listening to Anne Lister and Better Late Than Naked. It were a reet treat.
So a very big thanks to one and all.

Next evening September 12th when Duncan McFarlane Accoustic Band will be entertaining us with support from Fyrish.

Special Note
Such is the popularity of Churchfitters, who will be appearing on Saturday October 3rd, we have already sold 73 tickets of the 100 allocated. So if you haven't already reserved your tickets for payment on the door, then I would do so as quickly as possible.
