I was just making Erik's picked eggs and went to look up Suzi Wollenberg on the web and saw this. I remember when Suzi and Erika lived on Wilber Street in Newark. I think that they had both graduated from Randolf Macon. So sad.

I think I met Suzi---somewhere---when I was still traveling east of the Mississippi River and singing. The memory is vague--but warm-- with a recognition I cannot explain. I feel sadness for you all, and for her family.

What a terrible shock to find out about this. Suzi was a joy to be around and a very wonderful human being. I was honored to be 1 of the music vendors for many many years at the Green Willow folk club as well for almost 30 years at the Delaware Valley Bluegrass festival. I hope & pray someone or a group pick up the torch and carry on her great work. Blessed be in heaven Suzi.

She was an incredible generator of positive energy.

I am lucky to have known her.

I will miss her.

This is another devastating loss for the folk community, and completely unexpected. I'm still kind of in shock.

Suzi was a friendly and generous spirit who did so much to support folk music and folk musicians through the folk club and the radio station.

She will be deeply missed.

SUZANNE WOLLENBERG

Suzanne E.

Wollenberg, "Suzi"

Age 56, of Claymont, DE, passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 8, 2009, while vacationing with friends in Bethany Beach, DE.

She was born October 13, 1952 in Fort Lee, VA, the daughter of Edward K. and Mary (Edwards) Wollenberg, and grew up in Chesterfield Co., VA, near Richmond. She was a 1974 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, VA. For more than 30 years Suzi was a folk music radio host and concert presenter in Delaware and Pennsylvania. In 1977 she became one of the original hosts of "Roots", the long-running folk music show on WVUD at the University of Delaware, broadcasting her final show only a few days before her passing. As president of the Green Willow Folk Club over the last two decades she brought to Delaware folk performers from many countries, especially Ireland, Scotland and England. Since 1995 she was a board member of the Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music. Suzi was also active in the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance and was a Friend of the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Suzi worked as a Music Therapist for more than 30 years at the Terry Children's Psychiatric Center in New Castle and was devoted to her colleagues and to the children entrusted to her care. She delighted in connecting her personal and professional interests by bringing many Green Willow performers to meet and perform for the Terry Center children she loved to work with.

Suzi was predeceased by her parents and a brother, David Wollenberg. She is survived by her husband, John Lupton of Claymont, DE; a sister, Melissa Pusch and her husband Bob Hill of Boyds, MD; a brother, John Wollenberg and his wife Connie of Pensacola, FL; and her uncle, James Edwards Jr. of Manchester, NH Her passing is also mourned by friends and musical associates across the United States and in many countries.

A memorial service for Suzi will be held on Thursday, August 13, at 1 pm, at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE. The family will receive guests in the funeral home starting at 12 noon. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Green Willow Folk Club, PO Box 15053, Newark, DE 19711-5053; and WVUD, Perkins Student Ctr., Univ. of DE, Newark, DE 19716.

Oh, no - We met Suzi after playing at the Green Willow. Suzi loved folk music and gave her all. It's as if a light has gone out in this very dark world.

It is a little too close to home...as a 56 year old woman who has had a pulmonary embolism and who hosts a folk radio show and helps produce folk concerts and festivals, i am made more aware of how precious life is. So many have passed on recently...those of us who remain have to carry on the traditions..pick up the torch and carry on!!

Oh that's terrible. I have dear memories of staying with Suzi and her husband when we played at the Green Willow in Wilmington. This is a tragic loss to the folk community, not to be compared to the huge personal loss of those close to her. I am devastated.

I was just reading Mike Regenstreif's blog and he's written about the sudden passing of Suzi Wollenberg, a folk radio host from WVUD in Delaware, at the too young age of 56.

Mike's blog.
