Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Tyke Date: 03 Sep 09 - 07:06 PM I only managed to get to the Endeavour on the Last Night Mick only to find that some B*#~*rds had drunk all the beer leaving only John Smiths and Guinness. I had a Gig on the Sunday so I did not manage to get to Whitby until Tuesday. Not a bad thing to do, as I'm still not 100% health wise. I was in the Fleece on Tuesday Night till about Midnight then onto the Middle Earth till 3am. Did the same on the Wednesday teaming up with John Pencheon, of Colleens Fancy, in the Middle Earth. Thursday it was the now annual Fund Raising by The Whitby Folk Club for the RNLI in the Friendship Rowing Club. Then it was late night revealers in the Middle Earth till the early hours. By this time it was nearly all over bar the shouting on Friday Night but after meeting up with Tony and Angie in the Fleece for a quick pint it was time to pay the session at the Bottom House a visit. After that it was down to the Endeavour to meet up with Ken and Marie and yourself. I have to confess that after you all went home I ended up back at the Middle Earth for more fun and frolics. However there was one singer, who was given the best of order, would have been better off singing on the X-Factor. After listening to him I decided that a good sleep was in order and I headed for my bed, again, at around 3am. |

The locals have to put up with a lot during Folk Week and the Regatta followed by a Bank holiday Weekend. We can find a lot of resentment with the carry on with Sam Smiths. Lets not forget the Locals who can no longer spend their time sitting and watching the Horse Races over a pint after putting on their bets and the loss of the big screen-sporting event being shown. Whitby Folk Week official arranged plenty of opportunities for quiet singers and singer-rounds. The Whitby Fringe events are Fringe events if you want organized quiet why not go to Joe and Mo's or the Conservative Club or the Friendship Rowing Club. Personally I prefer the fringe I enjoy the challenge of getting the attention of the audience including the locals involving them and getting them to join in. The satisfaction I feel when someone makes a comment like "Well I don't like Folk Music but I really enjoyed that!" or "Oh I was just about to go but if you're here I think I'll stop a bit longer!" Whitby Folk Week is the Friendly Festival please extend your friendship to the Local Residents as well. That way I am sure you will have an even better Folk Week next year. PS The Fleece had at times three sessions, The Middle Earth at Times Three sessions and New to the fringe The Bottom House who's New Landlords put on Free Food to make the Folkies Welcome. Didn't get to check out The Dolphin, which also had sessions and hosts the regular Friday Night Session in Whitby. Oh and here's a first for me I did try to stick my head in the Station by I never managed to get more than my big toe inside it was so jammmed packed. |

At times on the two evenings that I could attend I had to virtually sing as loud as I could, for those like the ladies it was impossible to hear what they were singing which all is a great shame. I love singarounds especially at festivals as it brings out a diverse of songs from other than the area one lives in. I attended also two lunchtime sessions at the Rowing Club and there without any background noise it was just the opposite, a pleasure both to sing and to listen without straining both voice and ears. I appreciate The Endeavour is a pub but a door between the bar and lounge area, I'll call it, would be a blessing and I could see from the expressions on Mick's face that he wished the same also. Hope to see you next year. Mick, oh you forgot to mention David and Ower Han at the singarounds, not to worry, you did well in the circumstances. |

Very well done Mick lad, you did a really sterling job every night in the Endeavour. The place during the folk week wouldn't be the same without you. I thought they were the best sessions in the whole of Whitby for a really good, not too formal, not too stuffy, extremely friendly, very welcoming and inclusive singaround, (even to people like me who can be quite nervous about singing in public some times.) Long may you be in robust good health (and also with the same great 'stamina' that you need to do it night after night!) to continue doing what you do so well. Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: GUEST,Steve Date: 25 Aug 09 - 08:09 PM The Whitby Folk Week seems rather light on traditional sea-songs and shanty singers as far as can be seen - which isn't that far as the organisers refuse to release the programme of events and want to extort a £4 fee from people who may be just mildly interested to see who is on and whether it might be worth going to Whitby at all. Personally, that's the kind of attitude that makes me inclined to give the event a miss altogether, even though I like Whitby. However, I do like sea songs and East Yorkshire's premier singer-songwriter of this genre is going to be at several of the singarounds, having gone up from Hull on Tuesday. Jim Radford recently won the Scarborough SeaFest "Song for the Sea" competition (again) with his latest composition "The Merchant Seaman" (a tribute to the WWII merchant sailors - of which he was one) and it would be a shame to miss this as there are no recordings of this song available yet (Jim's earlier song, "The Shores of Normandy", was recorded by the late Rod Shearman and is also on a fundraising CD for the Normandy Veterans's Association). Maybe I'll toddle up to Whitby for the Friday evening sessions after all. |

The Station was really noisy over the weekend in the main bars; the Middle Earth I always find basically ok; The Fleece was quiet enough to sing in even though it was busy; the Endeavour always seems to be noisy. That's about as many as I tried over the weekend. Enjoyed the Bottmleys singaround in the station which was a nice mix even though you get a lot of sound from the other bar and it is pretty cramped. |

I've only ventured there about three times so far, but on each occasion I thoroughly enjoyed myself. If you can try to take some time out to visit it I think that you will be well pleased that you made the extra little effort. The singarounds in there are warm, cosy and intimate, with a good atmosphere, and you get a great welcome from the hosts and the locals. They are really into folk songs and folkies. It is yet another venue in Whitby that will titilate you and give you a warm glow in your heart and provides yet another option to experience a different kind of singaround experience. I also recall them serving some extremely good hand-pulled real ales. Even better! It's a bit off the beaten track, behind the railway station and up a hill into a residential area of terraced housing. I can find my way to it but find that I can't describe it adequately to you here. It's only about a 10-15 minute stroll from the Station so it's not that far to venture out, but at this point I will ask someone more local who knows the area to give you full and clear directions. So, Commander Crabbe, Raggytash, Stewart or Chris, can you help out here please with directions? Singaround sessions during Whitby Folk Week are held there every night (apart from the first Friday night) from 7.00/7.30pm'ish and go on till late. Hope to see you there and hope you enjoy it. This seems to be the policy of the RNLI and it makes sense to make sure that monies for New Boats and equipment go where they are most needed. The Whitby Folk Club have in the past few years made a collection during the Club Night in Folk Week for the RNLI. With Graham and Jim and Coblers Monday and many more in attendance at the friendship. It's also worth mentioning that if the weather is right for session outside the Friendship has a great Beer Garden as well as the downstairs bar with views of the Harbour. |

And the maritime links on other days can be quite tenuous. The other significant point about them is that the collections are for the Whitby lifeboat, rather than for the festival, with the agreement of the festival organisers. Kitty |

You have to go to the folkweek website which will tell you how to by a programme in advance. This will of coarse involve spending a little money. But even the tightest tyke can't free-load forever. I bought mine at Saltburn (damned good do by the way) There is one omission it neglets to say there is a last lap of the Marathon Singaround on the last Friday the 28th, but there will be one. Mo and I will be there although we may have the staggers by then. Joe N. |

So if yer want to sing and lead other than shanties (with JIm and Graeme), look for prog ones like Joe and Mo's Looks like we need Jude Knight and Station people to clarify what we are likely to be doing during day time? Barnsley musos like Dave and Zoe Bottomley and John Platt and Sarah plan there usual session every pm in the "non smoking room" in the Station and no doubt wall to wall music in the big room Evening will doubtless be Station usual singing room Bring back the Plough!!!! The very first broadside is at eigh-o-clock so come early because we get full. Eveyone is welcome Singers, musicians, Poets, Pheasants (plucked and cooked) Children (with Mum and or Dad). Anything goes it does not have to be folk, we had some trad -jazz last year. It's free but there is a collection (poor childrens fathers beer fund I think) We go round the room in an anti clockwise direction (because time is our only enemy.
