Subject: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Joe Nicholson Date: 11 Aug 09 - 05:59 PM Any one looking for a Singaround in Whitby Folk Week could well try scaling the hieghts of the west cliff to the Rifle Club where mo and I have been landed since Sam Smith got shot of us from The Plough. The very first broadside is at eigh-o-clock so come early because we get full. Eveyone is welcome Singers, musicians, Poets, Pheasants (plucked and cooked) Children (with Mum and or Dad). Anything goes it does not have to be folk, we had some trad -jazz last year. It's free but there is a collection (poor childrens fathers beer fund I think) We go round the room in an anti clockwise direction (because time is our only enemy. So don't forget after all that one Man's long itroduction is another Man's song Joe Nicholson |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Joe Nicholson Date: 11 Aug 09 - 07:37 PM It's just the LONG introductions that can be a problem particularly late in the evenening when we are trying our best to get eveyone on Joe N |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Joe Nicholson Date: 13 Aug 09 - 06:12 AM Is a long introduction in sin-a-round another Mans sin? You would never get away with a sin-a-round in the Rifle Cub it is a respectable place and anyway we have invited the children You could try it in The Plough as long as theres no music involved joe N |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: GUEST,padgett on lap top Date: 13 Aug 09 - 01:19 PM I am sure Joe and Mo will permit me to say that there should also be plenty of activity in pubs like The Station and other "official" venues like the Conservative club It will be busy as it is Reggatta week too! and beer prices may be higher than last year! Plenty of activities such as usual morris and music sessionsand workshops will add to the overall feel!! May even be a Catters meet, hope so Ray Padgett |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 13 Aug 09 - 01:32 PM Sounds good to me, Joe, and perhaps this should be a singaround standard - "We go round the room in an anti clockwise direction, because time is our only enemy"! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: ossonflags Date: 14 Aug 09 - 04:37 AM Not forgetting "The Mick Mcgarry and Friends session" in The Endeavour every day: 4.00pm to 8.00pm every day starting Monday to Friday;free and all welcome |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Raggytash Date: 14 Aug 09 - 05:11 AM Michael I think you will find that the organisers have scheduled events in the Endeavour for part of the hours you have stated, haven't got the programme in front of me but I think there's a festival event starting at 3pm each day, not 100% will check |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: ossonflags Date: 14 Aug 09 - 06:49 AM Thanks Nick, I will now check with Barry |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Willa Date: 14 Aug 09 - 01:48 PM Hi Mick The programme advertises singarounds 5pm to 7pm in the Endeavour, with Sat The Wilsons Sun Pete Wood Mon The Wilsons Tues Notts Alliance Wed Chris Miles, Gordon Hoyland Fri Pete Morton The 'Endeavour' full page ad has you running the singarounds 4pm daily!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Mrs.Duck Date: 14 Aug 09 - 02:38 PM Sooooo lots of singing in the Endeavour. Can't fault it! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: MoorleyMan Date: 15 Aug 09 - 02:44 PM Helpful info! So, to complete the jigsaw, can anyone with access to a programme tell us whether and where there will be any singarounds (official or otherwise) between noon and the start of Mick's Endeavour one at 4 ? Folks'll need to get their voices warmed up for then! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Willa Date: 16 Aug 09 - 08:22 AM From the programme 1-3pm each day Sat The Endeavour Jim Mageean, Pete Wood Sun to Friday Friendship Rowing Club Cobblers Monday Don't know when the singarounds in the Station will be. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: GUEST,jj Date: 16 Aug 09 - 09:13 AM Station singarounds are usually all day every day! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: MoorleyMan Date: 16 Aug 09 - 12:46 PM Thanks Willa - one more thing - are the maritime/shanty sings with Jim Mageean & pals still going too? They used to be in the Endeavour 12-2 each weekday, once upon a time.. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: ossonflags Date: 16 Aug 09 - 03:39 PM Update on my session: I will be running the Endeavour session Friday to Friday from: 19.00hrs to 23.00 hours each day. Hope to see you all there? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Willa Date: 16 Aug 09 - 04:29 PM Hi MoorleyMan According to the programme, 'Haul Away' AKA 'Maritime Mixture' with Jim is in the Endeavour Sunday to Friday, 1pm to 3pm. (my copy is getting dog-eared already!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: MoorleyMan Date: 16 Aug 09 - 06:08 PM Thanks Willa, that's really helpful. (O if only the organisers would put programme info on the website so we might be able to make an informed decision on when best to come...) If your dog has ears, then I'll see ye on dog-watch ... |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: ossonflags Date: 17 Aug 09 - 02:35 PM Just me then? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Les from Hull Date: 17 Aug 09 - 02:49 PM Might pop in for a small sherry and a long boring ballad! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: ossonflags Date: 18 Aug 09 - 03:07 AM yerldoforme!!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: GUEST,padgett on lap top Date: 18 Aug 09 - 03:41 AM Well I do think that following on from Morley Man and ossonflags comments it is important to distinguish what a singaround will actually be ossonflags one will be a proper singaround (hope it isnt too noisy) Mageeans and Graeme Knights? will be a shanty sings session which is not a singaround like Mr McGarrys (ossonflags) Where guests are there expect them to do the singing unless otherwise informed! So if yer want to sing and lead other than shanties (with JIm and Graeme), look for prog ones like Joe and Mo's Looks like we need Jude Knight and Station people to clarify what we are likely to be doing during day time? Barnsley musos like Dave and Zoe Bottomley and John Platt and Sarah plan there usual session every pm in the "non smoking room" in the Station and no doubt wall to wall music in the big room Evening will doubtless be Station usual singing room Bring back the Plough!!!! Ray Padgett |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Joe Nicholson Date: 18 Aug 09 - 08:29 AM The info about whats on at Whitby can be found on the internet. You have to go to the folkweek website which will tell you how to by a programme in advance. This will of coarse involve spending a little money. But even the tightest tyke can't free-load forever. I bought mine at Saltburn (damned good do by the way) There is one omission it neglets to say there is a last lap of the Marathon Singaround on the last Friday the 28th, but there will be one. Mo and I will be there although we may have the staggers by then. Joe N. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: MoorleyMan Date: 18 Aug 09 - 09:21 AM Good to hear from you, Ray Padgett On Lap Top (did you have to call the AA out to get the computer started ?!!! LOL! ).... You valiantly tried to >>distinguish what a singaround will actually be<< - good effort, but I think some folks will now be even more confused! Accepting that Mo & Joe's various slots and the Ossonflags evening sessions will all be run as >>a proper singaround<<, and that Jude & Jim's Station ones will be going as usual. And that the shanty sings will go round the room and allow non-guests to lead one per session. Clear so far! That leaves your other comment: >>Where guests are there expect them to do the singing unless otherwise informed!<< which rather implies that all the other times mentioned above and listed in the programme as singarounds are not actually what we call "proper singarounds" but thinly disguised guest performances? - ie 1-3pm each day Sun to Friday, Friendship Rowing Club (Coblers Monday) and each day 5pm to 7pm in the Endeavour, with Sat The Wilsons, Sun Pete Wood, Mon The Wilsons, Tues Notts Alliance, Wed Chris Miles, Thurs Gordon Hoyland, Fri Pete Morton ? Did I read that right? In which case, there is no "programmed" proper singaround any day before 7 pm and the only potential singing outlet for the wandering singer during those times would be in the little room at the Station? Shurely shome mishtake? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: GUEST,padgett on lap top Date: 18 Aug 09 - 12:04 PM This is precisely the information needed David for people to decide whether they are likely to be needed in singaround or stand a chance of singing As I said the format may well change or be different depending upon the booked MCs guests and what they have planned or expect! and the nature of the guest artists RE Friendship with Mick Haywood and Coblers Monday, again usual to go around the room with normal input from Coblers RE other imprompt sings and the Station who knows? Ray Padgett battery working on lap top recharged from mains!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Linda Kelly Date: 18 Aug 09 - 01:50 PM Can I just ask -whose lap are you on top of Padge? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Joe Nicholson Date: 18 Aug 09 - 06:24 PM could be the gods oh no sorry thats in isn't it |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Folkiedave Date: 18 Aug 09 - 06:26 PM No matter whose lap - they will talk about the first thing that comes up..... |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Herga Kitty Date: 18 Aug 09 - 06:30 PM Ray - Jim and Graeme's lunchtime sessions in the Endeavour will all have a maritime theme (including songs based in, on or close to oceans, seas, rivers and canals), but shanties aren't compulsory except on Wednesdays. And the maritime links on other days can be quite tenuous. The other significant point about them is that the collections are for the Whitby lifeboat, rather than for the festival, with the agreement of the festival organisers. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Tyke Date: 18 Aug 09 - 10:54 PM I think it will be, as usual for the RNLI, rather than the monies being able to be donated to just The Whitby Life Boats. This seems to be the policy of the RNLI and it makes sense to make sure that monies for New Boats and equipment go where they are most needed. The Whitby Folk Club have in the past few years made a collection during the Club Night in Folk Week for the RNLI. With Graham and Jim and Coblers Monday and many more in attendance at the friendship. It's also worth mentioning that if the weather is right for session outside the Friendship has a great Beer Garden as well as the downstairs bar with views of the Harbour. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: GUEST,padgett on YGs Lap top Date: 19 Aug 09 - 03:13 AM Well we do have a plethora of information do we not! The lap top is dead easy to get internet contact instead of having to crank up the handle on my old pc and get and remember all the secret passwords and security devices it seems to find There is a treasury on its old hard drive of Yorkshire songs and audio recording (yes I have backed up what I need, thanks) Spoke to Jude yesterday and the Station singarounds officially down for after Jim and Graemes, Maritime (thanks Kitty) session We have plenty of sing around MCs (talk to Jude); I will no doubt be one in the afternoon sessions Ray Padgett |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 19 Aug 09 - 04:29 AM Will be theere on Friday along with Mr Johnson let the good times begin. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week Singarounds From: Raggytash Date: 19 Aug 09 - 05:39 AM Don't forget there will also be a session each night at the First In Last Out. there is a new lanlord and landlady in place who are doing to stalwart job to date of looking after the folkies who gather there each Tuesday and the first Saturday of each month. The session ably fronted by Stu and Chris (I've got to say that they're both bigger then me) will no doubt be fantastic. |
