Subject: Welcome to Session/sing on way to Whitby
From: Nick
Date: 13 Aug 09 - 08:26 PM

Over the last few years we have had a few people pop into our weekly session/singaround on the Wednesday before Whitby so I thought I'd just mention that we still meet every week and anyone who is in our part of the world a few days before the beginning of Whitby would be very welcome to pop in for a sing or a play.

We are at the Thompsons Arms Flaxton just off the A64 about 10 miles north of York. There is some idea of what we are about HERE.

The pub has some accommodation and a reasonable size carpark so people don't have to necessarily rush away. The pub has a website
HERE which gives some more info. Stuart who runs it I'm sure would furnish more information if anyone is interested.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone is early and at a loose end

That's an excellent idea; thanks for letting us know.

Unfortunately this session is a bit early for me as we'll be travelling from Sussex on the Friday and looking for something on Friday evening. Does anyone know of anything happening about 50 miles from Whitby on the Friday night?

Many thanks,

Valmai

Hiya Dr Nick.
Flaxton is a a great night out.
Friendly.welcoming, inclusive and they provide an excellent mix of music if you were just going along for a listen.
There is a piano to play in the room.
Lovely bunch of people there recommend you drop in.

Nick, your site is wrong to claim that "Niel Gow's second wife" (the subject of his lament) was his fiddle. Check his biography (there are several one web) or the editorial note in the original published score. I don't know where you got that from, but maybe you could put your source straight to stop the misinformation being spread any further?

Thanks Jack - I have amended it

I was told by the fiddler who first played it to me and that's a few years ago. It seems to be a quite widely perpetuated myth though - jings, there's even a Scotsman on the session who commented on the tune with this story back in 2003.

Probably no-one will ever come and visit Flaxton ever again now that I have been discredited and I will die a long lingering death alone in my garrett. O me miserum.

Subject: Whitby 'Eve', what's on?
From: GUEST,Mo

We usually travel to Whitby on the Friday to be there bright and early and not miss any of the festival. I haven't yet booked B&B for that night (we have a flat for the week), and I suspect it might be difficult in Whitby itself - with the Regatta and all.
Are there any good sessions or sings planned in or near Whitby on Friday evening. E.g. if there was something on in Robin Hood's Bay we could try for accomodation there.

Valmai, great minds think alike. I just started a new thread asking that. Maybe they should be combined by some moderator?

Friday night is usually folk club night at the Dolphin in RH Bay. I'm only there v.occasionally so can't confirm for that night in particular, but if it is on I think it is one you would enjoy.

We're staying over in Bay this year, for various reasons. I think it's practical if we park in the field behind the Abbey. So let's see how it goes!

Don't forget lads and lasses - Wednesday Thompson's and Friday the Tap.

But the pub car park at Flaxton's not all that big, so be prepared to park (ever so carefully) on the road outside. It's a good do.

The Abbey Car Park is a bit unsafe for over night parking I would not risk my Car up behind the Abbey! Keep safe, yes, I know it's Whitby but better safe than sorry!
