Subject: RE: BS: There are a lot of threads on here From: Jack Campin Date: 14 Aug 09 - 06:18 PM I had to look that up: http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html 409 Conflict The request could not be completed due to a conflict with the current state of the resource. This code is only allowed in situations where it is expected that the user might be able to resolve the conflict and resubmit the request. The response body SHOULD include enough information for the user to recognize the source of the conflict. Ideally, the response entity would include enough information for the user or user agent to fix the problem; however, that might not be possible and is not required. Conflicts are most likely to occur in response to a PUT request. For example, if versioning were being used and the entity being PUT included changes to a resource which conflict with those made by an earlier (third-party) request, the server might use the 409 response to indicate that it can't complete the request. In this case, the response entity would likely contain a list of the differences between the two versions in a format defined by the response Content-Type. |

Subject: RE: BS: There are a lot of threads on here From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Aug 09 - 07:45 PM The Chevy 409 was an elegant piece of engineering which led to the very successful "Rat" motors of the late '60's muscle cars. The sound of a solid lifter Rat is one of those unlike any other. Chevy found themselves with two good small blocks (the 283-327 series) and the 348. The 348 had room to grow however and the guys at Chevy worked it over into the 409. The damn thing weighed just a few pounds more than Chevy's in-line 6 and in its most common build, produced about 400 HP. Running two big Carter Quads it cranked out 425 HP and would pass damn near anything but a gas station. BTW......I bet that whoever it was that thought Buick used it was thinking of the 403, an Olds engine Buick shared for a few years. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: There are a lot of threads on here From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Aug 09 - 03:14 PM I don't know why Buick engines were different from those of other GM products. According to this Wikipedia article, the biggest Buick V8 was a 455. But the cars that had 455-cubic-inch engines were such big boats, that they couldn't go very fast. Pontiac also had a 455. Oldsmobile had a Rocket 455, but probably its most famous engine was the Rocket 4-4-0 (which was actually 400 cubic inches). The Rocket 88 and Rocket 98 numbers had nothing to do with engine displacement. At 572 cubic inches, it looks like Chevy had the biggest engine, but I gather that this engine was used in trucks. Looks to me like the Cadillac 500 was the biggest GM passenger car engine. The 428 was the biggest gasoline-powered Ford engine I found. The Chrysler 426 Hemi was a famous engine. And hey, I once was issued a high-powered car as my government vehicle - an American Motors Matador with a 401 V8. It sure was an ugly car, but it had great acceleration. As far as I can tell, the largest production passenger car engine is the Dodge Viper V10, 510 cubic inches. This page says GM built a 572-cubic-inch crate engine (you had to install it yourself...). |

Subject: RE: BS: There are a lot of threads on here From: Alice Date: 15 Aug 09 - 08:05 PM In 1978, I went on a road trip in a 1949 straight eight Buick Super Dynaflow (Blue). From Montana down to Mexico, along the west coast of Mexico and then into Mexico City, down through Oaxaca, the Isthmus, Guatemala, and then El Salvador. That took one month. Then I lived on the coast of El Salvador for two months in an area called Sihuapilapa. Returning through Guatemala to Tikal, then Belize, around the Yucatan to Merida and Chichen Itaza, to Palenque and Veracruz, the east coasts, back across to Mexico City, and to the west coast again, up through Nogales and north to Montana. That's my Buick story. This isn't the same car, but this is a '49 Buick Super Dynaflow. |
