I had a New Lost City Ramblers Album back in the 60's with a song with lyrics something like:

Just because you're in deep elem,
Don't think you can deep elem me.
You know I knew you when
You had dollar one to spend.
So don't try to deep elem me.

Does anyone know the rest of the lyrics?

Hi Q-

This is not the one in the DT. I think it was also recorded by Elton Brit. I don't remember the name of the NLC Ramblers album, but it also had "Never Bob Your Hair Girls" on it. I hope that helps...

A version of it was also recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis back in the glory days of Rock'n'Roll and was reissued in the 70s on ,I think, the Charly label.

I remembered another verse. Maybe it will jog someone's memory?

any help appreciated,

Thanks - Kevin

Just because you're in deep elem,
Don't think you 're too wise for me.
You were shining shoes I know.
When I was rolling in the dough.
So don't try to deep elem me.

The song was done by the Shelton Brothers in 1939 but was popularized by Elton Britt who had a country hit with it.

Don't have the lyrics tho.

The name of the song is:

"Just Because You're In Deep Elem"

It's not Deep Elem blues, or other Deep Elem songs

I've found some verses by Elton Britt, some from Slim Dusty and some from my Dusty Memory. This may not be the complete song but it will do for now.

Just Beacause You're in Deep Elem

Just because you're in deep elem,
Don't think you're to wise for me.
You know I knew you when
You just had dollar one to spend.
So don't try and deep elem me.

Just because you're in deep elem,
Don't think you're too wise for me.
You were shining shoes I know.
When I was rolling in the dough.
So don't try to deep elem me.

Just because you're in deep elem,
Don't think you're too wise for me.
I remember when
you were eating now and then
So don't try and deep elem me.

Just because you're in deep elem,
Don't think you're too wise for me.
Don't forget there was a time
I could buy you for a dime.
So don't try and deep elem me.

Hi, I sing this song alot, learnt it from a friend...not sure if she learnt it from recordings or just of another musician..

If you go down to deep elm
put you money in your shoes
for those women down deep elm
got those deep elm blues

oh deep elm pappas got those deep elm blues (x2)

If you go down to deep elm
put your money in your socks
for those womne down deep elm
they will throw you on the rocks

oh deep elm, pappas got those deep elm blues (x2)

If you go down to deep elm
put your money in your had
for those women down deep elm
they will throw you on the flat

Oh deep elm, pappas got those deep elm blues (x2)

If you go down to deep elm
just to have a little fun
get your fifteen dollars ready
before the police man comes

Oh deep elm pappas got those deep elm blues (x2)

Once I knew a preacher
read the bible through and through
Went down to deep elm
now his preaching days are through

oh deep elm, pappas got those deep elm blues (x2)

That last is the Deep Elem Blues version that I learned many years ago from Tom Paley. Another verse was: "She says we have to marry And her Daddy says the same - I would make a run for Frisco But her Daddy has dead aim - Oh sweet mamma..."

If you get a chance..listen to Steve Abbott of Colorado
do Deep Elem Blues..w/ his mandoline..it can't be beat..
but Elton Britt's ..Don't try to Deep Elem me is a horse
of a different color - a gem too..but not the same song
a all.

My Dad taught me this song about sixty years ago. I've wanted to know what the other verses might be. Here's the one I remember.

Just because you're in Deep Elem,
Don't you think you're too wise for me.
When you had no socks to wear, I had on a dollar pair.
Don't you think you're too wise for me.

Deep Elem was the colored red light district in Dallas, now somewhat gentrified with arts-craft stuff, entertainment, etc.

As a country song, 'tis a puzzlement.

JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE IN DEEP ELEM
As sung by Elton Britt

[yodel]

1. Just because you're in Deep Elem,
Don't you think you're too wise for me.

Buddy, I remember when
You were eatin' now and then,
So don't try to Deep Elem me.

[Lines 1, 2, & 5 are the same in every verse. Lines 3-4 vary as follows:]

2. Don't forget there was a time
I could buy you for a dime.

3. You were shining shoes I know
When I was up in the dough.

4. When your rent was overdue,
I squared up the bill for you.

5. When they put you in the jail,
I'm the guy put up the bail.

6. I'll admit your clothes are fine,
But they used to look like mine.

7. When you had no socks to wear,
I had on a dollar pair.

8. When you had no place to sleep,
I dug down, and I dug down deep.
