Entries now open for the best use of a traditional song for one's own nefarious purposes. I like this use of Carrickfergus:

and the use of The Last Rose of Summer in the Thai film Tears of the Black Tiger - can't find a clip online that uses it, but the film is well worth watching for its lurid Technicolor - very lovely - and its cheesy plotting.

The slide show there for that Gallic rewrite of Carrickfetgus doesn't help much - but I like the way Joe Dassin sings it, it's not at all a bad set of lyrics:

Here's a Joe Dassin website with words of songs written or recorded by him. Died in 1980 it appears - I'd never heard of him, but he seems worth knowing about - born in New York the same year as me, and transplanted to France, thanks to McCarthyism, at the age of 12...
