Subject: RE: Tech: fake links on mudcat From: Bernard Date: 21 Aug 09 - 05:46 AM You'll need to download and run ComboFix - or get someone with experience to do it for you. It's a trojan infection which can turn nasty - and has possibly infected any pen drives or network drives you may have by adding an autorun.inf which points to malicious code. This way the trojan doesn't even need the internet to propagte itself. ComboFix download and instructions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix - in case you can't click through the link, copy and paste). You'd be well advised to download everything on someone else's machine, and put it on a clean pen drive. Make sure you aren't connected to either the internet or your network (if you have one), then follow the instructions. Don't even allow ComboFix to download any updates once running, because the trojans are now savvy to ComboFix and can hijack its attempts to update. One machine I cleaned recently had a trojan that recognised the filename combofix.exe and blocked it from running... I changed it to fred.exe and away it went! |

Subject: RE: Tech: fake links on mudcat From: Joe Offer Date: 20 Aug 09 - 04:17 PM Hi, Donuel - I think what you're seeking are indeed fake links from an outside source that are superimposed on pages that you're viewing. Do a scan of your computer with an up-to-date antivirus package, and you may find what's causing it. Most likely, the cause is your computer interacting with an outside source, and not Mudcat. If you're seeing similar links on other sites, then it's most probable that they're coming from an outside source. We carry Google and Amazon ads, nothing else. They help significantly to pay for the support of Mudcat. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Tech: fake links on mudcat From: Emma B Date: 20 Aug 09 - 04:07 PM There is a rather nasty adware going the rounds - went shopping today for software to try to eradicate it to no effect met a couple of other customers in the store with the same problem. |
Subject: RE: Tech: fake links on mudcat From: Jeri Date: 20 Aug 09 - 04:03 PM Don, I'm not seeing any. If you're getting fake ads, you probably have some types of adware on your machine. |
Subject: Tech: fake links on mudcat From: Donuel Date: 20 Aug 09 - 03:59 PM The fake links in my posts are obviously a spam/adware bug, but on whose end? |
