I have just booked a trip as cheaply as possible. Others might want to join me. Sands Hotel has a special midweek for $25/night if you hit the right website..$34/night and fourth night free. Not the top of the line casino hotel but not bad either.

I probably don't want to share that room but I have rooms on the 6th and the 11th at a SUper8 facility near airport that I would share with a female. Book soon if you are interested because there are some expensive rates because of balloon fest weekend of 11th..which doesn't that sound like fun? I am excited to see a bit of it.

Joe said in another thread he might make it for a hike nearby. If someone is local and could lead a trip to a ghost town or something that would be great.

This is mostly going to be a boot camp for me to try to shake off some weight at all you can eat buffets. I am not sure I will lose weight but I know if I stick to my plan I won't gain any. That is neither here nor there.

Lots to do around Reno I have heard. Western Folklore center. Cowboy poets now and then. Perhaps I can make it to a genealogy center run by LDS.

Mary...i just composed a newsy message then accidentally erased it
by clicking on a link to search ..

i will try to re-create it here..

your best "bet" (it IS a gambling town)
to find out what's on is the free paper news and review
http://www.newsreview.com/reno/home

the Reno cowboy music and poetry fest is THIS
weekend..aug 21-22

and there is another similar event on a much smaller scale
at the Vinton Grange, sept. 26 this is in calif. but close to
reno..there is a bus load of folks who come from reno--rotary club

and a cowboy barbeque and dance (where i will be playing )
in Blairsden on Sept 5 just before you arrive, darn it..
again in calif.

the Bonanza Ranch is in the area..and there is a talk
about it at the library..but it is in incline village..
in tahoe. The Ponderosa ranch closed to the public in 2004.
but there is a dvd of it..

there is also a friends of the library book sale
on sat. sept 12 ttp://www.washoecounty.us/library

I do not think you will find Reno a very folk-friendly town,
but there is a contra dance on sep 12 (if you are still there)
http://www.sierracontra.org/

and these folks hold dances and concerts in carson city just
south of reno http://funfamilydance.wordpress.com/

and you might find these performers in the area
http://www.gigmasters.com/Search/FolkDuo-Reno-NV.html

there is lots of entertainment avaialable at casinos..
i did see Gordon Lightfoot there once, but mostly you
will find top - 40 (or worse) good luck!

what time do you get in on the 6th..i will be about 50
miles away....and will be possibly able to swing by reno
if early enough in the day...

You're traveling to a shithole like Reno to lose weight by going to all-you-can-eat buffets?

No offense, but I think you should have your meds adjusted.

Cheers,
Michael

Yes. Actually I am. I expect I will do very well not having to buy, tote food by food for over a mile, cook food and have it right there when I need it. I expect to find it much easier to have 100% compliance with my diet and certainly will not gain weight and probably will lose a couple of pounds at least, plus hopefully get in more exercise besides the walking that I am pretty good at. Thanks for the input. Buffets do not frighten me. mg

If we had a place to do a lot of jamming and song circles, I'd probably try to make it.   The price seems good.
I'm not that interested in taking the time out for watching shows or hiking, though. I can do that in Portland any time, without having to fly or pay for hotel rooms.   But participatory music, that's a whole 'nuther kettle of banjos. ; D

Thanks for sending the info, Mary.

Thanks. That would be fun. I am not expecting people to really show up but if they did, that would be great.

I arrive in Reno 4:45 p.m. on the 6th. I stay that night and te 11th at the Super8 Meadow Wood Courtyard 3 miles from airport. I probably will head straight there from the airport...might even walk if not too hot or dangerous etc.

I leave 10:20 a.m. on the 12th and get back to Portland.

Might spend Sat the 5th in Portland and would be up for any adventures there. mg

just checking to see if you are there, mary, p.m me for more..
sorry i was not able to make it there..i had a gig on sat. nite
at a barn dance at the intersection of hiway 70 and hiway 89 near
Blairsden.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Blairsden-graeagle&state=CA&address=Little+Bear+Rd+And+Ca-89&zipcode=96103

i was not in a position to add another 100 miles or another day
to my trip...and transport for you to get to blairsden from reno
is iffy, too.

then i had to head home to water the garden as i had been away
the day before as well, at another gig to play nyckelharpa for
a bunch of Swedes in Sacramento.

do you have computer access?
here is a thread about sessions in Reno..
http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=64185#1047881

let us know how you are doing...or if .....
